AOL Email is still active and works for sending and receiving messages. If you have an AOL, AIM, or related legacy account, you can typically sign in and use it normally—though the experience depends on your region, account status, and any security checks.
This guide covers how to confirm your AOL Email access, use it on web or in email apps, configure IMAP/SMTP when needed, and troubleshoot the most common failures (login loops, sync issues, and outgoing mail problems).

Does AOL Email Still Work?
Yes. AOL Email is still supported as a functioning mailbox service, with webmail access and support for using mail clients via standard protocols. In practice, most failures people report aren’t because AOL is “offline”—they’re usually account access issues (password reset, security verification, or a locked account) or client configuration problems.
If you can sign in to AOL webmail successfully, your account is working. If you can sign in but emails don’t arrive or send, that points to IMAP/SMTP settings, app permissions, or spam filtering—not a general service outage.

What You Can Expect in 2026 (Features and Limits)
AOL Email generally supports the essentials you’d expect from a consumer webmail service:
- IMAP access for syncing mail to clients (phones, desktops).
- SMTP submission for sending mail from clients.
- Webmail for access in a browser.
- Spam filtering with Spam/Junk and Promotions-like categorization in many interfaces.
Some accounts may have additional security steps (for example, verification prompts after a password reset or login from a new device). Those steps can temporarily prevent sign-in until completed.
How to Log In and Use AOL Email
Webmail (browser)
The quickest way to validate whether AOL Email works for you is to sign in via the AOL web interface.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Open a browser and go to the AOL sign-in page.
- Enter your full AOL email address (for example,
[email protected]). - Enter your password.
- Complete any verification prompt (if shown), such as a code sent by SMS or an email confirmation.
- Check your Inbox and attempt a test send to another address you control.
If you can log in and your test message arrives, your AOL Email service is functioning.
Mail apps on iPhone and iPad
On iPhone and iPad, the most reliable approach is to add the account using the built-in Mail app so Apple handles the connection details.
- Open Settings → Mail → Accounts.
- Tap Add Account.
- Choose AOL if it appears; otherwise choose Other → Add Mail Account.
- Enter your name, AOL email, and password.
- If prompted for manual settings, ensure you enable IMAP and set incoming/outgoing servers correctly (see the server settings section).
After adding, give it 1–5 minutes to sync. If nothing shows up, verify the IMAP state and password, then force a refresh in the Mail app.
Mail apps on Android
Android performance depends heavily on the email client you choose (Samsung Email, Gmail, or a third-party app). Use a client that supports IMAP syncing.
- Open your email app and go to Settings → Add account.
- Select IMAP if you see it during setup.
- Enter your AOL address and password.
- When asked for server details, use the IMAP/SMTP values listed later in this guide.
- Choose sync options (Inbox, Sent, Drafts) if the app supports granular toggles.
If your app supports “Authentication method,” prefer standard password-based IMAP/SMTP auth. If it offers OAuth, you may still need to use the password flow for AOL clients.

- “Message” Your Email:
- MailTime cuts out annoying clutters to display emails in clean bubbles, just like text-messaging! View your emails as conversations, not threads! When needed, you can always toggle between MailTime and traditional email interface with a simple tap.
- Communicate:
- MailTime sorts all your email messages into Chats and Newsletters based on your email behaviors. It prioritizes emails from friends, so you can focus on communication rather than organization.
- Group Chats:
Outlook, Windows Mail, and other desktop clients
Desktop clients often work best when you configure IMAP (for folder syncing) and SMTP (for sending) explicitly.
- Open your mail client (for example, Microsoft Outlook or Windows Mail).
- Choose the option to add an email account.
- Select IMAP (not POP) to keep folders synced.
- Enter your AOL email address and password.
- Enter the incoming server (IMAP) and outgoing server (SMTP) values from the server settings section.
- Require SSL/TLS for both incoming and outgoing connections.
If the client offers a “test settings” button, run it before finishing setup.
Server Settings (IMAP/SMTP) for AOL Email Clients
If your mail app won’t configure automatically, you’ll need IMAP and SMTP details. Use these server settings when the client asks for incoming/outgoing information.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Purpose | Server | Security | Port |
|---|---|---|---|
| Incoming mail (IMAP) | imap.aol.com |
SSL/TLS | 993 |
| Outgoing mail (SMTP) | smtp.aol.com |
STARTTLS (or SSL/TLS if offered) | 587 |
Also confirm that your login uses your full AOL email address and the exact password you use to sign in on the AOL site.
Important: Some AOL accounts may require additional verification after password changes. If you recently reset your password, your first login in each app may trigger a security check.
Common Problems and Fixes
Most “AOL email doesn’t work” reports fall into a few buckets: login failures, sync failures, sending failures, or filtering surprises. Here’s what to try in order.
Forgot password / can’t sign in
- Use the official password reset link from the AOL sign-in page.
- Verify you’re using the correct full email address (including
@aol.com). - If you get a verification prompt, complete it immediately, and check spam/junk for the reset message.
- After resetting, try webmail first. Then re-test your phone/desktop client.
If your password reset messages never arrive, the issue may be your recovery email/phone on file—not AOL being down.

AOL may temporarily restrict sign-in if it detects unusual activity. If you see warnings or repeated verification prompts, don’t keep retrying in multiple apps at once.

- Sign in only via the browser first.

- Wait 10–30 minutes and then try your client sync again.
Locked accounts can make it look like “IMAP is broken,” when the real problem is authentication being refused.
Messages not syncing or missing
- Confirm IMAP is enabled for the account in your mail app (not POP).
- Re-check IMAP server host and port:
imap.aol.comand993. - In webmail, verify whether the email exists in Inbox or another folder.
- In the app, refresh the account and force a full sync.
If messages are in webmail but not in your client, the client’s folder mapping may be wrong (for example, missing the Sent or Archive folders).
Send fails or outgoing mail stuck
- Check SMTP settings:
smtp.aol.com, port587, and TLS/STARTTLS if the client supports it. - Ensure you’re using SMTP authentication with your AOL credentials.
- In your client, clear the stuck “Outbox” queue and resend after the settings test passes.
- Try sending from webmail. If webmail send works, the issue is configuration in the client.
Also check for “offline mode” in desktop clients. A surprising number of send problems are caused by queue state rather than the server.
Attachments won’t send
- Test with a smaller file (for example, a PDF under 1 MB) to isolate whether size/type is the issue.
- Try sending the same attachment from AOL webmail.
- If webmail sends it, the client may be failing during MIME encoding—update the app to the latest version.
If webmail also fails, the attachment type might be blocked by the recipient or by AOL’s content filtering.
Emails go to Spam or Promotions
If you’re “missing” mail, it may be arriving in Spam/Junk. Search your AOL inbox for the sender and scan Spam and any Promotions-like categories.
- Add the sender to your safe list (if your AOL interface offers it).
- Confirm you’re not using a rule that moves messages automatically.
- If you manage your own domain, ensure SPF, DKIM, and DMARC are configured so your mail isn’t flagged.
Security Best Practices for AOL Email
AOL email still works, but like any consumer mailbox, it’s a high-value target. Protect it like you mean it.
- Use a strong, unique password (no re-used passwords from other services).
- Enable any available account recovery options and keep them updated.
- Avoid signing in from shared computers without verifying the “Remember me” behavior.
- If you notice unfamiliar login alerts, reset the password and review recovery settings.
If you use mail clients, remove and re-add the AOL account when you change your password so the app doesn’t keep retrying with old credentials.

Alternatives if AOL Email Isn’t Meeting Your Needs
Even if AOL email works, you may want a different setup—better mobile experience, business-grade features, or a cleaner migration to your primary inbox.

Move to a different provider while keeping your old address
You can keep @aol.com for legacy contacts and still use a modern email provider as your daily driver. This approach reduces disruption and keeps sign-ins from spreading across too many accounts.
- Choose a new provider (for example, Gmail or Microsoft 365).
- Set your new provider as your main mailbox.
- Update important accounts gradually (banking, utilities, subscriptions).
- Keep AOL active for at least 3–6 months during the transition.
Forward AOL mail to another account
Forwarding is often the fastest way to ensure you don’t miss messages while you transition.
- Sign in to AOL webmail.
- Open account settings and find forwarding options.
- Enter the destination email address and save the change.
- Verify the forwarding destination (some providers require a confirmation email).
Be mindful: forwarding can create duplicate messages if you also check both inboxes. Plan your workflow accordingly.
Use an email client without changing providers
If AOL works on the web but not on your phone or desktop, a provider change might be unnecessary. Updating client settings, switching clients, or forcing a sync often fixes it.
- Try the web test first (send and receive).
- Then correct IMAP/SMTP using
imap.aol.com(993) andsmtp.aol.com(587). - If the client still fails, try a different client on the same device.
FAQs
Will AOL email stop working soon?
As of the latest consumer mail usage patterns, AOL Email remains a live mailbox service. If you see a specific notice in your AOL account, follow it—don’t assume a general shutdown without an official message.
Why can I log in on the website but not on my phone?
This usually comes down to an outdated password in the app, incorrect IMAP/SMTP settings, or a security verification step that needs to be completed first via webmail.
What’s the best way to confirm AOL email is working?
Log into AOL webmail, check your Inbox, and send a test email to an address you control. If it sends and arrives, the service is working.

Bottom Line
Does AOL Email still work? Yes—AOL Email is still functional and can be used via webmail and supported email clients. The most common “it doesn’t work” situations are login/security checks or incorrect client settings, not AOL being offline.
If you’re getting errors, verify with a webmail sign-in and a test send, then apply the correct IMAP/SMTP settings (imap.aol.com:993, smtp.aol.com:587) and clear any stale account credentials in your device.
