Google does not confirm that Android Motion Assist works in every app. Its help documentation describes motion-responsive bubbles over the screen, but provides neither an app-by-app compatibility list nor a guarantee for every app or screen. The feature requires Android 17 or higher and updated Google Play services, and automatic vehicle detection can sometimes miss a ride.
What Motion Assist does—and what app coverage Google confirms
Motion Assist places small bubbles near the edges of the screen. They use the phone’s motion sensors to move in response to vehicle turns, acceleration and braking. Google presents this visual cue as a way to help reduce motion sickness while using a phone as a passenger, not as a guaranteed treatment.
Google’s documentation does not say the overlay appears in every app, list supported or unsupported apps, or describe how it behaves on particular system screens. That means universal compatibility is unconfirmed: the feature’s screen-level description is not a promise that bubbles will remain visible on every screen. If Motion Assist is missing in one app, Google’s published guidance does not identify that app as unsupported or explain a specific app-related cause.
Google introduced Motion Assist in its September 1, 2026 Android Drop, describing a bubble overlay that moves with the vehicle and can be started automatically or controlled through Quick Settings. The announcement does not add an app compatibility list.

Requirements and availability
- Android version: Google says the phone must run Android 17 or higher.
- Google Play services: Google also requires an updated version of Google Play services but does not specify a minimum version in its help instructions.
- Device and region: Google’s help page does not give a complete list of supported manufacturers, models or countries. Check your own settings rather than assuming the feature is available on every Android phone.
Android Central reported on September 22, 2026 that Google Play services v26.37 was extending Motion Assist beyond Pixel phones. That is secondary reporting; Google’s help documentation does not enumerate supported brands or models.
Why Motion Assist may not start automatically
Motion Assist can activate when it detects that the phone is in a moving vehicle, but Google cautions that detection is not guaranteed. If it does not start during a ride, use the Quick Settings tile to turn it on manually. Google recommends adding the tile so it is available alongside automatic activation.

What you can customize
The settings let you adjust bubble opacity, color theme and shape, and choose whether bubble styles are randomized. These options change the overlay’s appearance; Google does not describe them as compatibility controls for individual apps.

Motion Assist is a comfort aid, not a proven cure
Google says Motion Assist can help reduce motion sickness, but its help page and announcement publish no measured success rate or clinical result. Individual results are not quantified in those sources, so the feature should be treated as an optional comfort aid rather than a guaranteed solution.
