StravixPL is being studied as a surgical adjunct during nerve-sparing radical prostatectomy, but the National Cancer Institute’s trial listing describes the study and its rationale without reporting comparative recovery results. “Hastens” is therefore an unproven claim, not an established benefit.
What the placenta wrap is—and what the trial is testing
StravixPL is lyopreserved placental tissue placed by the surgeon over the neurovascular bundles that are spared during radical prostatectomy. It is an intraoperative allograft, not a wrap patients apply at home. The NCI trial record describes a randomized comparison of the wrap plus standard care against standard care alone. Participants in either group may use a PDE5 inhibitor as needed beginning one month after surgery, and follow-up is listed through 18 months.
The proposed rationale is that placental tissue may have anti-inflammatory and nourishing properties that could support nerve healing. That is a hypothesis being tested, not proof of clinical benefit. The trial record lists the study as administratively complete, but does not provide arm-by-arm results for erections, potency, or recovery speed. Completion alone cannot establish that the wrap works.
What is known about erection recovery after prostatectomy
Erectile dysfunction can be temporary or permanent after radical prostatectomy, and counseling about that possibility is recommended for every surgical candidate. Recovery varies; age, erectile function before surgery, and whether both sides can be nerve-sparing are among recognized predictors. The International Consultation on Sexual Medicine recommends tracking recovery with validated questionnaires such as the IIEF and EPIC, rather than relying only on a general impression of improvement.

Nerve-sparing surgery is important to preserving erectile function when medically appropriate, but it does not guarantee recovery. A 2016 review by Sopko and Burnett described the rehabilitation evidence available at that time as insufficient to identify a clearly superior agent or schedule. That review is not a current practice guideline, and its conclusions should not be mistaken for evidence about StravixPL.
How strong is the evidence for rehabilitation options?
PDE5-inhibitor rehabilitation
A 2018 Cochrane review analyzed eight randomized trials involving 1,699 participants. It found that scheduled PDE5-inhibitor rehabilitation after prostatectomy may not improve self-reported potency or erectile function compared with taking the medicine on demand. The evidence was mostly very low certainty, with some low certainty, and the review found no long-term primary-outcome data beyond 12 months. Its results concern medication schedules—not placental wraps—and the literature search ended on 3 January 2018, so it does not represent all evidence that may have emerged since.

Vacuum erection devices
A 2007 randomized pilot study involving 28 men compared starting a vacuum erection device (VED) one month after surgery with starting at six months. Mean IIEF scores were 11.5 in the early-start group versus 1.8 in the delayed group at three months, and 12.4 versus 3.0 at six months; the study reported statistically significant differences. At last follow-up, loss of stretched penile length of at least 2 cm occurred in 2 of 17 early-start participants and 5 of 11 delayed-start participants.
These findings are a limited signal from a small pilot, not a prediction for an individual patient or proof that a VED will restore erections. The results also say nothing about StravixPL. Whether and when to use a device should be discussed with the surgical team.

How to judge claims about a faster recovery
When comparing a surgical adjunct or rehabilitation plan, check what outcome was measured and in whom. A questionnaire score, an erection firm enough for intercourse, and penile-length preservation are different outcomes; an early change does not necessarily mean durable recovery.
- Intervention: Is it a medicine, a device, or a surgical adjunct?
- Study group: Were participants nerve-sparing patients, and how similar were they to the patient being counseled?
- Outcome: Did the study measure questionnaire scores, intercourse-capable erections, or another endpoint?
- Timing: When did treatment start, how long was it used, and was the reported result short-term or sustained?
- Evidence certainty: Was the result from a randomized comparison, and how large and reliable was the evidence base?
For StravixPL specifically, the critical missing piece in the NCI listing is comparative outcome data. Without those results, it is not possible to say whether the wrap improves potency, shortens time to erection recovery, or offers an advantage over standard care.
