Why the PS5 Atmos setting is not the A50 headphone setting
Sony’s Dolby Atmos instructions direct players to Settings > Sound > Audio Output > Audio Format (Priority) > Dolby Atmos for a compatible HDMI-connected audio device. Sony describes Tempest 3D AudioTech rendering to the Dolby Atmos device in use, including overhead channels; Dolby also frames PS5 Atmos support around HDMI devices. For headphones, Sony provides a separate spatial-audio option: 3D Audio. Its headphone setup allows you to create a personalized profile by listening to sounds from different positions and angles, or select a preset. Sony’s PS5 3D Audio setup guide
How to enable PS5 3D Audio for headphones
- On the PS5, open Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones).
- Choose a preset or follow the prompts to create a personalized 3D audio profile.
- Use the A50’s normal PS5 connection for your generation. If the menu wording differs after a system update, follow the current console interface.
Sony’s PS5 FAQ says headset 3D Audio can be used with a PS5-compatible headset connected by USB or an analog headset plugged into the DualSense controller’s 3.5 mm jack. That FAQ dates to 2020, before Sony added the later system Dolby Atmos option, so it is useful here for the headphone connection distinction—not as a complete list of current PS5 audio formats. What the A50 HDMI Adapter does—and when it matters
The ASTRO HDMI Adapter is relevant to owners of an A50 Base Station Gen 3 or Gen 4 who need an optical connection and full Game:Voice balance on PS5. Logitech lists those base stations as compatible and describes optical connectivity and Game:Voice balance as the adapter’s purpose. A50 X: keep its PS5 and PC/Mac audio paths separate
Logitech says the A50 X connects to PS5 via HDMI for 3D Audio. Its page separately describes Dolby Atmos or Windows Sonic over USB-C on PC or Mac. When PS5 Dolby Atmos does make sense
If you are listening through a Dolby Atmos-capable soundbar, TV, or home theater system connected over HDMI, Sony’s documented Atmos route is Settings > Sound > Audio Output > Audio Format (Priority) > Dolby Atmos.
