Does AI-Powered Data Observability Replace Data Engineers’ On-Call Monitoring?

AI-powered observability can reduce repetitive triage and investigation work, but documented products do not establish that data engineers can leave on-call rotations.

No—not on the evidence available. AI-powered observability can speed up parts of an on-call engineer’s work, including alert correlation, investigation, and assembling incident context. But the documented workflows still leave review, judgment, and follow-up with people; they do not establish that data engineers can be removed from on-call coverage.

What “replace on-call monitoring” would actually mean

“Monitoring” can refer to several different jobs: collecting telemetry, detecting a condition, notifying the right person, investigating why it happened, deciding what to do, and making the change. AI features can affect some of these stages without taking over the whole responsibility. The distinction matters because an automated investigation is not the same thing as an automated detection system, and neither is necessarily authorized to fix a production failure.

For a data engineering team, on-call responsibility also means owning the consequences of an incident: deciding whether a pipeline can safely be rerun, whether downstream consumers need to be notified, and whether a proposed change is appropriate for the affected system. The cited product documentation does not show that AI has assumed that overall ownership.

A more useful question than “Will AI replace the rotation?” is: Which tasks in our runbook can AI perform reliably, with what evidence, and under whose authority? That reframes the decision around observable capabilities rather than a broad label such as “AI observability.”

Detection, investigation, and response are separate stages

An alerting system needs configured conditions and notification behavior. Google Cloud’s alerting overview explains that an alerting policy defines what is monitored and how notifications are routed; when its condition is met, Monitoring creates an incident and sends notifications. An AI investigation feature may work after, or alongside, that mechanism. It cannot investigate a failure that produces no signal within the systems it can see.

That separation helps clarify what an observability agent can and cannot replace. If a team has not set up the relevant freshness, volume, schema, job-failure, or business-impact checks, an investigation assistant does not by itself create complete coverage. Likewise, correlating alerts may reduce the effort of sorting through signals, but it does not prove that every important failure will be detected or that distinct problems will not be grouped together.

  • Detection: A configured condition becomes true—for example, a monitored system crosses a threshold.
  • Notification and triage: The alert reaches an on-call person, and related events are sorted or grouped.
  • Diagnosis: Evidence is gathered to identify likely causes and affected components.
  • Decision and action: Someone decides whether and how to mitigate, escalate, or recover.

AI may assist across more than one stage, but each stage needs its own coverage and control checks. A system that performs useful diagnosis should not be assumed to own detection or production response as well.

What current documented AI workflows do

Microsoft describes the Azure Copilot Observability Agent as supporting natural-language telemetry exploration, investigations, issue handling, and autonomous operations. The documentation distinguishes user-invoked chat and investigation experiences from background autonomous operations. In that background workflow, the agent can correlate alerts within a selected scope, create Azure Monitor issues, investigate those issues, and prepare context for the on-call team. Microsoft identifies autonomous operations as a public preview, so its availability and maturity should be checked for the environment in question.

Microsoft’s stated boundary is particularly relevant to staffing decisions: “The agent doesn’t restart resources, change configuration, or resolve issues on its own.” The workflow is described as controlled autonomy, with the on-call team reviewing issues and taking follow-up action. This is an assistant preparing work for an accountable responder, not documented evidence that the responder is unnecessary. See Microsoft’s Azure Copilot Observability Agent overview and autonomous operations documentation.

The investigation output can still save meaningful time. Microsoft says a deep-investigation report can include incident framing, affected components, hypotheses that were ruled out, recommended mitigation steps, and links to supporting metrics, logs, queries, and Activity Log entries. Those links let a person inspect the evidence rather than relying only on a generated summary. The report format and evidence references are described in Microsoft’s deep investigations documentation.

Google Cloud documents a complementary human-control boundary for incident response. Its “Data incident response process” says AI can correlate alert signals and advise teams, while generated action payloads must pass validation and receive explicit human confirmation before being applied. This illustrates the difference between producing a proposed action and having authority to execute it.

Elastic describes its AI SRE product as handling alert triage and incident investigation, including root-cause analysis and remediation. That is Elastic’s product description, not an independent comparison showing that teams can eliminate on-call engineering. The vendor’s AI SRE page is useful for understanding its stated scope, but its claims should be evaluated against the team’s own incidents and controls.

Documented example What the source says it can do Human-control or evidence boundary
Azure Copilot Observability Agent Explore telemetry; correlate alerts within a selected scope; create and investigate issues; assemble context. Autonomous operations is public preview. Microsoft says the agent does not restart resources, change configuration, or resolve issues on its own; the on-call team reviews and follows up.
Google Cloud incident response Correlate alert signals and advise during incident response. Action payloads require validation and explicit human confirmation before application.
Elastic AI SRE Elastic describes alert triage, incident investigation, root-cause analysis, and remediation. The cited vendor page is product positioning, not an independent measure of effectiveness or proof that on-call ownership can be removed.

These examples do not establish a like-for-like contest. Their documentation describes different workflows, and it does not provide neutral, comparable scores for signal coverage, accuracy, time saved, or data-engineering outcomes. A team should verify the precise capability, supported environment, availability, and permissions that apply to its deployment.

Use your runbook to decide what AI can take on

Do not evaluate replacement at the level of a product name. Break the existing on-call runbook into tasks and test each task against the actual data stack. A useful review covers these questions:

  • Signal coverage: Are the pipelines, jobs, storage systems, orchestration layers, and downstream consumers that matter instrumented and in scope? A tool’s visibility into one layer does not establish visibility across the chain.
  • Detection: Are important conditions configured, including failures, freshness, volume, schema changes, and business-impact signals? Identify which checks are native to existing monitoring and which, if any, the AI workflow can create or interpret.
  • Correlation: Does grouping related alerts reduce duplicate work without hiding separate failures? Review incidents where two problems occurred close together, not only simple examples.
  • Diagnosis: Does each proposed cause point to underlying logs, metrics, queries, lineage, or recent changes? Require evidence that an engineer can inspect, and distinguish observed facts from generated hypotheses.
  • Action authority: Is the system recommending an action, preparing a payload, or applying a change? Find out what validation, approval, audit logging, rollback, and escalation controls exist for each level.
  • Operational maturity: Is the feature generally available or in preview? Confirm support for the team’s cloud, data tools, and required regions rather than extrapolating from a general product description.
  • Accountability: Who receives an issue that AI cannot explain, a recommendation that conflicts with the runbook, or a suspected incident with no clear owner? The escalation path should remain explicit.

Answers should be specific enough to map back to real services and named runbook steps. “The platform supports AI investigations” is not a coverage statement; the useful answer is which alerts and telemetry it can access, which systems it can affect, and what happens when its evidence is incomplete.

A cautious rollout that tests value before granting authority

A defensible starting point is read-only investigation and evidence-linked recommendations. Keep existing alert routes and human escalation in place while the team compares AI-assisted handling with its normal process. Expand the system’s authority only for tasks where performance and controls have been validated. This is a risk-control approach inferred from the human-review boundaries in the cited documentation, not a vendor guarantee.

  1. Choose a bounded set of incidents. Select recurring, well-understood cases from the team’s own history. Include enough variety to expose missing telemetry and misleading correlations; do not treat a successful demonstration as broad proof.
  2. Run alongside existing on-call practice. Let the AI prepare triage or investigation context while the responder follows current alerting and escalation procedures. Keep a human responsible for decisions and changes.
  3. Record what the output supports. For each case, note whether the alert was relevant, whether related signals were grouped correctly, whether the cited evidence was accessible, which hypotheses were useful, and whether a recommendation fit the runbook.
  4. Review failures as carefully as wins. Include missed or late signals, incorrect explanations, irrelevant recommendations, duplicate escalations, and cases where the system could not access the necessary telemetry.
  5. Decide task by task. If the results justify a change, expand only the specific task or permission that has been validated. Keep approval and recovery paths for actions that can affect production.

Do not judge the rollout only by whether the generated explanation sounds plausible. Require the responder to follow its links and check whether evidence actually supports the diagnosis. A fluent report without inspectable support can add confidence without reducing operational risk.

Measure the work, not the marketing claim

The available product documentation does not provide a neutral, cross-platform data-engineering benchmark or a quantitative outcome proving that AI observability can replace an on-call rotation. There is no supported percentage reduction in incidents, alerts, or staffing to apply to a team’s forecast. Establish a baseline from incident records before drawing conclusions.

Compare the same kinds of incidents across existing and AI-assisted handling, and consider measures such as:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Alert precision and missed-incident rate: Did the system surface actionable conditions without suppressing distinct failures?
  • Triage and diagnosis time: How much responder time went to understanding the issue, and how much to validating the generated context?
  • False escalations: Did correlation reduce noise, or send people to issues that were not operationally significant?
  • Recommendation quality: Were suggestions consistent with the runbook and supported by linked evidence?
  • Engineer workload: Did the change reduce repetitive investigation, or move effort into checking AI output and correcting it?

Interpret the measures together. Faster initial triage does not establish better coverage if important incidents are missed, and fewer notifications do not show improvement if separate failures were grouped incorrectly. A useful result is a reliable reduction in specific repetitive work without weakening detection, escalation, or accountability.

Where the boundary should remain

AI-generated context can make a human responder better prepared, but an investigation report is not the same as incident ownership. Someone still needs to decide whether a hypothesis fits the business impact, whether a proposed mitigation is safe for that system, and whether the event requires escalation or communication to affected users. The cited documentation makes human review explicit in the described workflows.

Accordingly, AI-powered observability is best treated as an on-call copilot for the parts of the work it can show and support—not as proof that data engineers no longer need to monitor production. A team may be able to automate or reduce particular tasks after validating its own results, but the evidence here does not justify removing the human escalation and decision function from the rotation.
