Not necessarily—but a custom thumbnail is a worthwhile part of packaging a 24/7 YouTube stream. YouTube recommends custom thumbnails, but that does not establish that one will increase clicks for every stream. Judge it in YouTube Studio alongside the title, traffic sources, views and average view duration, rather than treating click-through rate as proof by itself.
What a custom thumbnail can—and cannot—tell you
A thumbnail is a controllable part of how a continuous stream is presented to potential viewers. YouTube says thumbnails and titles give viewers a snapshot that helps them decide whether to watch, and recommends custom thumbnails. Its guidance also says that 90% of the best-performing videos have custom thumbnails. The reviewed guidance does not state the year or the underlying sample and method, and that statistic does not prove that custom thumbnails cause higher click-through rates.

For live content, YouTube describes the viewer journey this way: “Appeal: When your video is recommended, does your content catch the viewer’s eye and make them click? (Click-through rate)” The platform’s live analytics guidance treats appeal as the combined effect of the thumbnail, title and stream content—not the thumbnail alone. So the practical answer is to use an accurate, legible custom image if you can, then assess whether the overall packaging is reaching the right viewers and holding their attention. Do not assume that a higher CTR automatically means a more successful stream.

How to read impressions click-through rate
Impressions click-through rate (CTR) is the share of registered YouTube thumbnail impressions that led to a view. It is useful for understanding how often viewers chose to watch after encountering the stream on eligible YouTube surfaces, but it is not a complete measure of reach or satisfaction.
YouTube says half of all channels and videos have an impressions CTR between 2% and 10%. That is broad context, not a target or forecast for an individual always-on stream. CTR varies with the content, audience and place an impression appears. YouTube advises comparing performance over time and avoiding conclusions based on too little data or small fluctuations. Registered impressions also have a defined scope: YouTube does not include encounters on external websites and apps in the thumbnail-impression count. As a result, Studio CTR does not capture every encounter with an embedded stream or off-platform promotion. YouTube explains which thumbnail impressions and watch time are counted.

For a 24/7 stream, look beyond a single CTR figure. YouTube’s Live analytics guidance includes impressions, impressions CTR, views and average view duration. - Impressions: How much eligible exposure the stream received. A CTR shift on very few impressions is weak evidence.
- Impressions CTR: How often eligible impressions led to a view. Consider which discovery surface and audience supplied those impressions.
- Views: Read these with impressions and traffic sources; a CTR change alone does not explain the overall result.
- Average view duration: Check whether viewers who click stay. If clicks rise but viewing duration disappoints, the thumbnail or title may be promising something the stream does not deliver.
- Traffic sources: Home or Suggested, Search and subscriber traffic can behave differently. A changing mix can move CTR even when the thumbnail stays the same.
YouTube warns against clickbait: if a title or thumbnail encourages clicks but viewers leave quickly, low average view duration can make recommendations less likely. An effective thumbnail should set an expectation the stream actually meets.
A practical way to compare thumbnail approaches
YouTube’s published guidance does not establish a controlled thumbnail experiment for a continuous stream. The following is a practical editorial comparison, not a built-in YouTube test or a guarantee of causality.

- Establish a baseline. In YouTube Studio, open the stream’s Content analytics and use the Live filter. Record impressions, impressions CTR, views, average view duration and traffic sources over a meaningful period.
- Change one thing. Update the thumbnail while keeping the title and other packaging stable where practical. Note when the new image went live.
- Compare equivalent windows. Use time periods with similar traffic-source mixes and audience conditions where possible. A different mix of Search, Home, Suggested or subscriber traffic can affect CTR.
- Allow for enough exposure. Do not treat a small movement on very few impressions as a reliable result. YouTube cautions against drawing conclusions from insufficient data or small fluctuations.
- Keep the image only if the combined result is useful. Look for a stronger CTR against a comparable baseline while average view duration and views remain healthy. The objective is a good viewing experience, not clicks in isolation.
Make the image clear, accurate and eligible
YouTube recommends a 16:9 aspect ratio for video thumbnails. To upload a custom thumbnail, the account must be verified; the image must also follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines. Availability and limits may vary by country or region and channel history, so check the current eligibility shown for your account. - Choose an image that accurately represents the live stream and its content.
- Keep the main subject and any text easy to understand at small display sizes; YouTube recommends simple, legible designs.
- Follow Community Guidelines and avoid a visual promise the stream does not fulfill.
- Recheck the image in the places viewers are likely to encounter it, rather than relying only on a full-size preview.
A custom thumbnail is not required for the CTR metric to exist, and YouTube’s guidance does not establish that you need paid design software, a camera, lighting or a drawing tablet to make one.
