Short answer: AMD has not explicitly listed Ryzen Z1, Z1 Extreme, Z2 Go, or Z2 A handheld processors as supported for its machine-learning upscaler, now called FSR Upscaling. An RDNA label alone does not confirm compatibility. Support also depends on the exact game and, where applicable, the handheld maker’s driver support.
What AMD currently means by FSR 4
AMD now calls its machine-learning-based FSR 4 feature FSR Upscaling. AMD’s current support statement lists Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 graphics cards, with RX 6000 support planned for 2027. It does not name the integrated graphics in older handheld processors as supported. AMD’s FSR Upscaling information is the place to check for changes to the supported-hardware list.

That distinction matters because AMD’s handheld processor page identifies some older handheld chips by graphics architecture, but architecture labels are not the same as an explicit compatibility listing. AMD identifies Ryzen Z1 and Z1 Extreme as RDNA 3, and Ryzen Z2 Go and Z2 A as RDNA 2. Those descriptions do not establish that these processors support FSR Upscaling.

AMD’s published information does not give a definitive device-by-device answer for every handheld. In particular, the available support statement does not affirm compatibility for Ryzen Z1 or Z1 Extreme, nor does it name Ryzen Z2 Go or Z2 A. That means you should not assume the feature works on a device just because its graphics are RDNA 3 or newer.

For a particular handheld, verify the exact processor, the OEM’s driver support, and the game’s implementation. AMD’s general driver package may not provide support for a handheld device; follow the handheld maker’s driver guidance. AMD’s handheld processor information can help identify the chip and architecture, but it is not a substitute for the FSR Upscaling supported-hardware list.
Game support and driver-based upgrades
Hardware compatibility is only one part of the answer: a game must also have a qualifying implementation. AMD describes two paths:

- Native integration: the game developer integrates the machine-learning-based feature. Check the game’s own graphics settings and documentation; the menu may still use the older “FSR 4” name.
- AMD Software upgrade: some eligible games can be upgraded through AMD Software if they use FSR 3.1 or higher and meet AMD’s stated game, driver, and hardware conditions. Check AMD’s current instructions for the full requirements; having an FSR option in a game does not by itself prove eligibility.
These paths are not a guarantee that a handheld can use the feature. A game may not support the required integration, and the handheld’s available OEM driver may affect whether the driver-based route is available.

FSR 1, 2, and 3 are earlier technologies. AMD describes broader hardware support for earlier FSR versions, but each still depends on game integration and availability in select games. An older handheld may offer one of these in a game without supporting the newer machine-learning-based FSR Upscaling feature.

When checking a game’s menu, distinguish the specific option it offers rather than treating “FSR” as one interchangeable setting. Older FSR support does not establish FSR Upscaling compatibility.

How to check a handheld before buying or troubleshooting
- Identify the exact device and chip. Confirm the handheld model and its APU/GPU, then consult the device maker’s driver guidance.
- Check AMD’s supported hardware list. Look for the exact GPU or processor support, rather than inferring compatibility from an RDNA generation label.
- Check the game. Confirm whether it has native ML-based integration or meets AMD’s documented requirements for an AMD Software upgrade.
- Confirm which FSR generation the game offers. An FSR 1, 2, or 3 option is not proof of support for FSR Upscaling.
- Recheck current support information. AMD’s hardware list, game eligibility, drivers, and feature names can change; confirm both AMD’s information and the handheld maker’s guidance.
