Usually, yes—but only for traffic that actually travels through a correctly configured VPN. Your internet provider can generally still see that you connected to a VPN server, when you connected, and how much data moved. The VPN provider becomes the new party your traffic passes through; a VPN does not make you invisible or erase history saved on your devices and accounts.
What your internet provider can see with a VPN
A VPN routes covered internet traffic through an encrypted tunnel to a VPN server. The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) describes it this way: “A VPN routes all your web traffic through an ‘encrypted tunnel’ between your devices and the VPN server.” EFF’s guide to choosing a VPN explains that this can hide outgoing traffic from your ISP and the owner of a local network.

Your provider can usually see the connection to the VPN endpoint, along with timing and the amount of traffic. If the tunnel is working and covers the traffic in question, the ISP should not ordinarily see which websites that traffic reaches beyond the VPN server. Avoid treating this as a guarantee: configuration and which traffic the tunnel covers matter.
What HTTPS already hides—and what it may not
Without a VPN, HTTPS normally encrypts the contents of a webpage in transit, so an ordinary network observer cannot read the page itself. The domain you connect to may still be visible to the network, even though the specific page path and its contents are protected. EFF explains what HTTPS protects.

Encrypted DNS can make it harder for an ISP or network administrator to observe the domain lookup. That does not make the lookup invisible: the DNS resolver you choose receives it, shifting which party may see that information.
What changes when you use a VPN
A VPN changes the network path; it does not eliminate the parties that can observe some part of it. Your ISP sees the VPN connection, while traffic exits through the VPN server on its way to the destination. The VPN operator may therefore be able to see destinations and may retain records or disclose data. A “VPN” label by itself does not establish a no-logs practice.

- Check the provider’s privacy policy: Look for what connection or activity data it says it collects and retains.
- Review transparency information: See whether the provider explains how it handles legal requests or reports disclosures.
- Keep the limits in mind: A VPN shifts trust from your ISP toward the VPN operator; it does not remove the need to trust anyone handling the traffic.
What a VPN does not erase or hide
“Browsing history” can mean network records, browser history, search activity, or what a website knows about you. A VPN affects the network route; it does not delete records already stored elsewhere or prevent all forms of tracking.
- Browser and device: A VPN does not remove browsing history saved in your browser or other records stored on your device.
- Search account: Searches can remain associated with a search provider account, especially when you are signed in.
- Websites: A VPN does not prevent a site from recognizing a logged-in user or using cookies, tracking pixels, GPS data, or browser fingerprinting.

The right choice depends on what you are trying to protect: ISP visibility, observation on a local Wi-Fi network, trust in a VPN provider, anonymity, convenience, or records saved in a browser or account. These tools address different parts of that problem; none removes every trace of activity.

What the FTC found about some U.S. providers
A 2021 Federal Trade Commission staff report examined six major U.S. internet providers after the FTC issued them information orders. The FTC said those providers represented about 98 percent of the U.S. mobile internet market and reported practices including combining data across product lines and using browsing, app, and personal data for targeted advertising. These findings describe the six studied companies and the report’s period; they should not be read as a claim about every ISP today or providers in every country. Read the FTC’s report announcement.
