What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Usually, yes: 120Hz can make scrolling and interface animations look and feel smoother than 60Hz. The benefit is most noticeable during motion, not when reading a still page. It does not make a budget phone’s processor faster or guarantee that games run at 120 frames per second, and its battery impact varies by device and settings.
What 120Hz changes in everyday use
A display’s refresh rate is how often it can update the image. At 120Hz, it can refresh up to 120 times per second; at 60Hz, up to 60. When the phone and app can supply the corresponding motion, more frequent updates can make scrolling, navigation, and animations appear smoother.

The difference is easiest to notice when swiping through feeds, menus, or long web pages. If you mostly read static text or watch video recorded at a standard frame rate, you may see less benefit. A higher refresh rate is a smoother-motion option, not an across-the-board improvement to everything on screen.
Does 120Hz make a budget phone faster?
No. The display’s refresh rate, the phone’s processing speed, and the frame rate an app or game actually renders are related but separate. A 120Hz panel can show motion more smoothly when the rest of the system keeps up; it cannot remove delays when opening apps or guarantee a game will render 120 frames per second.

That distinction shows up in reviews of entry-level phones. Tom’s Guide found that the Motorola Moto G (2026) handles basic tasks generally well but can stutter during swipes and drop frames in demanding games. GSMArena’s entry-level guide describes the Xiaomi Redmi Note 14 5G’s 120Hz AMOLED screen positively while noting that the phone itself is not especially fast. A fluid display and a fast phone are not the same thing.
Game performance also depends on the handset’s hardware and software, as well as whether the game supports a high frame rate on that particular device. Check the performance of the specific games and apps you use rather than treating “120Hz” as a promise of 120 fps.

Does 120Hz drain more battery?
It can use more power, but the effect depends on the phone, its refresh-rate mode, and what you do with it. In Tom’s Guide’s 2026 cellular web-surfing test, the Motorola Moto G (2026) lasted 19 hours 11 minutes in adaptive Smart & Balanced mode and 18.5 hours with its display locked at 120Hz. Those results belong to that phone and test—not a universal estimate of how much battery 120Hz costs on every budget device.

Android Authority reports that the Samsung Galaxy A26 5G requires users to choose fixed 120Hz or 60Hz rather than offering adaptive switching. GSMArena’s guide also notes that the Galaxy A17 5G lacks automatic refresh-rate switching. Check the settings and behavior of the exact model you are considering; the maximum refresh-rate specification alone does not tell you how the phone manages it.

Compare the whole screen, not just its refresh rate
A screen can be smooth but still have drawbacks that matter more in daily use. Consider panel quality, brightness outdoors, sharpness, and how the display looks at your preferred brightness. For example, Android Authority describes the Galaxy A26 5G’s AMOLED colors as vivid but says its brightness is only just usable in strong sunlight. That is a separate part of the screen experience from its 120Hz refresh rate.
Also weigh the display against the phone’s overall responsiveness and battery behavior. Model availability and configurations vary by country, and the cited reviews do not establish local price or stock; check the version sold where you live.

Is 120Hz worth it on a budget phone?
It is more likely to matter if you scroll often and enjoy smoother interface motion. A 60Hz phone may be a better fit if you rarely notice the difference or would rather prioritize other features. Before choosing, compare the specific phones on these points:
