Not yet. Studies of giant tortoise genomes have identified candidate DNA-repair differences, and laboratory cell experiments offer clues about some of them. But researchers have not shown that these systems caused Jonathan’s exceptional longevity. His age is also an estimate, not a verified count from a recorded hatch date.
How old is Jonathan, and how certain is that age?
Jonathan is an Aldabra giant tortoise living on St Helena. The Associated Press reported in April 2026 that he was believed to have been about 50 when he arrived on the island in 1882. That estimate makes an age of about 194 in 2026 plausible, but it does not establish his exact age: the report does not give a verified hatch date. What did scientists find in giant tortoise genomes?
A 2018 comparative study examined genomes from two giant tortoises: Lonesome George, a Galápagos giant tortoise (Chelonoidis abingdonii), and the Aldabra giant tortoise (Aldabrachelys gigantea). The researchers reported candidate changes involving NEIL1, RMI2 and XRCC6, genes connected to DNA repair and genome integrity. They proposed these as possible evolutionary mechanisms relevant to longevity, not as a proven explanation for an individual tortoise’s lifespan. The 2018 study describes the genomic comparisons and proposed mechanisms.
What do the DNA-repair experiments show?
In follow-up cell experiments reported in the same 2018 paper, researchers increased expression of NEIL1 and RMI2 in HEK-293T cells, then exposed the cells to oxidative stress or ultraviolet light and measured markers associated with DNA damage. Under those experimental conditions, the results were consistent with lower levels of those markers.

That is evidence about gene function in a laboratory cell system. It is not a demonstration that a tortoise’s whole body repairs DNA more effectively, that these genes slow aging in a living animal, or that they explain Jonathan’s age. The distinction matters: a plausible molecular mechanism is a research lead, not a settled cause of extreme longevity.
Do turtles and tortoises age slowly?
Comparative evidence suggests slow aging is common among the turtle and tortoise species studied, though it is not identical across species. A 2022 study of captive populations found that about 75% of 52 studied species exhibited slow or negligible senescence; for about 80% of species, estimated aging rates were lower than those in modern humans. These are species-level comparisons, not proof that Jonathan does not age or that DNA repair accounts for his lifespan. The 2022 study in Science reports the results.

What do other turtle studies add?
A 2021 comparative study reported duplications of genes associated with aging and cancer biology in long-lived turtle lineages and examined cellular stress responses across several species. It adds context for investigating how turtle biology relates to longevity, but it does not study Jonathan as an individual and cannot establish what accounts for his age. The 2021 study sets out those comparisons.
A Jonathan-specific epigenomic analysis is described in a publication summary hosted by Twist Bioscience. The summary says it analyzed sequence and methylation data from an individual estimated to be 192 years old and reports variants in pathways associated with aging, including DNA repair and telomere regulation. A vendor-hosted summary alone does not establish the work’s peer-review status or prove that those variants caused longevity. The summary describes the analysis.

What can the evidence say about Jonathan?
- Age: His age is estimated from historical reporting about his arrival in 1882, not verified by a known hatch date.
- DNA repair: Comparative genome work identifies candidate changes, while cell experiments test some gene effects under specific laboratory conditions.
- Longevity: Studies find slow aging in many turtle and tortoise species, but that pattern does not identify a single mechanism or explain Jonathan’s individual case.
The careful conclusion is that tortoise biology offers promising clues about genome maintenance and aging. It has not yet shown that exceptional DNA repair is what keeps Jonathan alive, and these findings do not establish a DNA-repair treatment for people.
