Does AI Really Speed Up Software Development—or Just Add More to Review?

AI can speed up some coding tasks without making software delivery faster. Trials and organizational studies measure different outcomes—and do not prove that AI-generated code is inherently harder to understand.

AI can help developers finish some coding tasks faster, but that does not guarantee software will be delivered sooner. Studies measure different things—from time spent on a single task to code review, delivery throughput, and developers’ own sense of productivity—and their results do not point to one universal speed gain. The evidence also does not establish that AI-generated code is generally harder to understand.

What does “faster to build” actually mean?

Finishing a bounded coding task is not the same as shipping a change safely. A developer may produce code sooner, while review, testing, integration, release, or later maintenance still take time. A result about one of those stages cannot stand in for all the others.

That distinction helps explain why task experiments can report faster work while organizational studies find no corresponding improvement in delivery. They may be observing different outcomes, under different conditions, rather than contradicting one another.

What do the task-level studies show?

Randomized trials offer evidence about particular participants doing particular work with the tools available at the time. They do not establish a general effect for all developers, tasks, or current AI systems.

Study Participants and setting Reported result How to interpret it
Google Research trial, 2024 96 full-time Google software engineers working on one complex, enterprise-grade task. Researchers estimated that AI features shortened task time by about 21%. The estimate had a large confidence interval. The authors cautioned that it might not transfer to other tools or settings.
METR study, July 2025 16 experienced open-source developers completed 246 tasks in mature projects they knew well. Participants had an average of five years’ familiarity with the projects. On AI-allowed tasks, they primarily used Cursor Pro and Claude 3.5/3.7 Sonnet. Developers took 19% longer on average when AI was allowed in this study. The result applies to this experiment, its participants, projects, and early-2025 tools. The authors said experimental artifacts could not be ruled out entirely.

These results are not replications that can be averaged into a single productivity number. The participants, tasks, tools, and settings differed. The Google estimate does not cancel out the METR result, nor does the METR slowdown prove that AI slows all software work.

Why can individual productivity rise while delivery suffers?

Delivery involves coordinated work beyond writing code. DORA’s 2024 analysis estimated associations between a 25% increase in AI adoption and several measures of both code work and software delivery. These are modeled estimates, not universal causal effects.

Outcome associated with a 25% increase in AI adoption DORA 2024 estimate
Documentation quality 7.5% increase
Code quality 3.4% increase
Code review speed 3.1% increase
Approval speed 1.3% increase
Measured code complexity 1.8% decrease
Delivery throughput 1.5% decrease
Delivery stability 7.2% decrease

These are DORA’s estimates, each reported with an 89% uncertainty interval in its 2024 analysis, report document version 2025.2. DORA cautions that a faster review or approval does not necessarily mean a more thorough one. The figures describe modeled associations in that study; they should not be read as a forecast for an individual team or as proof that AI caused every change.

DORA proposed one possible explanation for the delivery pattern: increased code generation could enlarge change batches, and larger batches have been associated in prior DORA findings with slower delivery and instability. That is a hypothesis about a mechanism, not proof that larger batches caused the estimated declines.

Does AI-generated code become harder to understand?

The available evidence does not support that broad conclusion. In DORA’s 2024 analysis, measured code complexity decreased and documentation quality increased in association with greater AI adoption. Those are favorable signals, but neither measure proves that every developer can understand every generated change—or that code will remain easy to maintain over time.

Review speed is another limited proxy: moving a change through review sooner says nothing by itself about how carefully reviewers examined it. DORA explicitly warns against treating faster review and approval as evidence of more thorough review. The findings leave a real governance question—how teams keep comprehension, testing, and review quality intact as code production changes—without proving that AI code is inherently harder to read.

What do developers report about productivity?

A 2025 Microsoft Research mixed-methods study combined survey responses from more than 500 developers with interviews and observational work. It found that developers widely perceived productivity and satisfaction benefits, particularly on routine work. Reported effects varied with task complexity, individual usage patterns, and team adoption; the study found less evidence of an effect on collaboration. These findings describe developer experience, not a universal causal estimate of time saved. See Microsoft Research’s August 2025 study.

What should a team measure before expanding AI use?

Measure the outcomes that matter to delivery, not just how quickly code appears. DORA’s 2024 report says AI adoption significantly increased individual productivity, flow, and job satisfaction in its analysis, while negatively affecting delivery stability and throughput. Its practical emphasis is on maintaining core delivery practices, including small batch sizes and robust testing; it also highlights user focus, stable priorities, experimentation, and continuous learning. The DORA 2024 overview gives its framing and recommendations.

  • Integrated VST plugin support gives professionals access to thousands of additional tools and effects
  • Set a baseline. Record existing task and delivery measures before changing how the team works, so a later difference has a meaningful comparison.
  • Track stages separately. Distinguish individual task completion from review, approval, release, and delivery stability rather than combining them into one productivity claim.
  • Keep changes small and test them robustly. Smaller batches and reliable tests make it easier to spot problems and understand what changed.
  • Check review quality, not only review speed. A shorter review cycle is useful only if the team still catches defects and understands the change.
  • Reassess by task and team. Routine work, complex work, individual habits, and team adoption may produce different outcomes.

Why organizational conditions matter

DORA’s 2025 report characterizes AI as an amplifier of an organization’s existing strengths and weaknesses, rather than a stand-alone fix for delivery. Its overview draws on more than 100 hours of qualitative data and nearly 5,000 technology-professional survey responses from around the world. Those broad findings help explain why the same class of tools may be experienced differently across teams; they do not establish a single outcome for every organization. See the DORA 2025 report overview and the Google Research report record.
