It can be associated with lag or crashes in some games, but Discord does not publish a typical FPS loss or controlled benchmark showing how much performance the overlay costs. If a game has problems with the overlay enabled, Discord recommends turning it off for that game and comparing how the game behaves.
What Discord’s guidance does—and does not—establish
Discord describes Game Overlay as a way to access Discord while playing. Its Game Overlay 101 support guide, updated April 2, 2025, acknowledges that users may encounter lag, crashes, or other issues with the feature enabled and recommends disabling it for the affected game.
That is evidence that the overlay can be involved in a problem; it is not evidence that every player will lose FPS, or that there is a standard number of frames to expect. Discord’s reviewed support materials do not provide a typical FPS penalty or controlled performance measurements. The practical impact, if any, needs to be checked on the affected game and system.
Why the overlay could matter to performance
Discord documents that overlay use adds an overlay host process, an overlay GPU process, and an overlay renderer for each game. This confirms additional process activity while using the feature, but does not quantify GPU or CPU use, frame-time changes, or FPS impact. Process activity alone is not a performance benchmark.

How to check whether it is affecting your game
- Choose one affected game. Keep the same scene, graphics settings, resolution, and other conditions as steady as practical.
- Turn off Game Overlay for that game in Discord’s game-specific overlay settings, following Discord’s Game Overlay 101 guidance.
- Repeat the same gameplay situation and compare performance and stability with the overlay disabled. Treat this as a diagnostic check on your own system, not as a controlled benchmark that predicts results elsewhere.
- Decide based on the result. If the problem stops or improves, leave the overlay off for that game. If nothing changes, the comparison does not identify the overlay as the cause; investigate other likely causes separately.
If the overlay is not appearing
Discord’s troubleshooting guidance recommends switching the game to windowed or borderless windowed mode when the overlay is not working. Display mode is also relevant to the revamped overlay: a Discord known-issue notice dated July 30, 2024, said it worked in windowed and windowed borderless fullscreen, but not true fullscreen.
That notice also described a legacy overlay option for people who needed true fullscreen, while warning that the option might be removed. Its rollout details referred to Canary and PTB users and did not provide an ETA for full Stable rollout at the time. Those dated rollout details do not establish what options are available in the current Discord client. The notice described stability, reliability, and performance as goals of the redesign, not as measured guarantees.

If the game crashes with the overlay enabled
Discord asks users to collect the overlay hook log and submit it to Support with a description of the issue and the game’s name. The documented location is:

The version-folder placeholder means to use the highest-numbered folder present in that location. Include the game name and what happens when the crash occurs so Support has the context Discord requests. Disabling the overlay for that game is also Discord’s recommended first troubleshooting step when the feature is associated with crashes or other issues.

Discord’s current Game Overlay 101 guide lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 as supported for Game Overlay and says it does not function on macOS or Linux. Discord’s advice to disable hardware acceleration in its voice and video troubleshooting guide is scoped to video problems; its screen-sharing advice concerns screen-share issues. Those recommendations do not establish hardware acceleration as a fix for overlay-related FPS problems.
