The useful question is what “growth” means: more output, better performance, broader capability, or reliable work that people can maintain and trust.
What counts as a “new entity”?
The phrase can refer to several different things, and they should not be treated as interchangeable:

- A new agent design: a candidate set of instructions, tools or other components intended to perform a task.
- Another running agent: an additional worker in a multi-agent system, often assigned part of a larger task.
- An application: software synthesized or revised by an agent.
- An executable research artifact: an interactive tool built from a scientific paper and its supporting materials.
Each can expand an agent system’s reach in a different way. None, by itself, proves that the system has become more capable or dependable.

Searching for better agent designs
Automated Design of Agentic Systems (ADAS) explores how to invent agent building blocks and designs automatically. In Meta Agent Search, a meta-agent programs candidate agents iteratively using an archive of previous discoveries, then evaluates those candidates. Its authors report experiments in coding, science and mathematics. This shows one route to developing agent designs; it does not establish that every agent needs to generate new agents in order to improve. Read the Meta Agent Search paper.

Turning scientific work into an interactive tool
Paper2Agent converts a scientific paper and its supporting outputs into an interactive agent. The resulting tool can answer questions, reproduce analyses, apply a method to new data and interoperate with other paper agents. The Nature paper describing it was published on 16 September 2026. Its workflow checks tools against reference-code results and figures to support reproducibility; those checks are a validation approach, not a guarantee that every answer or analysis is correct. Read the Paper2Agent paper in Nature.
Synthesizing applications
Microsoft’s Apeiron repository describes a research framework for synthesizing and iteratively refining application code through an agent build loop. Its ACL Findings 2026 paper abstract reports experiments across 300 app scenarios, 2,400 personas and 46,338 demands. The authors report improvements of 10.7% in CUA ratings and 27.8% in user-demand task scores against their baselines. These are the paper’s reported experimental results, not independently established measures of production performance. Apeiron is identified as a research preview for research and education, not as software supported for production or high-stakes use. See the Apeiron repository.
Why adding agents does not guarantee growth
More workers help only when the task can use them effectively. Google Research evaluated 180 agent configurations across five architectures—one single-agent and four multi-agent variants—and four benchmarks. Its January 28, 2026 account says the “more agents” approach can reach a ceiling or degrade performance when it does not fit the task. The evaluation highlights task parallelizability and sequential dependencies as relevant architectural considerations. Read Google Research’s evaluation.

A task with independent subtasks may offer opportunities to divide work. A task where each decision depends on the previous one may gain little from extra agents, while coordination itself can add overhead. The practical test is not the number of agents created, but whether the chosen architecture improves results on the task without making coordination, resource use or error handling worse.
Growth can come from more than creating entities
Anthropic describes an agent as a model that directs its own processes and tool use to accomplish a task, working through a loop of planning, action, observation and adjustment. It identifies four interacting components: the model, the harness (instructions and guardrails), tools, and the environment in which the agent operates. Read Anthropic’s guide to building effective agents.
That framework makes clear why entity creation is only one possible lever. A system may improve by changing its model, instructions, safeguards, tools or execution environment—or by adding an agent or creating an artifact. Access and permissions matter too: they influence what the system can do and the risks it can create.

Judge growth by outcomes, not output volume
Creating more agents or software produces more entities. To tell whether that amounts to meaningful growth, assess the results and costs that matter for the intended use:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Task performance: Does the system do the target job better on an appropriate evaluation?
- Reliability and reproducibility: Can people check the result, and can the process reproduce it when needed?
- Coordination and resource efficiency: Do the added agents save useful effort, or introduce overhead without a corresponding benefit?
- Oversight and permissions: Are human review and access boundaries appropriate to the consequences of the task?
- Stewardship: Can someone maintain, update and take responsibility for the software or agents the system creates?
Usage and runtime alone are not quality measures. OpenAI reported that, by June 2026, its daily active Codex users at the 99th percentile spent more than 60 hours per day in agent turns, with work distributed across parallel agents. That is a company-specific observation about its own users—not a general measure of agent effectiveness or proof that creating agents caused growth. Read OpenAI’s account.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why validation and maintenance remain essential
An agent can make it cheaper to generate or revise software, but that does not remove the need to decide whether the result is correct, safe and worth keeping. OpenAI’s 2026 account of scientific computing says that validating scientific output still depends on human judgment. It also warns that low-cost rewrites can contribute to fragmented software that is harder to steward. As Brent Pedersen put it in that account: “With coding agents, it’s quite easy to go fast; for now, to go far in science, there’s still a need for expert guidance, understanding, taste, and care.” Read OpenAI’s scientific-computing report.

Creation is most valuable when it produces something that solves a real problem and can be evaluated, governed and maintained. Without those conditions, a larger collection of agents or applications can mean more things to check and support rather than a stronger system.
When entity creation is useful
- Create or search for new agent designs when there is a specific capability to improve and a way to evaluate candidate designs.
- Use multiple running agents when the work can be divided usefully and the benefit outweighs coordination costs.
- Turn research into interactive artifacts when users need to explore, reproduce or apply a method—and when outputs can be checked.
- Generate applications when the build process includes suitable testing, human oversight and a plan for ongoing maintenance.
The evidence supports these as useful approaches in particular settings, not a universal rule. It does not establish that every agent must create new entities to grow.
