No. Checking your own credit score or requesting your own credit report does not lower your credit score. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) treats a consumer’s self-request as a soft inquiry, not an application for new credit. A lender’s report request after you apply for a credit card, loan, mortgage, or similar product is usually a hard inquiry, which can affect scoring models.
The practical rule is simple: looking at your credit is safe; authorizing a lender to evaluate you for new credit is the event that may matter. The sections below explain how to tell the difference, how rate-shopping windows work, and how to check your records without accidentally starting a credit application.

What happens when you check your own score
Your own request to see a credit report or score is not treated as a request for new credit. It is recorded, if at all, as a soft inquiry and does not reduce your score. This remains true whether you are reviewing a full report, using a score feature supplied to consumers, or checking for errors before applying for anything.
The CFPB states on its page “Does requesting my credit report hurt my credit score?” (last reviewed May 14, 2024): “Checking your own credit report is not an inquiry about new credit, so it has no effect on your score.” Its mortgage guidance, last reviewed August 28, 2026, gives the same conclusion: “Checking your own credit does not affect your credit scores.”

A report and a score are related but different. A report is the underlying record of accounts, payment history, balances, and inquiries. A score is a number calculated from information in a report by a particular scoring model. You can inspect a report without receiving every score a service might offer, and viewing either one yourself does not create a score penalty.
Hard and soft inquiries at a glance
| Inquiry type | Who usually initiates it | Why it is requested | Can affect a score? | Who can see it? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hard inquiry | A lender or creditor after you apply or authorize an application-related review | Evaluating an application for a new credit card, auto loan, mortgage, student loan, or other consumer credit | Yes, a scoring model may consider it, especially the recency and frequency of applications | It appears on your report and may be visible to organizations that receive the relevant report |
| Soft inquiry | You, an existing lender, an insurer or creditor conducting permitted prescreening, or another authorized account-management process | Checking your own file, reviewing an existing account, or selecting consumers for a prescreened offer | No | Generally visible to you but not shown to others who purchase your report |
The important difference is not simply whether a report was opened. Both types involve access to report data. The deciding factors are the purpose of the access and who requested it. A lender looking at your file to decide whether to extend new credit is normally making a hard inquiry. A consumer checking a file for personal information is making a soft inquiry.
When a hard inquiry is created
Applications for new credit
Lenders usually make a hard inquiry when you submit an application for a new credit card, auto loan, mortgage, student loan, or another consumer loan. The application gives the lender a reason to assess your creditworthiness, and the resulting inquiry can be included in the information considered by scoring models.

Preapproval and authorization
Words such as “preapproval” or “application” do not by themselves tell you whether the lender will pull your report. Ask directly before giving permission: Is this a hard inquiry, which credit bureau will be checked, and is the request only an estimate of rates or a full credit decision? A preapproval process that evaluates your actual credit can involve a hard inquiry; a general rate discussion without a report request does not.
Asking about rates is different from applying
According to the CFPB, if you are simply asking a lender about rates, the lender cannot pull your credit report. That conversation is different from submitting an application, requesting a formal preapproval, or otherwise authorizing access for a credit decision. If the lender asks for identifying information or a consent screen, read what you are authorizing before proceeding.
What counts as a soft inquiry
Checking your own report or score
A self-request is the clearest example. You can monitor your records, look for inaccurate accounts, or see whether an old issue has been corrected without creating a hard inquiry.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsExisting-account reviews
An existing lender may review your report for account-management purposes. For example, a company with which you already have an account can check information while managing that relationship. This type of review is generally soft and does not affect your score.

Prescreening
Creditors and insurers may use soft inquiries to identify people who meet broad criteria for a prescreened offer. Seeing such an inquiry does not mean you applied for the offer, and it does not lower your score.
How visibility differs
Soft inquiries are generally shown on the version of the report you receive, so you may see account reviews or prescreening activity when you inspect your file. They are generally not displayed to other organizations that purchase your report. Hard inquiries, by contrast, are part of the report information associated with applications and can be considered by scoring models.
Rate shopping for a mortgage, auto loan, or student loan
Submitting several applications while comparing loan offers can create multiple hard inquiries. Scoring models often provide special treatment for inquiries of the same type made close together, but the exact implementation depends on the model and the kind of loan.
| Situation | General CFPB guidance | What is not guaranteed |
|---|---|---|
| Several mortgage, auto, or student-loan inquiries for the same type of borrowing | Common guidance describes a grouping window generally ranging from 14 to 45 days, depending on the scoring model. | There is no single window that applies to every model, lender, or credit product. |
| Specified mortgage, auto, or student-loan inquiries made in the 30 days before scoring | Common models may disregard those recent inquiries when calculating a score. | This is model-dependent and should not be treated as a universal promise. |
| Applications for different types of credit | They may not receive the same rate-shopping treatment. | Applying for a mortgage, a credit card, and an auto loan is not necessarily grouped as one shopping event. |
| Inquiries outside the relevant window | They may be evaluated separately. | The older or more recent an inquiry is, the less useful it is to assume a particular model will group it. |
The safest approach is to compare offers for one loan type within as short a period as practical, while recognizing that no article can guarantee how every scoring model will process them. Rate shopping does not turn unrelated applications into one inquiry.

Where to check your credit report in the United States
The CFPB identifies AnnualCreditReport.com as the official no-cost route for obtaining reports from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. The CFPB says consumers can request reports online weekly from each of the three nationwide consumer reporting companies.
The same guidance says an additional Equifax free-copy allowance is available through December 2026. Because that date-bound allowance can change, confirm the current terms when you request a report. The weekly report-access statement and any temporary allowances concern reports; they do not mean that every report-access page includes every credit score offered by a scoring company.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to check without accidentally applying for credit
- Use a consumer report or score access page. Choose a service that clearly says you are viewing your own information. AnnualCreditReport.com is the CFPB-identified route for the three nationwide reports in the United States.
- Read the purpose statement before continuing. A page that offers monitoring or personal access should not ask you to submit a credit application. If the screen says the request is for a lender’s decision, stop and clarify the inquiry type.
- Ask before authorizing a lender. If you are speaking with a bank, dealer, or loan company, ask whether the next step is a hard inquiry. A rate quote without a report pull is different from an application or formal preapproval.
- Save the date and request details. Note when you accessed a report, which bureau supplied it, and whether the page described the access as a soft or hard inquiry. This makes later discrepancies easier to investigate.
- Review the inquiry section. Look for organizations and dates you recognize. Separate account reviews and prescreening from application-related inquiries before deciding that something is wrong.
- Check all three reports when accuracy matters. Nationwide reporting companies can hold different information. A problem absent from one report may appear on another, so checking only one file may not give you a complete picture.
How to read an inquiry you do not recognize
Start with the organization name, date, and inquiry category on the report. An unfamiliar entry may be a soft inquiry from an existing account or prescreening rather than a new-credit application. Because soft inquiries are generally visible only to you, their presence alone does not indicate that another lender will treat you as having recently applied for credit.

If the entry is labeled as an application-related hard inquiry and you did not authorize an application, contact the organization listed on the report and ask what transaction generated it. Keep records of the date, the representative’s response, and any application you may have started. If the organization cannot explain the entry, follow the dispute instructions supplied with the report and contact the relevant consumer reporting company. Do not assume that every unfamiliar inquiry represents identity theft, but do not ignore a hard inquiry that you cannot connect to an application.

Common mistakes that create unnecessary worry
Assuming every credit check is harmful
The phrase “credit check” covers both hard and soft inquiries. A self-check, an existing-lender review, and prescreening are not the same event as an application-related pull. Identify the purpose before judging the entry.
Expecting a fixed number of points
There is no single score-drop figure supported for every person or scoring model. A hard inquiry may affect a score, while the size and timing of any effect depend on the model and the rest of the credit file. Treat claims of a guaranteed point reduction with caution.
Believing rate-shopping rules are universal
The CFPB describes a 14-to-45-day range for same-type mortgage, auto, and student-loan inquiries and notes that common models may ignore certain inquiries during the 30 days before scoring. Those are general guidelines, not a promise that every model will combine every application.

Confusing a report with a score
Free report access and score access are separate offerings. A report request can be useful even when it does not display the particular score a lender uses. Checking the report itself remains harmless to your score.
Failing to ask what a “prequalification” means
Marketing labels are not a substitute for an inquiry disclosure. Before entering an application flow, ask whether the lender will access your report for a credit decision and whether that access will be hard or soft.
A quick decision guide
- You are checking your own score or report: this is a soft inquiry and does not lower your score.
- An existing lender is reviewing your account: this is generally soft and does not affect scoring.
- You are receiving a prescreened offer: the selection process is generally soft and does not affect scoring.
- You are applying for a new card or loan: expect the lender’s request to be a hard inquiry that may affect scoring.
- You are comparing mortgage, auto, or student-loan offers: keep same-type applications close together, using the CFPB’s 14-to-45-day guidance as a general range rather than a guarantee.
- You are only asking about rates: clarify that you are not submitting an application; the CFPB says a lender cannot pull your report merely because you ask about rates.
What the distinction means for planning
You do not need to avoid monitoring your credit before a major purchase. In fact, reviewing your own reports can help you find inaccurate information before a lender reviews your file. The activity to plan is the application sequence: decide which products you are genuinely considering, ask about the inquiry type before authorizing access, and keep same-purpose loan shopping within a short period.
The broad definitions of hard and soft inquiries are stable, but implementation details can change. Report-access allowances have expiration dates, and scoring models can apply rate-shopping rules differently. For a consequential application, read the lender’s disclosure and rely on the report and score information current for your country and product rather than assuming that a rule for one model applies everywhere.
