Yes. Phones sold by Cricket Wireless or an authorized retailer are SIM-locked to Cricket, so they cannot initially be used with another carrier—even if that carrier supports the phone. Cricket’s current policy requires paid service before it will unlock an eligible device. The wait depends on when the phone was purchased: six months for purchases before July 1, 2026, and 365 days for purchases on or after that date.
What a Cricket phone lock means
Cricket’s terms state that a device bought from Cricket or an authorized retailer is programmed with a SIM lock that prevents it from operating with other compatible wireless carriers. This is a carrier restriction, not the phone’s screen passcode, a SIM PIN or PUK, or a physical SIM card. Cricket’s device unlock page explains its current eligibility rules and request methods.

Unlocking removes Cricket’s carrier restriction; it does not guarantee that the phone will work on every other network. The destination carrier must separately confirm compatibility.
How long you must wait to unlock a Cricket phone
Cricket sets the minimum paid-service period according to the device’s purchase date:

These are Cricket’s published thresholds, not a guarantee that every device will qualify as soon as the period ends. The policy may change, so check the linked support page when you are ready to request an unlock.
Other eligibility requirements
Meeting the service-period requirement is not enough by itself. Cricket says the phone must be designed for its network, have an internet connection, and not be reported lost or stolen or associated with fraud. Cricket also reserves discretion to deny a request it believes involves policy abuse or unlawful conduct.

How to request an unlock
The process depends on the phone type and whether you are still a Cricket customer:

| Android phone that cannot be unlocked through the relevant app | Use Cricket’s online device unlock process. |

If you need an unlock for military deployment
Cricket directs military members who need expedited unlocking before deployment to call Customer Support at 1-800-CRICKET or dial 611 from a Cricket phone. The contact route does not establish an automatic waiver or a specific processing time.

Not while it remains SIM-locked to Cricket. Once unlocked, check the phone’s IMEI and model with the carrier you plan to use; an unlock alone does not establish that the device supports that carrier’s network or services. Cricket’s own bring-your-own-phone information makes the distinction relevant when switching in the other direction as well.

Can you bring a locked phone to Cricket?
No: a phone you bring to Cricket must already be unlocked and compatible with Cricket’s HD Voice network. Cricket publishes a model list, but says it is partial and recommends checking the device’s IMEI. Check both conditions; an unlocked phone may still be incompatible, and inserting a Cricket SIM does not unlock a phone that is locked to another carrier.
