Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Usually, no: a capture card does not automatically lower the game’s rendered FPS. But a single-PC streaming setup can lose performance when the game, OBS scene rendering, and encoding compete for the same system resources. A choppy recording, delayed preview, lower display refresh rate, or OBS network warning can look like an FPS drop while describing a different problem.
What “FPS drop” can mean
There are several separate measurements in a gaming-and-streaming setup. Check which one changed before blaming the capture card.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Game FPS: how many frames the game renders per second.
- Display refresh rate: how often the TV or monitor updates. A high-refresh passthrough signal does not guarantee software capture at the same rate.
- Capture or recording frame rate: how many frames the card and recording software send to or save from the computer.
- OBS rendering or encoding performance: whether OBS can composite its scene and encode output on time.
- Network delivery: whether the stream reaches its server reliably. OBS “dropped frames” can refer to connection or bitrate problems, not a game-rendering slowdown.
- Preview latency: the delay when playing from the computer’s software preview rather than from the card’s HDMI passthrough.
How the capture-card path affects performance
Console with HDMI passthrough
In a typical console setup, the card receives the HDMI signal, forwards it to a connected display through passthrough, and provides a capture feed to the computer. Playing on the display’s passthrough path is different from playing through a software preview. Elgato explains the passthrough and capture roles in its capture-card overview.

A card does not make the PC’s streaming work disappear. Elgato describes the card as receiving HDMI video rather than processing or compressing it; in a single-PC setup, OBS still captures and encodes using that computer’s CPU or hardware encoder. A dual-PC setup can move OBS and encoding to a separate streaming PC, but it is a different configuration, not an automatic FPS fix. See Elgato’s explanation of capture cards and streaming.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
OBS also needs GPU capacity to render its scenes. If the game is using nearly all available GPU resources, OBS can struggle to render or encode smoothly. OBS recommends leaving headroom, for example by capping game FPS, simplifying scenes, or reducing output settings where appropriate. Its encoding-performance guide describes these troubleshooting steps.
Diagnose the symptom you actually see
| What you notice | What to check |
|---|---|
| The game’s FPS counter falls when streaming or recording starts. | Check whether the game and OBS are sharing a PC’s CPU or GPU resources. OBS scene rendering can contribute to local load; the card is not automatically the cause. |
| The game stays smooth, but the recording or OBS output stutters. | Check OBS rendering and encoding performance, then confirm the card’s capture format and the software’s configured resolution and frame rate. |
| The display refresh rate changes after the card is connected. | Check the source, card passthrough mode, cable or connection, and display as one signal chain. Each component must support the intended resolution and refresh rate. |
| OBS reports dropped frames during a livestream. | Check the network connection and whether available upload capacity can sustain the configured bitrate. OBS identifies stream connection issues as a distinct cause of dropped stream frames; see its stream connection troubleshooting guide. |
| Gameplay feels delayed when viewed in OBS. | Play from HDMI passthrough to the gaming display if your setup supports it. The software preview is a different route and can have latency. |
Check passthrough and capture settings separately
Passthrough describes the signal sent onward to the display; capture describes the format delivered to software. A card may pass through a signal at one resolution and refresh rate while the recording application captures a different format. Do not infer a card’s software capture rate from its passthrough specification alone.

For example, Elgato says its 4K Capture Utility records a 120 Hz signal at 60 fps unless another application is configured for 120 fps. That is a software-specific example, not a universal rule for capture cards. Elgato’s 120 Hz high-refresh-rate guidance explains the distinction. Its HD60 X supported-resolutions matrix illustrates separate input, passthrough, and capture formats; Elgato labels that page legacy, so it should not be treated as a current specification for all hardware.
Run a practical setup check
- Record a baseline: with the capture card and streaming or recording software inactive, note the game’s FPS and the display’s refresh rate.
- Connect the signal chain: route the console or PC through the card to the display, using HDMI passthrough when available. Confirm that the source, card, connection, and display support the resolution and refresh rate you want.
- Check capture settings: compare the card’s capture mode with the recording or streaming app’s configured resolution and frame rate. Do not assume they match passthrough.
- If game FPS drops on a single PC: reduce competing workload. Try capping game FPS to leave GPU headroom, simplifying OBS scenes, or reducing output resolution or frame rate as needed. These are troubleshooting options, not guaranteed fixes for every system.
- If the game is smooth but the stream is interrupted: inspect OBS’s network dropped-frame status and troubleshoot connection or bitrate capacity rather than treating it as a capture-card FPS penalty.
Compare the right specifications before buying
For two cards to be meaningfully compared, match their capabilities to the signal chain and the software you will use—not just the biggest number on the product page.

- Passthrough resolution and refresh rate: does the card pass the signal your console or PC sends to the display?
- Capture resolution and frame rate: what format reaches OBS or the recording application? Treat this separately from passthrough.
- HDR and VRR: verify support for the specific combination of input, passthrough, capture, and software you need.
- Connection and compatibility: check the card’s actual host-system requirements and compatibility with your chosen software.
- Latency path: use passthrough for gameplay when available, and assess software-preview latency separately.
OBS Project’s certified-device criteria include under 80 ms average additional latency as a certification criterion, and zero-latency passthrough when present. That figure is not a measurement or guarantee for every card or setup.
No universal game-FPS-loss figure is established by these official explanations. They describe passthrough, capture formats, and OBS resource constraints, but do not provide a controlled cross-card measurement of how many game frames a card costs. Avoid treating either a specific FPS penalty or zero impact as guaranteed for every configuration.
