Docling converts varied files into a structured document representation that an AI application can process. It is a document conversion and understanding layer—not an LLM or a complete retrieval system—and its output still needs to be checked and shaped for your application.
What Docling does in an AI pipeline
Docling is an open-source document-processing toolkit associated with IBM Research and hosted by the LF AI & Data Foundation. Its role is to take source documents, interpret their content and structure, and make the result available in forms downstream software can use. The project describes its purpose as parsing diverse formats, providing advanced PDF understanding, and integrating with generative-AI frameworks (Docling project; official documentation).

A practical pipeline is: collect files, convert them with Docling, inspect or transform the resulting content, then pass the representation your application needs to search, retrieval, or model components. Docling handles the document-conversion stage; you still decide how to split content, attach metadata, index it, and evaluate the answers your AI app produces.

How the common document model helps
Docling converts supported inputs into a common structured object called DoclingDocument. That gives application code a consistent starting point even when source files differ. The project documents the conversion result and document object in its DoclingDocument reference and lists export choices in its supported formats documentation.

Consistency does not mean every detail survives every conversion in the same way. Choose the representation according to what your next stage needs:
- Markdown or HTML: useful when a human-readable text-oriented export fits the next step.
- Lossless JSON: useful when downstream code needs structured data from the document model.
- Other documented exports: WebVTT, DocLang, and DocTags serve distinct output needs; they are not interchangeable with one another or with the richer document object.
Check how the chosen export represents the specific structures your application relies on before treating it as ready for indexing or prompting.

Why Docling’s PDF handling can matter
PDFs can encode columns, tables, and visual relationships that a plain text dump may flatten or scramble. Docling’s project materials list PDF capabilities including page layout analysis, reading-order recovery, table structure, code and formula handling, image classification, and OCR support for scanned PDFs and images (project overview; documentation).
These capabilities are reasons to evaluate Docling when a corpus includes scans, multi-column pages, or tables—not a guarantee that every page will be interpreted correctly. Test representative files, including difficult examples, and verify whether the extracted order, table cells, and OCR text are accurate enough for your use case. The 2024 technical report describes specialized models for layout analysis and table structure recognition and reports operation on commodity hardware within a small resource budget; that context is not a current benchmark or a promise about every configuration (2024 technical report).

Check source-format requirements before building around Docling
The current supported-format list spans PDF, modern and legacy Office files, OpenDocument, EPUB, Apple Pages and Keynote, and additional text, web, image, audio, and structured-document formats. Coverage and setup requirements vary by format: some require optional extras or an external dependency such as LibreOffice. Check the live supported-formats table for the exact inputs and outputs you plan to use rather than assuming every format works with identical processing.
That distinction matters for production planning. Confirm the required dependencies in the environment where conversion will run, then test documents that resemble your real files. A format appearing in a support list does not by itself establish extraction quality for your particular documents.

Ways to use Docling
The project offers a Python package and command-line interface, documents integrations with frameworks including LangChain, LlamaIndex, CrewAI, and Haystack, and provides a service option through docling-serve (repository and quickstart; documentation).

- CLI: try a batch or prototype workflow without first wiring conversion into application code.
- Framework integration: use a documented integration path when it fits the AI stack you already have.
- Service interface: evaluate docling-serve if an HTTP boundary suits your system design.
Docling also describes local execution for sensitive data and air-gapped environments. Whether local processing or a service deployment is appropriate depends on your own security, scaling, latency, and operational requirements; the available options do not remove the need to assess them.

Install and licensing details to verify
The repository quickstart gives pip install docling as the installation command and says Python 3.10 or higher is requested after Python 3.9 support was dropped in Docling 2.70.0. Because installation requirements can change, confirm the current installation instructions before setting up an environment. The repository lists macOS, Linux, and Windows support on x86_64 and arm64.
The codebase is identified as MIT-licensed in the repository. The repository separately advises checking the original licenses for individual models, so do not assume the code license alone settles the terms for every model used.
How to evaluate it for your app
Start with a small set of representative documents: ordinary files plus the cases most likely to break your workflow, such as scans, multi-column pages, dense tables, or mixed formats. Inspect the converted structure and the export your application will actually consume. If you are comparing parsers, use the same documents and check reading order, table cells, OCR on scans, preserved structure, format dependencies, deployment options, throughput, and operating cost. Those are evaluation criteria, not evidence that one parser wins without testing.
