Does Edge Use V8 Engine? How Microsoft Edge’s JavaScript Engine Works

Microsoft Edge runs the V8 JavaScript engine and is based on the Chromium open-source project. Here is how those two pieces differ and what the JIT setting changes.

Yes. Microsoft Edge runs the V8 JavaScript engine. Microsoft’s own Edge policy documentation names V8 directly, and Edge is built on the Chromium open-source browser project. Those two facts answer the question, but they describe different layers of the browser, and mixing them up is where most confusion starts.

What V8 does inside Edge

V8 is the JavaScript engine that parses, compiles, and runs the JavaScript on the pages you visit. Microsoft’s Edge policy reference describes the relevant setting as one that controls whether Microsoft Edge runs the V8 JavaScript engine with its just-in-time (JIT) compiler enabled. In other words, Microsoft itself identifies V8 as the engine Edge runs. Microsoft Edge policy documentation for DefaultJavaScriptJitSetting (last updated May 21, 2026) is the primary source for that statement.

Chromium and V8 answer different parts of the question

People searching this topic often treat “Chromium” and “V8” as alternatives. They are not. Chromium is the open-source browser project that Edge is based on. V8 is one of the components that project contains. The table below separates the two so each term has a single job.

Term What it is Relationship to Edge
Chromium Open-source browser project Edge is based on Chromium; Microsoft says it keeps control over Edge and can defer or reject Chromium changes
V8 JavaScript engine Named by Microsoft as the engine Edge runs
Edge Microsoft’s browser product Built on Chromium and runs V8 for JavaScript
Chrome Google’s browser product Also built on Chromium; Microsoft’s documentation does not establish that Chrome and Edge behave identically in every respect

The Chromium relationship is documented in Microsoft’s list of site compatibility-impacting changes coming to Microsoft Edge, which describes Edge’s Chromium ancestry and the company’s control over which changes it takes.

Why shared Chromium foundations do not make Edge identical to Chrome

Because Edge and Chrome share a Chromium base, many web-platform behaviors match. Microsoft is explicit that this is not a guarantee of sameness. The company says Edge adopts nearly all Chromium web-platform changes, not all of them, and it publishes notices about the high-impact differences it tracks. Developers get the same warning in Microsoft’s overview of Microsoft Edge extensions, which says that API parity with other Chromium browsers is not universal and that some less-common APIs can be specific to Edge.

Read the shared-engine answer narrowly. It tells you what JavaScript runtime Edge uses. It does not tell you that Edge matches Chrome on performance, security settings, update timing, or extension compatibility.

The JIT setting: a configuration option, not a different engine

JIT (just-in-time compilation) is the part of V8 that turns JavaScript into machine code while a page runs. Edge exposes a policy that governs it, and this is the most common source of confusion, because changing the setting can look like changing the engine. It does not.

  • Default behavior: If the policy is not configured, JavaScript JIT is enabled.
  • Scope: Administrators can apply the policy to specific URL patterns, so the setting can differ by site.
  • Cost of disabling JIT: Microsoft says disabling it may slow web rendering.
  • Feature impact: Disabling JIT may also disable parts of JavaScript, including WebAssembly.
  • Possible benefit: Microsoft says the change may allow a more secure configuration.

The policy page also lists the platforms and versions it applies to. Check that list before assuming the same control exists on every platform or build; the documentation does not establish identical controls everywhere.

A related note: WebView2

Microsoft’s introduction to WebView2 describes a control that lets native applications display web content, and states that it uses Microsoft Edge as its rendering engine. That is a statement about rendering. The WebView2 overview does not separately name V8 in its description, so it should not be cited as evidence for which JavaScript engine WebView2 uses.

Official wording

The policy reference describes the setting this way: “Allows you to set whether Microsoft Edge runs the v8 JavaScript engine with JIT (Just In Time) compiler enabled or not.” That wording is the clearest single statement of the engine question in Microsoft’s own documentation.

Summary of what the sources establish

Edge runs V8 for JavaScript, and Edge is built on Chromium. Shared foundations explain many similar behaviors, but Microsoft controls which Chromium changes Edge takes, and its extension guidance warns that APIs can differ. The JIT policy changes how V8 compiles code in Edge; it does not replace the engine.
