Sometimes, but not automatically. Calling Amazon Bedrock in Mumbai does not by itself guarantee that Claude processes prompts and responses in India. The answer depends on the exact Claude model, endpoint, inference mode, and retention settings. Direct in-Region inference in Mumbai is confined to that Region; cross-Region inference can route elsewhere, with geographic profiles limited to their defined geography and global profiles able to route across commercial AWS Regions.
Processing in India depends on the inference route
Amazon Bedrock distinguishes three routes with different residency implications:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- In-Region inference: A direct invocation of a model in Mumbai processes the request in that Region.
- Geographic cross-Region inference: Bedrock may process the request in another Region within the profile’s designated geography. That can mean leaving Mumbai; confirm that every allowed destination is in India if India-only processing is required. AWS describes this mode as keeping processing within specified geographic boundaries, such as the US, EU, and APAC. See AWS geographic cross-Region inference documentation.
- Global cross-Region inference: Bedrock selects a commercial AWS Region to process the request, so it is not suitable for an India-only processing requirement. See AWS global cross-Region inference documentation and AWS cross-Region inference documentation.
Model availability varies. AWS’s Claude 3 Haiku model card lists Mumbai support for in-Region and cross-Region inference. By contrast, the current Claude Fable 5.1 model card lists Mumbai as global-only on bedrock-runtime, with no in-Region or geographic option shown. These examples are specific to those models and that endpoint; check the current regional model-compatibility list and the relevant Claude 3 Haiku model card or Claude Fable 5.1 model card for your deployment.
Processing location and retention are different questions
Where Bedrock runs an inference request is not necessarily the same question as where its content is retained. AWS describes Bedrock as having zero operator access and, by default, zero data retention for model inputs and outputs, but its abuse-detection documentation sets out exceptions. For Claude Fable 5 and Claude Fable 5.1, AWS says all traffic may be retained for up to 30 days for automated offline abuse detection; classifier-flagged traffic may be subject to human review by AWS. AWS says this retained content is processed by AWS and is not shared with third-party model providers. If cross-Region inference applies, retained inputs and outputs are stored in the destination Region where the request was processed. These are policy- and model-specific terms, not a blanket statement about every Claude model or API. See AWS abuse-detection documentation and AWS data-retention documentation.

- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.

- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Check the Responses API’s separate storage setting
The Bedrock Responses API has its own store setting. AWS documents store=true as the default; it retains request and response content for 30 days. Setting store=false disables that retention behavior for the request. Do not assume this setting describes other Bedrock APIs. For bedrock-runtime, if cross-Region inference is used and a response is stored, it can reside in the Region that processed it. Details are in the AWS Responses API documentation.
How to configure for an India-only requirement
- Identify the exact model and endpoint. Check the current regional availability documentation and model card; do not rely on the fact that your Bedrock endpoint or source Region is Mumbai.
- Confirm the route is in-Region. For strict single-Region processing, the model must offer in-Region inference in Mumbai. Invoke the direct regional model ID rather than a cross-Region inference profile.
- Review any permitted geographic profile. If geographic routing is acceptable, inspect the profile’s source and destination Regions and verify that every allowed destination meets your India boundary. Avoid global profiles for India-only processing.
- Review retention for the model and API you use. Check the current abuse-detection policy and, for the Responses API, set
storedeliberately rather than relying on its default. - Verify the actual processing Region. AWS says CloudTrail event data for cross-Region inference can identify it through
additionalEventData.inferenceRegion. See the cross-Region inference documentation.
What to verify before production
- The precise Claude model, Bedrock endpoint, and inference profile in use.
- Whether the selected route is in-Region, geographic cross-Region, or global cross-Region.
- Every destination Region the profile can use and whether those destinations meet your residency requirement.
- The model’s current abuse-detection retention terms and the API-specific storage settings for your invocation path.
- The audit evidence available to confirm the processing Region, including CloudTrail’s
inferenceRegionfield for cross-Region requests.
Model and endpoint availability, profile destinations, retention policies, and API defaults can change. Verify the current model card, profile, and account configuration before approving a production deployment.
