Yes. Samsung says that keeping Always On Display (AOD) enabled uses battery because the clock stays visible. Turning it off can help extend runtime, but Samsung does not publish a universal figure for how much battery AOD uses or how many extra hours switching it off provides. The difference depends on the watch, its software, settings, and use.
Why AOD uses battery
AOD keeps the watch face visible instead of waiting for you to wake the screen. Samsung describes that convenience and its battery cost in its Galaxy Watch battery guidance. The official guidance reviewed gives no AOD-specific percentage or runtime comparison, so there is no reliable universal number to attach to the feature.

The practical choice is between seeing the time at a glance and using less power. If runtime matters more, switch AOD off and compare battery use over a normal day or two; results will reflect your own watch and routine, not a controlled Samsung test.
How to turn off Always On Display
- On the watch, open Settings.
- Tap Display.
- Tap Always On Display and switch it off.
Samsung notes that screen layouts and setting names can vary by model and software. If the menu differs, look for Always On Display in the watch’s Settings or consult the model-specific guidance from Samsung Gulf.

What Power Saving mode changes
Power Saving mode can disable AOD, but it is a broader set of restrictions rather than an AOD-only switch. On Watch7 and Watch Ultra, Samsung says it also disables Wi-Fi and wake-up gesture and limits CPU performance, network activity, location services, syncing, brightness, and screen timeout. Effects vary on other models; see Samsung’s Watch7 and Watch Ultra guidance and its general Power Saving instructions before relying on the mode for a specific feature.
If the watch still drains quickly
AOD is only one possible source of battery use. Samsung also identifies background apps, notifications that wake the screen, Wi-Fi or mobile connections, brightness, and location activity as factors to check. If turning AOD off does not resolve unexpectedly fast drain, review those settings and recent app activity rather than assuming one toggle will fix every battery problem. AOD behavior differs across some Galaxy Watch generations
Samsung says Watch7 and Watch Ultra can show the AOD watch face after a palm touch in menus, apps, or tiles. Watch6 and earlier instead blur the screen and show the time until timeout. This is a screen-behavior difference, not evidence that AOD has a different battery cost on one generation. Details are in Samsung’s explanation of palm-touch behavior.
