Apple says a Mac cannot complete first-time setup. Once configured, HomePod can handle supported Siri requests and receive AirPlay audio from compatible devices, including a Mac.
Do you need an iPhone to set up HomePod?
No iPhone specifically is required, but Apple’s setup instructions require an iPhone or iPad. Apple states, “You’ll need an iPhone or iPad to set up HomePod. You can’t set up HomePod with a Mac.” The setup device should be updated to the latest applicable iOS or iPadOS, connected to the Wi-Fi network you intend HomePod to use, and held near the speaker to begin setup. HomePod uses that device’s Wi-Fi network, and setup transfers settings such as Wi-Fi, Siri preferences and Apple Account settings.
Apple’s HomePod mini specifications list compatible devices including iPhone SE, iPhone 6s or later, iPod touch (7th generation), iPad Pro, iPad (5th generation or later), iPad Air 2 or later, and iPad mini 4 or later, with the latest applicable operating system. Check Apple’s HomePod mini technical specifications for current model and software requirements; compatibility may differ by HomePod generation.
What if you have an iPad, Mac or Android device instead?
| Devices you have | Practical path |
|---|---|
| A compatible iPad, but no iPhone | Use the iPad for setup, provided its model and iPadOS meet Apple’s current requirements. |
| A Mac, but no iPhone or iPad | The Mac cannot set up HomePod. After setup by a compatible iPhone or iPad, it can send audio to HomePod using AirPlay. |
| Only Android devices | Apple’s setup instructions do not document an Android setup route. Borrow a compatible iPhone or iPad to configure the speaker. |
Apple’s guide does not establish another first-time setup method for these cases. If you have neither a compatible iPhone nor iPad, borrowing one is the supported practical option; you do not need to buy an iPhone solely to keep it beside HomePod afterward.

What can you do without using an iPhone day to day?
Ask Siri for supported tasks
Once configured and connected to Wi-Fi, HomePod can respond to supported Siri requests, including playing music or podcasts and handling everyday questions and tasks. Available music services depend on support and account configuration; some require a subscription, and Apple notes that not every service is supported. See Apple’s guide to using Siri to play music on HomePod for service setup and limitations.
Send audio over AirPlay
HomePod can receive AirPlay audio from compatible Apple devices. Apple lists iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple TV and Mac as sources for HomePod mini. That means a Mac can be useful for playback after setup, but it does not replace the iPhone or iPad needed to set the speaker up. Apple explains AirPlay options in its HomePod user guide.

- Features a 4" high-excursion woofer and five beamforming tweeters for deep bass, clear vocals, and detailed room-filling audio.
- Room Sensing technology automatically adjusts sound based on where the speaker is placed.
- Built-in Siri enables voice control for music, reminders, messages, smart home devices, and more.
- Supports AirPlay, Spatial Audio, Thread, Matter smart home control, Bluetooth 5.0, and Wi-Fi 4.
- Pair two HomePod speakers for stereo sound or use multiple units for whole-home audio playback.
Third-party streaming apps are not all directly controllable by Siri. A supported service can be added through its app and the Home app on an iPhone or iPad; if a service is not connected, audio may instead need to be sent over AirPlay from an iPhone or iPad.
Use the speaker’s touch controls
HomePod mini has physical touch controls for play or pause, skipping, invoking Siri and adjusting volume. These cover basic playback at the speaker, but they do not make every setup, account or media-management feature available without the Home app.

- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Which features are less convenient without an iPhone or iPad?
Personal requests and voice recognition
Personalized features require Apple-device configuration. Apple says household members need their own iPhone or iPad and Apple Account to set up voice recognition and personal requests, such as sending or reading messages, checking calendars and making calls. Apple’s current HomePod support guide, for software version 27 or later, supports voice recognition for up to six users in a shared home. Guests can still ask Siri for general tasks such as playing music, setting timers and alarms, or getting weather and news information.
Smart-home accessories
Smart-home requirements depend on the accessory and the feature you want. Apple’s Works with Apple Home compatibility guidance says non-Thread accessories may require an iPhone running iOS 18 or later, or an iPad running iPadOS 18 or later, for pairing and local control. Automations, notifications and remote access may require a compatible HomePod or Apple TV home hub. Thread-based accessories require a compatible Thread-enabled Apple Home hub. These requirements vary by accessory; having a HomePod does not remove the need for an Apple device in every setup scenario.
Bottom line for buyers without an iPhone
A compatible iPad is enough for HomePod’s initial setup, so an iPhone is not mandatory. If you have only a Mac or Android device, Apple’s documented setup route still requires access to a compatible iPhone or iPad. After setup, you can use supported Siri features, the speaker’s touch controls and AirPlay from compatible devices without treating the setup phone as a permanent remote.
