What an Apple Home hub does
A home hub helps you control accessories remotely and run automations when you are away or not actively using the Home app. Apple identifies HomePod, HomePod mini and Apple TV as supported hub options. The hub’s role is separate from each device’s other functions: HomePod is a speaker, Apple TV is a streaming device, and an iPad can be a convenient Home control screen.

Apple’s current platform is called Apple Home. “HomeKit” remains a common search term and refers to Apple’s smart-home ecosystem and compatibility framework, but current setup guidance describes these devices as home hubs for Apple Home.
Which devices can act as a current Apple Home hub?

There is no documented universal “best” choice or controlled performance comparison here. Consider what you already own, whether you want a speaker or streaming device, whether your accessories need Thread, where you can keep a device powered, and whether you need a screen.

Can you use an iPad as a HomeKit hub?
No—not on the latest Apple Home architecture. Older Apple documentation described using an iPad as a hub, which explains why older guides and search results may say otherwise. Apple’s current support guidance says an iPad is not supported as a home hub on the latest version of Apple Home.
An iPad can still run the Home app and control accessories remotely when a supported home hub is configured. Using the app on an iPad does not make the iPad the hub.

Which Apple TV works as a Thread hub?
Apple’s cited Thread-capable Apple TV configuration is Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet. Thread support is model- and configuration-specific; the fact that another Apple TV can act as a home hub does not mean it can act as a Thread hub.

If you have Thread-enabled Matter accessories, check the exact hub model and configuration. Apple also allows use of a supported third-party Thread border router. The Apple support guide explains Thread and Matter hub requirements.

Set up a HomePod or Apple TV as a hub
HomePod or HomePod mini
- Set up the HomePod or HomePod mini in the Home app, following the on-screen instructions.
- After setup, it automatically becomes a home hub. No separate hub-enablement step is required.
Apple TV
- Make sure the Apple TV is signed in with the Apple Account used for your home.
- Assign the Apple TV to a room through the Home app or the Apple TV settings flow.
- Check the Home app’s hub status to confirm it is participating in your home.

Check which hub is active
- Open the Home app.
- Go to Home Settings → Home Hubs & Bridges.
- Look at the top of the list to see the active hub.
- If you prefer a particular hub, turn off Automatic Selection and choose the hub you want to use.
Is Apple HomePad real?
As of October 4, 2026, the Apple sources cited here do not confirm or announce a product called HomePad. Apple’s June 8, 2026 WWDC release describes software and Siri announcements, not a HomePad launch.

Tom’s Guide reported on September 30, 2026 that a rumored Apple smart-home display might be announced on October 13, attributing the possibility to Bloomberg. That is secondary reporting about a possible future announcement—not confirmation of the product’s name, specifications, release, price, or availability. Until Apple makes an official announcement, treat “HomePad” as an unconfirmed rumor.

What HomePod adds beyond hub duty
HomePod’s hub role sits alongside its speaker and Siri functions. Apple says HomePod can support remote control and automations. HomePod mini and HomePod (2nd generation) also have temperature and humidity sensors, according to Apple’s HomePod guide. These features are separate from whether a specific model supports Thread.
