For school or organized competition, choose to the governing rules—not a generic “dodgeball set” label. Foam and cloth are different formats, and their balls are not automatically interchangeable.
Start with the format your game uses
Dodgeball has no single universal ball format. The World Dodgeball Federation (WDBF) publishes separate foam and cloth rules, alongside youth and grassroots adaptations. Its live rules page lists foam and cloth as current formats and shows May 2026 revision dates.

Foam for casual and youth play
Foam is a sensible place to begin when shopping for recreational play: it is a recognized format and commonly used in youth and casual settings. Search for a foam dodgeball set, but verify the size, number of balls, and age guidance on the specific listing before buying.
Cloth for cloth-rule games
If your players follow cloth rules, look for a cloth dodgeball set. Cloth and foam differ in construction and handling, so do not assume that a set designed for one format will meet the requirements of the other.

Match size and quantity to the rules
Ball size and set count can vary by format and age group. As a concrete example, the WDBF’s 2022 rules document specifies six foam balls and five cloth balls. For its foam balls, it gives a diameter of 17.8 cm and a weight of 134–146 g. This is an older document; check the live rules and the event organizer’s current requirements before treating those figures as current competition specifications.
Age-group rules can change both the format and the quantity. British Dodgeball’s 2024/25 school regulations, version 2, published September 2, 2024, specify the following for that season’s British school competitions:

These are British Dodgeball school competition requirements for the 2024/25 season, not general recommendations for every school or recreational game.

- Format: Confirm whether your game uses foam, cloth, or another recreational type.
- Size and material: Compare the listing with the age-group or format rules you need to follow.
- Quantity: Check how many balls the rules require; a set’s name does not guarantee the right count.
- Players and setting: Recreational, school, and sanctioned competition needs may differ.
- Approval: For official competition, check whether the organizer requires an approved ball. The WDBF’s 2022 rules document says official competitions must use WDBF-approved balls; confirm current event requirements.
Check the governing rules for your event
For organized play, consult the governing organization and event organizer before purchasing. The WDBF constitution and by-laws describe how ball composition, size, and surface can vary by discipline. In the United States, USA Dodgeball’s rules page is the relevant starting point; the available information describes a 2025-season rules update, so verify requirements for any later season directly with the organization or event.

Retail descriptions alone cannot establish that a set is suitable for sanctioned play. Confirm the exact ball specification and any approval requirement with the relevant ruleset rather than relying on a broad product title.
