Sometimes, but it is not proven to prevent them. An external cooler may help remove heat during a long, demanding iPhone gaming session, but the available evidence does not include a controlled test showing that a commercial cooler stops gaming slowdowns or guarantees higher frame rates. Results depend on the iPhone, game, settings, session length, room conditions and cooler fit.
Why an iPhone can slow down during a long game
Thermal throttling is a device response to heat: during prolonged demanding use, the phone may reduce performance to manage its temperature. That can contribute to frame-rate drops. Screen dimming may also occur, but a warm-feeling surface alone does not reveal the phone’s internal thermal state or prove that throttling is happening.
Peak speed and sustained performance are different questions. A phone may run quickly in a short burst yet behave differently after a long graphics workload. The game, graphics preset, frame-rate cap, ambient conditions and session duration all matter.
What sustained-load tests show—and what they do not
Repeated 3DMark runs on iPhone 17 Pro Max and 16 Pro Max
Tom’s Guide reported second-run stability of 68.4% for iPhone 17 Pro Max and 67.7% for iPhone 16 Pro Max after a 20-minute 3DMark Wild Life Extreme Stress Test was immediately repeated for a 40-minute sustained run. Those percentages describe results in that specific benchmark procedure, not expected performance in every game. Tom’s Guide’s test is not a cooler-on/off gaming comparison.

A different iPhone 17 Pro test illustrates why methods matter
Notebookcheck reported 99.7% stability for its iPhone 17 Pro 3DMark Wild Life Stress Test. In its game testing, reported Genshin Impact averages ranged from 86 FPS at the highest 120 FPS preset to 116 FPS at the lowest 120 FPS preset. These figures come from different workloads and settings than Tom’s Guide’s test, so they should not be treated as directly comparable. Notebookcheck also measured up to 41.2 °C on the tested phone’s upper surface under load; that surface reading is not an internal temperature measurement or evidence about cooler effectiveness. See Notebookcheck’s iPhone 17 Pro review and test details.
A cooled benchmark is suggestive, not a gaming accessory trial
Tom’s Hardware reported that developer Matt Birchler placed a cold can on an iPhone 18 Pro during 20 benchmark runs and observed about 25% higher sustained benchmark throughput. Birchler described the motivation this way: “I did some benchmarking today and saw how the newest iPhone thermal throttles, which isn’t severe, but does happen,” as quoted by Tom’s Hardware on September 26, 2026. This improvised benchmark experiment does not establish the benefit of a commercial phone cooler in a game. Read Tom’s Hardware’s report.

- 【20W Power Ultra-Fast Cooling】The wired magnetic phone cooler utilizes high-performance Peltier element (TEC) with high heat dissipation capacity, and its heat dissipation ability lowers the temperature of the main unit by about 95℉. NOTE: Connection to power supply required for use. Power must exceed 20W for optimal performance. Data cable not included in packag.
- 【Simple Control】The cell phone cooling fan has a built-in Type-C interface, just connect the power cord and it is ready to use. Switch between overclocking mode and silent mode with the click of a button. 12N strong magnetic force holds the phone firmly in place and prevents it from falling off.
- 【Compact and lightweight design】The Magnetic cell phone cooler weighs only 0.18 lb in a small size, leaving more space for hand operation and being without overheavy burden.
- 【Quiet Operation】This smartphone cooler adopts noise reduction design, and the operating noise in silent mode is only 30db, allowing you to play games or watch videos comfortably.
- 【Vertical Air Duct Design】The vertical air duct design of FunCooler 5 smartphone cooling fan focuses on the user's actual experience and innovative ergonomic design, which provides a comfortable grip and does not dissipate heat to the hand.
Newer thermal design does not guarantee unchanged performance
Notebookcheck’s October 2026 summary of creator gameplay tests said the iPhone 18 Pro Max reached reported thermal states later than the iPhone 17 Pro Max, while performance on both still declined over long runs. This is secondary reporting about gameplay tests, not a comparison of either phone with and without a cooler. Notebookcheck’s summary therefore cannot establish a cooler’s effect.
What a phone cooler might change
Smartphone gaming coolers are available, and cooling may help dissipate heat. The cited reporting names examples of commercial accessories but does not benchmark them against an iPhone gaming baseline. There is no supported universal FPS improvement, best cooler, or guarantee that a particular model will prevent slowdowns on your iPhone. Treat a cooler as an optional experiment rather than a proven fix. Tom’s Guide’s phone-cooler roundup provides product examples, not comparative iPhone gaming results.

How to check whether one helps your setup
A useful comparison changes only one thing: cooler on versus cooler off. Keep the rest of the setup as similar as possible, and look at frame-rate behavior across the session rather than relying on a brief impression or one benchmark score.
- Choose a repeatable workload. Use the same iPhone, game version, graphics preset, frame-rate cap and session length for each run.
- Hold conditions steady. Keep the room temperature, charging state and case the same. If the cooler requires removing the case, account for that difference; the comparison would otherwise test both case removal and cooling.
- Record behavior over time. Note frame-rate changes and screen dimming during the run, alongside surface temperature if you can measure it consistently. A surface temperature is not a direct measurement of internal thermal state.
- Repeat the runs. Repeat the cooler-on and cooler-off sessions under the same conditions. A single session can be affected by changes in room conditions or device state.
- Check practical fit. Consider attachment compatibility, whether the case must come off, bulk, noise, power source and comfort during play.
If you cannot keep the test conditions alike, the comparison cannot tell you reliably whether the cooler itself made the difference. No controlled commercial cooler-on/off iPhone gaming trial is established by the cited evidence.
Quick Recap
Rank #4
- Rapid Cooling Down: It's the same refrigeration principle as the refrigerator, not the ordinary fan cooling,it can cool down your phone in few minutes to avoid overheat and ensure stabilize your live streaming or gaming experience.
- Universal Compatibility: This phone cooler provides two installation options – magnetic attachment and back clip fixation, making it perfect for most phone sizes. Whether you prefer the convenient magnetic snap-on or the sturdy back clip, it's designed to suit your needs.
- Wired USB-C Powered — Requires 15W+ Adapter for Peak Performance: This is a plug-in phone cooling fan, not wireless. For maximum 32°C cooling and fast frost, use a 5V/3A or 15W+ USB-C power adapter (not included) and a 3A-rated cable. The included 2A cable works for everyday cooling.
- Mute Engine Dissipation: Silent designing fan can efficiently emit wind from all sides, providing a stronger refrigeration effect, no disturbance to your gaming or your Vlog show.
- Large Cooling Area & Plug and Play: About 4.65 sq. Inches extreme thermal conductive cooling area to cover the CPU and battery module, protecting your phone from blackening or sudden shut-off. Use the C-type cable(included), plug and play.
How to interpret the result
- If frame-rate behavior improves repeatedly with the cooler under matched conditions, it may be useful for that particular phone, game and setup; it does not prove the same result elsewhere.
- If the phone feels cooler but frame rates do not change, the lower surface temperature by itself does not show a gaming benefit.
- If performance still declines, cooling has not prevented slowdowns in that setup, even if it may have affected heat.
