Original GBA cartridge support has been demonstrated on the FPGA SP prototype, so the qualified answer is yes for at least the cartridge shown. Compatibility with Nintendo accessories—including link cables and wireless adapters—has not been established. The device associated with RetroRemake founder Taki Udon is still a development prototype, not a shipping product with a published compatibility list, release date, or final price.
Which “FPGA SP” is this?
This question concerns the clamshell FPGA SP, also referred to as FPGBA SP, that RetroRemake founder Taki Udon has shown in development. It is not Nintendo’s original Game Boy Advance SP, Analogue Pocket, or a conventional emulator handheld that merely uses an SP-shaped shell.

A report dated October 12, 2026 showed the prototype running a Pokémon Game Boy Advance game from a physical cartridge. The same report attributed a post to Udon saying that the project plays real cartridges. The prototype has also been reported with USB-C video output and the ability to run games from an SD card.

Can it play an original GBA cartridge?
What has actually been shown
Yes, an original GBA cartridge has been shown running in the FPGA SP prototype. The footage and Udon’s quoted statement are meaningful evidence that the hardware is intended to read physical Game Boy Advance cartridges rather than relying only on downloaded ROM files.
The most accurate description is therefore: the prototype has demonstrated real-cartridge playback, but universal cartridge compatibility is not yet documented. This distinction matters because one successful game proves the cartridge interface works in at least one case; it does not provide a pass rate for the entire GBA library.
What the demonstration does not prove
No published test matrix identifies the number of cartridges tested, the game revisions used, or the percentage that boot, save, and reload correctly. The demonstration also does not establish behavior with every category of cartridge, including:
- Different regional or board revisions of the same game.
- Flash cartridges and homebrew cartridges.
- Reproduction cartridges of uncertain construction.
- Games with unusual memory, clock, sensor, rumble, or other cartridge hardware.
- Cartridges whose save systems require special handling.
Until a final compatibility list or broader testing is published, owners should treat the feature as demonstrated support with unknown coverage, not a guarantee that every cartridge in a collection will work.

What “native” means here
Udon’s statement that real cartridges work natively indicates that the prototype is designed to use the physical game rather than asking the owner to dump it first. It does not promise identical timing, save behavior, multiplayer behavior, or accessory behavior to an original Nintendo SP. Those functions depend on the FPGA implementation, firmware, connectors, and the particular game hardware.
Do original accessories work?
There is no device-specific confirmation yet. The reporting on the FPGA SP does not provide an accessory list, identify a GBA link port, or show a wireless adapter operating. USB-C output and SD-card support are separate features; neither demonstrates that an original Nintendo accessory will fit, communicate electrically, or be recognized by the software.
Link cables
Nintendo’s accessory documentation says the original Game Boy Advance Link Cable works with the original Game Boy Advance and Game Boy Advance SP, provided the GBA game supports multiplayer. Nintendo also notes that the required number of players, cables, and game copies depends on the individual title.

Wireless Adapter
Nintendo describes its Wireless Adapter as an accessory that plugs into an original GBA or GBA SP and enables multiplayer only in games that support the adapter. No report on the FPGA SP shows this adapter working, and no statement from the maker confirms a compatible port or protocol.
Consequently, the safe answer to “Will my GBA Wireless Adapter work?” is not established. Do not infer support merely because the same adapter works on a Nintendo SP.
Other specialty accessories
Accessories that depend on cartridge-side hardware, infrared communication, rumble, sensors, or unusual save chips require their own testing. A physical cartridge slot alone cannot prove that those features are emulated or electrically routed correctly. The prototype’s SD-card capability likewise does not tell you whether a game’s accessory-dependent code will function.

An FPGA handheld recreates console behavior in programmable logic and firmware. Cartridge reading, video output, controller input, link communication, and accessory protocols can be implemented independently. A designer may have a working cartridge reader without having added a link interface or wireless support.

Firmware can also affect results. For comparison, firmware notes for another FPGA handheld have documented fixes for particular GBA game revisions and for save-data backup on cartridges with special hardware. That example is not evidence about the FPGA SP; it illustrates why compatibility can change with firmware and why a single successful game is not a complete specification.
FPGA SP prototype versus original Nintendo SP
| Question | Original Nintendo Game Boy Advance SP | FPGA SP prototype |
|---|---|---|
| Physical GBA cartridges | Designed for original GBA Game Paks. | Demonstrated with a real GBA cartridge; coverage across the library is not published. |
| Link cable | Supported when the game, cable arrangement, and number of copies allow it. | No device-specific confirmation. |
| Wireless Adapter | Supported for games that support Nintendo’s adapter. | No device-specific confirmation. |
| SD-card games | Not an original Nintendo SP feature. | Reported as a prototype feature; the report does not define game or file compatibility. |
| USB-C video output | Not a standard original-SP feature. | Reported on the prototype; output support does not prove accessory support. |
| Availability | Original hardware is an established product, subject to second-hand condition and market availability. | Development prototype with no announced release window. |
| Price | Varies by seller and condition; no single current price applies. | Udon has discussed “around $100” as a target, not a confirmed retail price. |
What the creator has said about price and release
In the statement reported on October 12, 2026, Udon wrote:
“My passion project got upgraded. We’ve been making a lot of progress on FPGBA SP. Yes, it plays real cartridges, and yes, I am considering a regular FPGBA version. I’m still trying to make this work for around $100.”
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
The wording identifies an ongoing passion project and an approximate cost goal. “Around $100” is an aspiration, not a preorder price, a retail listing, or a promise that the finished device will ship at that amount. There is also no announced release window, so buying a compatible accessory today does not guarantee it will work with a future retail version.

What to verify before treating it as your main GBA
If your decision depends on a particular game or accessory, look for answers to these questions from the maker before committing money:
- Which cartridges were tested? Ask whether tests include your exact game, region, board revision, and save type.
- How are saves handled? Confirm that saving, power cycling, and loading after a restart work on the cartridge you own.
- Is there a physical link interface? A USB-C port or charging connector is not automatically a GBA link port.
- Which multiplayer methods are implemented? Ask separately about the original link cable, multiple consoles, and Nintendo’s Wireless Adapter.
- Are adapters required? If a proprietary cable or converter is needed, verify its availability and whether it supports the game’s expected player count.
- What firmware version is required? FPGA compatibility may improve or regress as firmware changes, so find out how updates are installed and whether they can be reversed.
- Is the feature in the shipping design? A prototype video can show an engineering build that differs from a later production revision.
How the answer changes by use case
| Your priority | What can be said now | Practical stance |
|---|---|---|
| Play a few original GBA cartridges | At least one real cartridge has been demonstrated. | Promising, but wait for a final compatibility list if the games are valuable or unusual. |
| Use a large mixed cartridge collection | No tested sample size or universal compatibility claim is available. | Do not assume every cart, flash cart, or reproduction will work. |
| Play multiplayer through a link cable | The original Nintendo SP supports this in compatible games; the FPGA SP is unconfirmed. | Keep an original compatible system available until the maker confirms the port and protocol. |
| Use Nintendo’s Wireless Adapter | No FPGA SP demonstration or confirmation is reported. | Treat support as unavailable unless explicitly announced and tested. |
| Load games from an SD card | SD-card game support has been reported for the prototype. | Check the final device’s file, firmware, and legal-use requirements; do not equate SD support with cartridge or accessory parity. |
Bottom line for buyers and collectors
The FPGA SP has cleared the most important part of the cartridge question: a real GBA game has been shown running, and its creator says physical cartridges work. That is enough to call cartridge play a credible prototype feature, but not enough to promise compatibility with every game or cartridge type.
The accessory question remains open. Nintendo’s link cables and Wireless Adapter are documented for original GBA hardware, not for this FPGA project. USB-C output, SD-card loading, and a working cartridge slot do not substitute for confirmation of the electrical connector, communication protocol, and firmware support those accessories require. Until RetroRemake publishes that information for a shipping design, assume original accessories are unconfirmed.
