A larger battery stores more energy, yet a foldable phone lasts longer only if that extra capacity outweighs its power use. The active screen, brightness, refresh behavior, chipset, software, network conditions and workload all affect runtime.
Why battery capacity doesn’t guarantee longer runtime
Battery capacity, usually listed in milliamp-hours (mAh), describes the battery’s capacity under a rating convention; it is not a promise of a particular number of hours. Runtime is how long a device can power a particular workload before it is depleted. More capacity can help, but it does not translate into a fixed amount of extra screen time: a phone that uses more power may drain sooner despite having a larger battery.

Foldables make the trade-off especially visible. Their compact bodies must accommodate a hinge and two displays, and the larger inner screen can draw more power when in use. OPPO’s 2025 report on foldables notes, “A larger display leads to higher power consumption.” Screen size alone still does not determine endurance; brightness, refresh behavior, chipset, software, signal strength and the mix of tasks matter too.
What real comparisons show
Comparisons are useful when they identify the workload and conditions. The figures below come from different kinds of evidence, so they should not be treated as interchangeable tests.

The equal-capacity Fold7 and Fold6 comparison shows that identical listed mAh figures do not guarantee identical runtime. It does not isolate the reason for the difference, so it cannot establish that any one component caused the Fold7’s longer result.
Manufacturer estimates are not the same as independent tests
Samsung’s video playback estimate
Samsung lists up to 24 hours of video playback for the Galaxy Z Fold7 and 23 hours for the Fold6. These are Samsung estimates, not independent test results or everyday guarantees. Samsung says its internal test used a saved 720p video, Bluetooth earphones, default settings and LTE; actual time varies with connection, settings, brightness, battery condition and other factors. Samsung also lists the Fold7’s typical capacity as 4,400 mAh and rated capacity as 4,272 mAh. Samsung’s Fold7 and Fold6 comparison.

Do not compare Samsung’s saved-video estimate directly with Tom’s Guide’s cellular web-browsing hours as though both phones were tested on the same task. Video playback and active web browsing impose different workloads, and the stated test conditions differ.
OPPO’s Find N5 claims
OPPO lists a 5,600 mAh battery for the Find N5 and claims up to 25 hours of continuous video streaming or 8.6 hours of Zoom meetings on the inner screen. Those are manufacturer claims, not independent test results. OPPO attributes the phone’s endurance to its silicon-carbon battery, Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset and system-level power optimisations; the claim does not quantify how much each factor contributes. How to compare foldable battery life fairly
Before deciding that one model lasts longer, check whether the comparison holds the important conditions reasonably constant:
- Capacity definition: Check whether the listed figure is typical or rated, and whether it applies to the version sold in your region.
- Active display: Note whether the cover screen or inner screen was used. Main-screen size and use can change power draw.
- Screen settings: Look for brightness and refresh-rate details, including whether adaptive refresh was enabled.
- Workload: Continuous video, cellular browsing and video meetings are different tasks; their runtimes cannot be compared as if they were one test.
- Network and test method: Check the connection type, signal conditions if stated, test start and end criteria, and whether the figure is a manufacturer estimate, third-party lab estimate or editorial test.
For example, Samsung’s video figure is an internal saved-file estimate, while Tom’s Guide’s Fold7 result comes from continuous cellular browsing with the main display active. Each can help answer a different question, but neither predicts every person’s everyday battery life.

What foldable battery-capacity increases tell you
OPPO’s 2025 report lists its book-style foldable battery capacities as 4,500 mAh for Find N, 4,520 mAh for Find N2, 4,805 mAh for Find N3 and 5,600 mAh for Find N5—a 19% increase across that sequence. The report also notes that a larger display uses more power. This history shows how capacity can grow alongside design changes; it does not establish a predictable runtime gain for each added mAh. How to use battery figures when choosing a phone
Start with controlled runtime results for the specific models you are considering, and prefer comparisons using the same test protocol and screen conditions. Use mAh as context, not as a ranking on its own. If your routine relies heavily on the inner display, prioritize results that test that screen; if you mostly use the cover screen, a large-screen browsing result may be less representative of your use.

When only a manufacturer’s estimate is available, treat it as a result for the stated task and conditions—not a prediction of mixed daily use. Samsung notes that its actual battery life varies with network environment, features and apps, call and message frequency, charging history and other factors.
