AirPlay works on some older Samsung TVs, but not on every set described as a Smart TV. Samsung lists select 2018 models and newer compatible TVs; the exact model and regional variant matter. Check the model number and the TV’s settings before assuming it can receive AirPlay.
Which older Samsung TVs support AirPlay?
Samsung’s UK support guide says AirPlay is available on “specific Samsung TVs and monitors produced from 2018 onwards.” Its 2018 list includes Frame, QLED 4K, 4K UHD and N5300 Smart Full HDTV families, as well as model families from later years. That list does not establish that every TV from 2018—or every regional version of a listed family—supports AirPlay. Samsung UK’s compatibility list is the appropriate starting point for a UK set.

Samsung’s US guide summarizes support as applying to Samsung Smart TVs released since 2018, while noting that specifications vary by model and that the interface can vary by region. Treat the year as a guide, not a guarantee: check Samsung’s US instructions and confirm the exact model.

Regional lists can differ. For example, Samsung’s German list includes certain 2018 QLED, Frame and NU models, with exceptions for NU7099 and some NU7199 sizes. A model family name alone may not resolve those exceptions; compare the full model number with the support information for the country where the TV was sold.

Why do some 2018 Samsung TVs have AirPlay?
Samsung announced in 2019 that AirPlay 2 would be available on all 2019 Samsung Smart TV models and select 2018 models through a firmware update. That rollout explains why some 2018 TVs support the feature, but it does not mean that updating any older Samsung TV will add it. Samsung’s rollout announcement describes the scope as select 2018 models.
How to check whether your Samsung TV supports AirPlay
- Find the full model number. Use the TV’s product label or its on-screen information, then check the compatibility list for the TV’s sales region. A broad label such as “2018 Samsung Smart TV” is not specific enough.
- Check the TV settings for AirPlay. Look for Apple AirPlay settings. The location and wording vary across TV generations and regional interfaces; Samsung’s UK AirPlay instructions and US connection guide explain the feature and setup.
- Check the software information if the setting is missing. Review the model’s regional support listing and the TV’s software information before deciding it is unsupported. An absent menu entry is a reason to investigate, not proof by itself that every unit in that year or family lacks AirPlay.
How to use AirPlay with a compatible TV
If the TV is listed as compatible, enable AirPlay in its settings if necessary. Then use the AirPlay or screen-mirroring controls on the Apple device and select the TV. Samsung describes streaming video, photos, music, podcasts and other content from Apple devices. The menu path and requirements depend on the TV generation and Apple device, so follow the instructions for those exact models if connection steps differ.

What to do if your TV is not compatible
A separate HDMI-connected streaming device may let an older TV receive AirPlay, provided the specific device currently supports AirPlay receiving and the TV has a compatible available HDMI input. Verify both before buying; support should not be assumed from a device name alone.
Do not buy a Samsung Evolution Kit expecting it to add AirPlay 2: Samsung says its Evolution Kits do not add AirPlay 2 or Apple TV functionality. See Samsung Singapore’s Evolution Kit guidance.
