Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

On Android, Google Photos says saving an edit creates a copy. Separately, the app’s backup-quality setting can resize videos stored in your Google Account, so a lower-resolution cloud copy does not by itself prove the edit caused the change.
What happens when you save an edit?
Google Photos’ Android instructions say to tap Save “to save a copy of the video with your edits.” That describes a copy-saving workflow rather than an instruction to overwrite the original. The help page does not specify the edited copy’s export resolution, bitrate, codec, or a guarantee that its visual quality will match the source exactly. The available documentation therefore supports neither a blanket promise of lossless editing nor a claim that every edit reduces quality.

The instructions cited here are for Android. Google’s editor features and availability differ by device and platform, so do not assume that every tool or workflow is identical on iOS or across Android phones.
Editing and backup quality are separate
A change you notice can come from the edited copy, the version backed up to Google Photos, or the conditions under which a video is previewed or played. Google’s quality guidance specifies what its backup settings can do to resolution; it does not establish how every edit is encoded or how playback may adapt to a device or network.

Google describes these backup options:
| Backup setting | What Google says about video | Storage or availability |
|---|---|---|
| Original quality | Stores videos at the resolution captured, with no change to their quality. | Counts toward Google Account storage. Google recommends it for videos above 1080p. |
| Storage saver | Videos higher than 1080p are resized to 1080p. Videos at 1080p or lower should look close to the original; Google says some information, such as closed captions, might be lost. | Google describes photos and videos as stored at slightly reduced quality. |
| Express | Videos above 480p are resized to 480p. Videos at 480p or lower should look close to the original. | Available only in some countries or regions. |
These descriptions concern backup storage, not a universal specification for the edited file saved by the editor. In particular, Google’s statement that Original quality preserves captured resolution is about that backup setting—not a guarantee about every edited export.
How to check whether the saved video changed
- Keep the source file available. If preserving an untouched original matters, retain a separate copy before editing.
- Compare the local files. Check the original and the saved edited copy’s dimensions and file size. A difference can help identify a change, but file size alone does not establish visual quality.
- Check the backed-up item’s details. In Google Photos, open the video’s information or details and look for its backup quality and size. Google directs users to item details for this information.
- Separate the causes. If the local edited copy and cloud-backed-up version differ, consider the backup setting before attributing the difference to editing. If only the edited copy differs from the local source, the available Google help does not identify the exact export behavior responsible.
Which editing features and devices are covered?
Google’s Android help describes tools including trimming, stabilization, crop and rotation, visual adjustments, filters and effects, text, speed, and audio options. It lists Android 8.0 or later and at least 3 GB of RAM for video adjustment and filter/effect features. The page identifies audio erasure for Pixel 8 and newer, and a mute option for non-Pixel devices. These are Android-specific requirements and feature notes, not a universal list for every platform.

Availability may have changed since that announcement. Google’s 2021 editor announcement is historical context, not evidence that every listed feature remains available on every current device.
