What dish soap and water can—and cannot—do
Boxelder bugs gather on buildings in fall and may slip inside sheltered spaces to overwinter. They do not breed indoors, according to University of Wisconsin–Madison Division of Extension. Their presence inside is therefore an entry problem, not an indoor infestation multiplying in the walls.

Soap or detergent mixed with water can kill exposed bugs when the spray reaches them. It is a contact treatment: bugs that the spray misses, and bugs that arrive later, are not affected. Colorado State University Extension describes detergent spray as temporary relief and cautions that it may damage vegetation (Boxelder Bugs).
How to use a soap-water spray outdoors
For an outdoor cluster, spray the insects directly rather than treating the mixture as a barrier around the house. Extension sources give different recipes, so there is no single universal ratio established by this guidance:

Apply a homemade mixture to the target insects and take care around nearby plants and surfaces. Detergent spray can harm vegetation, so do not assume a household or “natural” mixture is harmless to landscaping.
What to do about boxelder bugs already inside
Vacuuming is the practical way to remove indoor bugs. Empty the vacuum promptly after collecting them; Wisconsin Extension warns that bugs may crawl back out, and Minnesota Extension likewise recommends physical removal for bugs indoors (University of Minnesota Extension).

How to reduce the chance they get in
Repair screens and seal gaps around windows, doors, vents, utility penetrations, and other openings. Exclusion addresses how bugs enter; repeatedly spraying visible clusters does not. University of Minnesota Extension advises sealing openings before the end of August in its regional guidance. That timing is Minnesota-specific seasonal advice, not a universal deadline; the useful timing elsewhere depends on local conditions.
