No. A 10,000mAh phone battery does not automatically last twice as long as a 5,000mAh battery. mAh measures electric charge capacity, not runtime; voltage and the phone’s power use matter too. Even if both batteries store roughly twice the energy at the same voltage, twice the runtime is only plausible when the phones draw comparable power under comparable conditions.
What does mAh tell you?
mAh means milliamp-hours: it describes how much electric charge a battery can hold. It does not, by itself, tell you how much energy the battery stores or how many hours a phone will run. Energy depends on both charge and voltage, so watt-hours (Wh) are more useful for comparing batteries when the voltage differs or is unknown. A useful, limited analogy is a larger fuel tank: it can hold more, but distance also depends on how quickly the vehicle uses fuel. A phone’s demand changes from moment to moment. The display, modem, processor, graphics hardware, sensors, and other components all contribute to power use.
Why doesn’t twice the battery capacity guarantee twice the runtime?
Runtime depends on stored energy divided by average power consumption. A phone using more power per hour can run for less time even with a larger battery. The balance changes with the task: a call, local video playback, streamed video, browsing, gaming, and standby do not place the same demands on a phone.

Settings and conditions matter as well. Screen brightness, network connection and signal quality, software, and audio setup can affect consumption. Samsung describes separate battery tests for activities such as calls, audio, video, and internet use, and cautions that actual battery life changes with settings, network conditions, and use. Its battery-life guidance is specific to its stated methods, not a universal runtime promise.
When would 10,000mAh approach twice the runtime?
If the 10,000mAh and 5,000mAh figures refer to internal phone batteries at the same nominal voltage, the larger battery suggests roughly twice the charge capacity and, at equal voltage, roughly twice the energy. Runtime could approach a 2:1 ratio if the phones also use power at similar average rates and are tested in comparable conditions.

Those conditions are demanding: two phones may have different components, software, settings, signal conditions, and battery health. If voltage is not given, mAh alone does not establish a precise energy ratio. So treat 10,000mAh as a clue about capacity, not a promise of twice the hours.
How to compare battery-life claims fairly
- Compare energy first. Use Wh when the manufacturer provides it. If only mAh is listed, check whether the batteries’ voltage is known before drawing an energy comparison.
- Match the activity. Compare the same task, such as local video with local video or streamed video with streamed video. A result for one activity does not establish runtime for another.
- Check the test conditions. Look for details such as brightness, network conditions, software, and audio setup. Different methods can produce results that are not directly comparable.
- Read the metric carefully. “Up to” playback figures are scenario-specific estimates; standardized endurance figures are a different kind of measure. Do not treat either as a guaranteed result for everyday mixed use.
- Account for battery age. Compare batteries in similar condition. Lithium-ion batteries chemically age, retain less charge, and may provide fewer hours between charges, as Apple explains in its battery and performance guidance.
What published figures can—and can’t—show
Product specifications illustrate why capacity and runtime should be read as separate measurements, but figures from different devices or test methods do not prove a universal relationship between mAh and runtime.

Does battery age change the answer?
Yes. Battery capacity declines as a lithium-ion battery chemically ages, so an older phone may have fewer hours between charges than it did with a new battery. Apple distinguishes battery life—the time a device runs before it needs recharging—from battery lifespan, the period before the battery needs replacement. Its explanation is iPhone-specific for interface details, but the aging point is relevant when comparing phones: a used battery is not equivalent to a new one.

Use the number as an indication of charge capacity, not as a runtime multiplier. To estimate whether one phone will last longer, look for Wh where available, then compare the same activity under similar test conditions and account for battery age. Without those details, the mAh label cannot answer how many hours the phone will last.
