Yes, compared with the same setup running a display, a headless Linux PC can use less electricity because the display is no longer drawing power. But the PC still uses electricity to stay awake, receive and decode the video, and play it. Headless playback is not the same as headless idle, and there is no universal watt figure for a Linux PC running YouTube.
The useful answer for your setup comes from a wall-power measurement under controlled conditions. Published readings provide examples, not a reliable prediction for every computer.

What “headless” changes—and what it does not
Headless means the computer is operating without a connected display. Removing a monitor can lower the electricity use of the whole setup, but it does not stop the computer itself from doing work. During YouTube playback, the PC remains awake, handles network traffic, decodes video, and renders playback.

ENERGY STAR distinguishes active operation from idle; its computer specification also treats sleep as a separate state. Its formal definition of active state includes “active processing, seeking data from storage, memory, or cache, including Idle State time while awaiting further user input and before entering low power modes.” This is a definition of operating modes, not a measurement of Linux YouTube playback. Published power readings are system-specific
Two published examples show why a single “Linux YouTube watts” answer would be misleading. They concern different computers and test conditions, so their figures should not be treated as a head-to-head comparison.
| System and source | Reported playback use | Reported idle use | Important context |
|---|---|---|---|
| ODROID-H4 Plus, Hardkernel / ODROID (2024) | 15.4 W for 4K YouTube playback in Chrome | As low as 2 W for headless idle in the tested configuration | The product page describes Ubuntu 22.04.4, Linux kernel 6.5, CPU C10 occupancy checks, and power logging once per second for more than 60 seconds with a SmartPower3 instrument. Manufacturer figures are specific to that configuration. ODROID-H4 PLUS |
| UP 4000, CNX Software review (2022-10-18) | 8.4–9.7 W for Full HD YouTube playback in Firefox | 2.4 W | A separate system and review; not directly comparable with the ODROID result. UP 4000 x86 SBC review with Ubuntu 22.04 |
These examples establish that playback can draw more power than headless idle, but they do not establish a typical value across Linux PCs. Nor do they show that Linux is more efficient than another operating system: the cited figures are not controlled cross-platform tests.

How to measure your own PC accurately
Use a plug-in electricity meter at the wall if you want whole-system consumption. It includes the computer and its power supply; depending on where you plug it in, it may also include other equipment. Be explicit about whether a display, speakers, or other devices are included.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Keep the setup consistent. Use the same PC, power supply, browser, network, and playlist for each run. Do not compare a reading that includes a monitor with one that excludes it without noting the difference.
- Measure settled idle. Leave the computer awake in a consistent state with the browser and other usual applications arranged as they will be for the comparison. Record average watts and accumulated kWh over a representative interval.
- Measure playback. Play the playlist at a fixed, recorded resolution and frame rate where possible. Allow the reading to settle, then log average watts and kWh for a comparable interval. Repeat if the readings fluctuate.
- Compare like with like. Subtract the idle reading from the playback reading to estimate the added draw associated with playback in that setup. Keep the whole-system figure too; it is the actual draw while the playlist runs.
- Project from measured energy, not a guessed wattage. For nonstop use, accumulated kWh over a day or week is more informative than a brief peak. Multiply measured kWh by your electricity tariff to estimate cost; rates vary by location and plan.
If the display is normally connected but switched off, measure that arrangement as its own case. A wall meter reading for the PC alone cannot tell you how much a separate screen would add.

Why YouTube quality affects the result
“YouTube playback” is not one fixed workload. YouTube says playback quality can respond to connection speed, player or screen size, the original upload quality, and browser support for newer video formats; VP9 is one example of a format that can affect whether higher-quality streams are available. Record the browser, resolution, frame rate where relevant, and whether hardware video decoding is working when comparing runs. The cited sources do not identify one Linux browser configuration that always uses the least power. YouTube Help: Change the quality of your video
YouTube’s general system-requirements guidance gives approximate sustained connection speeds of 20 Mbps for 4K UHD, 5 Mbps for 1080p HD, 2.5 Mbps for 720p HD, 1.1 Mbps for 480p SD, and 0.7 Mbps for 360p SD. These are service guidelines, not power measurements; the page also lists Ubuntu 10 or later among premium-video requirements. YouTube Help: System requirements & supported devices for YouTube

Choosing a setup for nonstop playback
If the playlist is playing locally on your PC
Measure the computer and any peripherals you actually plan to leave running. Headless operation may remove the display’s contribution, but the playback workload remains. A lower playback resolution may change the workload, but the available sources do not quantify how much it will change power on your machine; test the resolution you intend to use.
If you mean broadcasting a prerecorded playlist as a 24/7 YouTube live stream
That is different from leaving YouTube playback running on a local PC. A local computer or other DIY setup must remain powered and connected to do the streaming. StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Its cloud playback means your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Learn more at StreamNeo.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded playlist that should run as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo lets you upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start at StreamNeo’s free trial.
