But capacity alone cannot predict charging time: the phone’s supported charging rate, charger and cable, charging method, temperature, and phone use also matter.
Why a larger battery usually takes longer to charge
A useful simplified model is charging time ≈ energy added ÷ average power delivered to the battery. If the charging power and other conditions are equal, a battery that stores more energy generally needs more time to fill.

That is a guide, not an exact-time formula. Phones regulate charging, and the power delivered can vary during a charging session. A simple capacity ratio therefore will not reliably predict how much longer one phone takes to reach 100%.
What else determines charging time?
The phone’s accepted charging power
A charger’s wattage is its maximum available output, not proof that a connected phone will charge at that rate. The phone, adapter, and cable need to support a compatible charging arrangement. Check the phone maker’s guidance rather than assuming a higher-wattage adapter will make every phone charge faster.

For iPhone 15 and later, Apple recommends USB-C Power Delivery for faster wired charging; earlier Lightning models use a USB-C-to-Lightning cable for this setup. Apple also notes that a multi-port adapter may reduce the output available to a phone when other connected devices draw power. Wired or wireless charging
Charging method and standard affect the power available. For example, Apple lists iPhone 15 wireless charging at up to 15W with MagSafe or Qi2 and up to 7.5W with Qi. Those are model-specific maximums, not estimates for other phones or a guarantee of the power delivered throughout a charge.

Use, temperature, and power source
- Using the phone: Intensive apps, games, camera features, and high-quality video streaming can reduce iPhone charging speed. Samsung says using a Galaxy device while charging may extend the time to full charge. Apple’s charge-speed guidance and the Samsung Galaxy S23-series manual describe these effects.
- Temperature: Apple says charging may pause temporarily in extreme temperatures and resume once the battery returns to its normal operating range. Apple’s guidance explains this behavior.
- Power source: Samsung’s Galaxy S23-series manual says a computer may charge the device more slowly than an adapter, and that its estimated time assumes the device is not in use. Actual time varies with charging conditions. Samsung’s manual gives the qualification.
Starting charge and target
Time to 50%, 80%, or 100% describes different outcomes. Apple’s iOS 26 guidance distinguishes estimates to 80% from estimates to 100% or a set charge limit; do not treat a partial-charge estimate as a full-charge time. Apple’s charge-speed page explains the estimates.
Why fast-charge figures are not a fair battery-size comparison
Manufacturer figures show how specific phones perform with specified charging setups; they do not isolate battery capacity as the cause of a difference. Apple reports that iPhone 17e and iPhone Air can reach 50% in 30 minutes with a 20W-or-higher adapter, while iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max can reach 50% in around 20 minutes with a 40W-or-higher adapter. These are Apple claims based on preproduction testing—January 2026 for iPhone 17e and July 2025 for the iPhone 17 models—and Apple cautions that actual results vary with settings, usage, adapter, and environmental factors. For another model-specific example, Apple said iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus reached up to 50% in around 30 minutes with a 20W-or-higher adapter and USB-C cable, based on preproduction testing in 2023. That is not a universal estimate or a comparison that holds battery size constant. See iPhone 15 technical specifications.
How to compare two phones fairly
To judge whether a larger battery is likely to take longer to charge, compare like with like:

- Battery capacity or stored energy, using manufacturer specifications where available.
- The charging power each phone actually supports, not just the adapter’s maximum rating.
- The charging method and compatible standard, such as wired charging or a specific wireless standard.
- The time from the same starting percentage to the same ending percentage.
- Whether the phone was idle, and the adapter, cable, and temperature used.
Without a controlled comparison that holds those factors constant, there is no reliable universal percentage by which charging time increases for a given increase in battery capacity.

- Check your phone maker’s supported charging standard and the adapter and cable requirements for your model.
- Confirm that the adapter’s output is not being shared with other devices, and that the cable and charging method are compatible.
- Let the phone charge without intensive use, and check whether extreme heat or cold could be affecting charging.
- Compare estimates for the same starting and target charge level. On iPhone, Apple says iOS 18 and later may display a “Slow Charger” message when a higher-wattage charger could improve the experience; check the phone’s own guidance before buying an adapter.
Apple’s model-specific fast-charge claims also carry an important caveat: “Charging time varies according to settings and environmental factors; actual results will vary.” Apple Support, published April 2, 2026.
