Sharpen the shovel’s existing bevel on the soil-facing side; do not create a matching bevel on the back. If filing raises a small burr, a light pass on the back can remove it without turning that side into a second cutting edge.
Why a shovel usually has one sharpened side
A conventional shovel is designed with a beveled working edge. Sharpening that bevel maintains the edge’s shape; filing a second bevel on the opposite face changes it. UC ANR advises sharpening only the shovel’s inside edge and warns that sharpening both sides reduces effectiveness and stability: UC ANR’s shovel-sharpening guidance.
In practice, “both sides” can mean two different things. Removing a burr from the back with a light stroke is not the same as filing a second bevel there. Keep the back’s original face intact.
How to sharpen the working edge with a file
- Clean and secure the shovel. Remove dirt and clamp the blade firmly in a vise or with suitable clamps so it cannot shift.
- Identify the bevel. Match the file to the existing sloped face rather than choosing a new angle. Bevels vary among shovels. If the edge has no visible bevel, Kansas State and UConn extension guidance gives 45 degrees to the flat head as a starting reference, not a universal specification: Kansas State Research and Extension and UConn Extension.
- File in controlled strokes. Use a mill file and push it forward along the edge; ease pressure on the return stroke. Work evenly across the blade, following the bevel. Stop when the edge is clean and consistent rather than removing metal for a razor-sharp finish.
- Check for a burr. Turn the shovel over. If filing has left raised metal on the back, make a light pass to remove it. Do not keep filing until a second bevel forms.
For routine maintenance, hand filing gives more control over how much metal you remove. Avoid making the edge excessively thin: a thin edge can bend, and unnecessary filing shortens the blade’s useful life.

When a grinder may help
A grinder can restore a very dull or damaged edge more quickly, but it removes metal rapidly. Secure the shovel, wear eye and hearing protection, and avoid overheating or thinning the blade. Grinding can leave a rough edge, so refine it with a file afterward. For an ordinary dull edge, a file is the more controlled option.

UF/IFAS guidance uses wording that can sound like a recommendation to sharpen both sides. Read in isolation, “repeat on the other side” is ambiguous. More specific shovel guidance from UC ANR and other extension sources describes sharpening the beveled working side. If you turn the blade over, the appropriate finishing task is only to remove a burr—not to make a second bevel: UF/IFAS tool-care guidance.
