Does Changing the First Day of the Week Affect Work Week or Date Formats in Windows?

Changing the first day of the week usually rearranges a calendar without changing date formats. Windows regional settings and Outlook calendar options control different things.

Usually, changing the first day of the week changes the order in which days appear in a calendar; it does not change how dates are written. Date formats, calendar week layout, work-week days, and working hours are separate settings. In Windows and Outlook, the exact controls depend on the app and Outlook version.

What changes—and what does not

A calendar’s first-day setting controls which day appears at the beginning of its week layout. It is separate from date formatting, such as whether a date appears as day/month/year or month/day/year. It is also separate from which days count as workdays and what hours count as working time.

Windows regional format can supply default date and time formats to applications that use those regional settings. Microsoft documents this behavior for Access, but that does not establish that every Windows app or calendar surface follows the same setting. Likewise, the available Microsoft documentation does not establish a universal Windows setting that changes the first day of the week everywhere.

Change date formats in Windows

To change the regional format used for default date, time, number, and currency formats in supported apps, open Settings > Time & language > Language & region in Windows 11 and select a regional format. Microsoft specifically documents the effect on Access; other applications may have their own format controls.

#1 Best Overall

To customize date order in the classic Region dialog, open its additional settings and use the Date tab. The exact route to the dialog can differ between Windows versions, so do not assume that changing this option will alter dates in every application.

Microsoft’s Access documentation also notes that short and long dates in Access’s alternate-calendar context follow operating-system date-format settings, and that date formats and names can depend on Windows region and calendar selections. This is application-specific behavior, not a guarantee for all software.

Change the first day of the week or work week in Outlook

Outlook keeps calendar week layout distinct from work-week days and working hours. Use the instructions for the Outlook version you have; the settings paths are not interchangeable.

Classic Outlook for Microsoft 365, Outlook 2024, and Outlook 2021

Go to File > Options > Calendar. Under Work Time, choose the work days and set the first day of the week independently. Start and end times are separate options. Microsoft lists Monday through Friday and 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. as defaults for these Outlook versions, and Sunday as the default first day of the week; these are Outlook defaults, not Windows-wide defaults.

New Outlook

To change the first day shown in the calendar, open Calendar settings > Calendar appearance. Work-week days and hours are configured separately under Work hours and location. Microsoft says that feature requires a qualifying work or school Microsoft 365 subscription.

Outlook on the web

Open the settings pane to find date-format and first-day-of-week controls. In calendar settings, the first day shown in Week view, the days shown in Work Week view, working hours, and the rule for numbering the first week of the year are separate choices. Changing one does not, by itself, mean the other calendar options have changed.

Choose the setting that matches the problem

  • Calendar starts on the wrong day: change the first-day-of-week setting in the calendar app you use.
  • Dates use the wrong order or appearance: check Windows regional format or the app’s own date-format option.
  • Work Week view includes the wrong days: change the work-week days, not just the first day of the week.
  • Working time is wrong: adjust work hours separately from week layout and date format.

If the calendar changes but dates still display in the same format, that is expected: week layout and date formatting are different controls. For Windows’ built-in calendar surfaces, the available Microsoft guidance does not settle whether they inherit or expose a system-wide first-day preference; check the particular app’s settings rather than assuming a Windows-wide change.
