Those records—often represented in a JSON-like form—can contain nested objects and arrays, and are shaped around the information an application needs to read and update. A flexible schema can evolve, but it is still a structure the application must manage.
What is a document data model?
The phrase can mean either the way an application arranges its data into document-shaped records or the broader data approach used by a document-oriented database. In either case, a “document” is a logical data record—not necessarily a PDF, word-processing file, or other file.

A document is built from field-and-value pairs. For example, a customer record might include a name, contact details, and an address represented as a nested object. An array could hold multiple addresses or related items. This lets a record represent a compound application object in one structured unit.

How does the model organize data?
Fields provide structure
Fields give values names and roles: a record might have a name field, an email field, and an orders array. Nested documents and arrays can group information that belongs to a larger object. The exact types and storage details vary by database.
Related data may be embedded or kept separately
One design choice is whether to put related information inside a document or represent it separately and connect it when needed. MongoDB’s modeling guidance recommends storing data together when it is accessed together, which can reduce the need for a request to collect related values from several records. That is a design principle, not a rule that everything related must be embedded: access patterns and relationship needs determine suitable document boundaries. MongoDB: Data Modeling
Schema flexibility still requires care
Documents in a collection may have different fields or types in MongoDB. Couchbase likewise describes a flexible schema that applications can evolve over time. This is often called a flexible schema, not an absence of structure: applications still need to define, maintain, and validate the shapes they expect, or inconsistent data can make reads and updates harder to manage. Couchbase: The Couchbase Data Model
How does a document model differ from a relational model?
The central contrast is the way data is grouped: a document model uses structured records that may contain nested values and arrays, while a relational model organizes data into tables and rows. Related information that might be split across related tables can instead be embedded in a document when that matches the application’s access patterns. It can also remain separate when that better fits the relationships or update needs.

These approaches differ in structure and modeling choices; neither alone establishes that a system will be faster, simpler, or easier to scale. A sound choice depends on the application’s read and update patterns, relationship requirements, and database behavior. Schema enforcement and transaction semantics also depend on the particular database and its configuration, so they should not be generalized from the term “document data model.”

Document databases share a document-oriented approach, but implementation specifics are not universal:
- Representation and data types: MongoDB uses BSON, which extends JSON-like documents with additional data types. MongoDB: Documents
- Identifiers: MongoDB standard collections use an
_idfield. Do not assume another document database uses the same identifier convention. MongoDB: Documents - Update behavior: Apache CouchDB documents use uniquely named records and optimistic updates; a save can encounter a conflict if another client has saved first. This is a CouchDB behavior, not a defining property of every document model. Apache CouchDB: Technical Overview—Document Storage
When is the concept useful?
Understanding the model helps when deciding how an application should represent entities such as customers, products, or orders, and how much related information to keep in each record. Start with the data the application needs to retrieve or change together; then choose document boundaries that fit those operations and relationships. Treat flexibility as room to evolve a deliberate structure, not permission to leave data shapes undefined.
