Usually, if the phones use comparable power—but battery capacity alone cannot tell you how long a phone will last. A larger battery stores more energy, while the screen, apps, connectivity, settings, and battery age determine how quickly the phone uses it. Compare real-world runtime under similar conditions, not just mAh or screen size.
What battery capacity tells you—and what it doesn’t
Phone batteries are commonly rated in milliamp-hours (mAh). A higher capacity can provide more energy to draw on, but it does not translate directly into a particular number of hours. Runtime depends on both the energy available and the rate at which the entire phone consumes it.

Think of capacity as the size of a fuel tank, not a mileage rating. If two phones use energy at roughly the same rate, the one with more stored energy can last longer. But a phone that consumes more power may use up its larger battery sooner than a more efficient phone with a smaller one. There is no universal runtime-per-mAh formula.

Screen diagonal alone is not a reliable measure of battery life. Brightness and how long the screen stays on affect drain; display technology, refresh behavior, and what appears on screen can matter too. The phone’s other components and overall efficiency also contribute to its consumption. A larger screen may be associated with greater power demand, but that does not mean every phone with a larger display drains faster.

Google lists display dimensions and battery capacity separately in its phone specifications, and labels runtime estimates as dependent on a usage profile. For example, its Pixel 9 Pro XL hardware specifications list a 6.8-inch display and typical battery capacity of 5,060 mAh. Those specifications do not show that either figure caused a particular runtime. Google describes typical capacity as an estimate based on testing and expected cell behavior.
Why efficiency and what you do matter
A phone that uses less energy to handle the same tasks can run longer from the same battery. Your mix of browsing, video, calls, audio, standby time, and other activity changes how much power the device needs. Brightness, network conditions, and settings can change the result as well.

Manufacturer estimates are useful only with their test conditions in mind. Google says its battery-life estimates use a specified mixed-use profile and warns that actual life may be lower. Its testing disclosure notes that battery life depends on many factors and that using certain features will decrease it. Estimates from different manufacturers should not be treated as directly comparable unless their methods and conditions are sufficiently similar.

How to compare two phones’ battery life
For a practical comparison, look for runtime results measured under similar conditions. Check the test method before treating one result as a meaningful advantage.

- Workload: Were the phones used for similar tasks and amounts of screen-on time?
- Settings: Were brightness, refresh features, and other relevant settings comparable?
- Connectivity: Were network conditions similar?
- Battery information: Consider capacity as supporting context, not as a runtime result.
- Battery age: A used phone may not deliver the runtime its battery originally could.
Google’s own testing disclosures specify a mixed usage profile and other test conditions, including network and location details. Treat a manufacturer’s estimate as a result of its stated method, not a guarantee for your routine.

- Lower screen brightness.
- Shorten the screen timeout so the display turns off sooner.
- Turn off optional display features, such as always-on display or smooth refresh, where available.
- Review battery use by app and check for apps with high background activity.
If drain changes suddenly, check app and system battery use and consider whether a recent update or background activity may be responsible. Google says higher drain after an update can be normal for a short period while the phone downloads and optimizes software. How battery age affects runtime
Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries lose capacity over time. Google says temperature, charging and discharging, and device usage contribute to that decline, which can shorten runtime. The phone estimates battery capacity using its battery fuel gauge, and actual battery lifespan varies with usage patterns and other factors. A phone that once lasted all day may therefore run for less time even if your habits have not changed. Google explains these limits in its battery and charging guidance.
