Yes. ChatGPT for Mac has two distinct meeting-audio options: ChatGPT Record and the separate Meetings plugin. Both can turn Mac audio into written notes, but they differ in who can use them, what they save, and what OpenAI says about audio and retention.
Record and Meetings are separate features
ChatGPT Record is a recording mode in the macOS desktop app. It transcribes audio and creates a summary canvas. The separate Meetings plugin is documented as a beta feature that creates meeting notes, a personalized summary, and suggested action items.

What ChatGPT Record saves
Record can transcribe and summarize meetings, brainstorming sessions, and voice notes. It transcribes live while you speak, can be paused and resumed, and finishes when you send the session for processing. The resulting transcript and summary are saved as a canvas in chat history; depending on how recording began, notes may instead appear attached to the recording.

OpenAI says it can reference canvases and transcripts from past recordings in later conversations. The recording audio itself is used for transcription and then deleted. The transcript and canvas follow your workspace’s conversation and canvas retention settings. When you delete the conversation, OpenAI says it removes them from its systems within 30 days, except where legal retention is required. A deleted canvas or transcript may take a few days to stop being referenced in chats.

Recording may require microphone and Screen & System Audio Recording permissions in macOS.

What the Meetings plugin saves
Meetings uses the Mac’s microphone and system audio to create notes. It combines the transcript with your own notes and relevant context from authorized connected apps to produce a personalized summary and suggested action items. The notes are stored on a meeting page in Meetings or ChatGPT Space. Pages are private by default; if you share a page, recipients can see the notes but not the transcript.

Starting and stopping a Meetings session
Install the plugin, allow microphone and system-audio access, then start note-taking manually. A calendar connection is not required to take manual notes. Google Calendar or Outlook Calendar plugins can provide reminders and upcoming-meeting information. You can stop a session manually; it may also stop when the laptop lid closes, after an extended period without audio, or at the four-hour mark. Notes may take a few minutes to appear after stopping.

Before recording other people, check the laws that apply where you are and obtain the required consent. For Meetings, OpenAI specifically advises telling participants and getting consent before starting. Its in-app reminder is visible only to you: it does not notify other participants or obtain their consent.

Transcriptions can contain mistakes, so verify important names, decisions, dates, and action items against the original conversation. For poor Record transcript quality, OpenAI recommends using a headset and reducing background noise; a headset is optional, not a stated feature requirement.

Which option should you use?
- Choose Record if you want a transcript and summary canvas saved with your chat, and its documented availability and retention behavior fit your needs.
- Choose Meetings if you want meeting-page notes, a personalized summary, and suggested actions, and your account has access to the beta or limited alpha.
- Do not treat them as interchangeable: their saved outputs, calendar behavior, and documented privacy details differ.
