Does Avengers: Endgame Have a Post-Credits Scene? The Hammer Sound Explained

Avengers: Endgame ends with hammering audio, not a conventional post-credits scene. The sound recalls Tony Stark’s first suit and serves as a farewell, not a future-MCU tease.

Spoilers for Avengers: Endgame. The original 2019 theatrical release does not have a conventional post-credits scene. Instead, after the credits, viewers hear metal hammering—a callback to Tony Stark building his first Iron Man suit. It is a farewell to Tony and a bookend for the MCU’s film story, not a tease for what happens next.

What happens after the credits?

At the very end of the original theatrical release, the screen offers no new scene with characters, dialogue, or a plot reveal. The final button is audio: the sound of metal being hammered. That is why people often call it a post-credits scene, although “post-credits sound” is more precise. CinemaBlend’s report on the credits describes the moment as a callback rather than a conventional scene.

What does the hammering sound mean?

The sound recalls Tony making his first Iron Man armor in the 2008 film Iron Man. Placed at the close of Endgame, it connects the end of Tony’s story to its beginning: the improvised armor that introduced him to audiences and launched the MCU film series becomes an echo at the end of his arc. TIME’s explanation likewise treats the sound as an emotional callback, not a contribution to a future film’s plot.

That circular, bookend effect is an interpretation of the placement and meaning of the sound. It does not mean Tony is secretly returning, building a new suit, or speaking after his death; the reporting identifies it as a sound associated with his original suit-building sequence.

How did the directors describe it?

ComicBook.com reported that co-director Joe Russo described the credits sound as a way of saying goodbye to Tony: “There is indeed a sound of iron, which is to say goodbye to him in our way.” The publication attributes the wording to an interview with a Chinese website, so it should be treated as a reported translation, not an official English-language transcript. Does the 2026 Endgame Encore change the original ending?

No. Recent coverage of the 2026 Endgame Encore rerelease discusses additional credits material in that rerelease context. That is separate from the ending shown in the original 2019 theatrical release; it does not change what audiences heard after the original credits. The Hollywood Reporter’s Encore coverage concerns the later rerelease.

Where to hear the callback in context

To understand the reference, compare the audio at the end of the original Endgame with Tony’s early suit-building sequence in the 2008 Iron Man. The point is the audible connection between those moments—not a hidden scene or a clue to a later MCU installment.
