Do You Need to Rent Your Internet Provider’s Modem and Router?

Renting is not always necessary, but buying saves money only when your provider allows the device and removes a separate equipment fee. Check compatibility and support first.

Not necessarily. Renting is convenient and may be required for your service, but buying your own equipment can reduce costs when your provider allows it and removes a separate monthly rental fee. First check whether that fee exists, then confirm that the exact device works with your provider, plan, and internet technology.

Start with the charge on your plan and bill

Look at your current bill and the provider’s broadband label or plan disclosure. The Federal Communications Commission requires broadband labels to disclose recurring fees for renting or leasing modems and other network-connection equipment, as well as certain one-time equipment, activation, and installation charges. The key question is whether there is a distinct equipment charge you can actually eliminate. A provider may include equipment in a plan’s base price, so buying a device does not necessarily lower the bill. Check the total price and ask the provider whether returning its equipment would change what you pay.

Check that your connection can use customer-owned equipment

A modem is not a universal substitute for every provider’s equipment. Cable, fiber, DSL, fixed wireless, and satellite services can use different network hardware. In some fiber homes, the provider installs an optical network terminal (ONT) and the customer uses a separate router. A gateway combines modem and router functions, but the word “gateway” alone does not confirm compatibility.

NETGEAR Nighthawk DOCSIS 3.1 Modem Router Combo CAX30, WiFi 6, 2.7 Gbps | Multi-Gig, Reliable Performance, Guided Set Up, 4× Gig Ports, Xfinity/Spectrum/Cox Compatible, Dual-band, Free Expert Help
  • CABLE INTERNET AND WIFI MADE FOR YOUR HOME: This two-in-one cable modem and WiFi router puts every setting in your hands, from your WiFi names and passwords to how your network runs, so it works the way your household needs.
  • APPROVED FOR YOUR PROVIDER AND PLAN: Works with Xfinity internet plans up to 800Mbps, Spectrum up to 1Gbps, and Cox up to 1Gbps. Not compatible with Verizon, AT&T, CenturyLink, DirecTV, DISH, or bundled voice plans. ISP activation required after setup.
  • GET THE FULL SPEED OF YOUR PLAN: DOCSIS 3.1 supports Gigabit+ cable internet plans, so large downloads finish faster and 4K streaming, gaming, and video calls can all run at once. Actual speeds vary by plan and provider.
  • WIFI 6 COVERAGE FOR THE WHOLE HOME: Stay connected in every room with dual-band AX2700 WiFi 6 covering up to 2,000 sq ft and capacity for 25+ connected devices. Real-world coverage depends on home size, layout, and building materials.
  • WIRED CONNECTIONS FOR YOUR FASTEST DEVICES: Four Gigabit Ethernet ports keep gaming consoles, desktops, and streaming devices hardwired for the lowest latency and the most stable connection in your home.

Before buying, confirm the exact device against the provider’s current compatibility information and your plan. Check any speed-tier restrictions, address-specific requirements, and whether you need voice service through the provider. Ask which component—if any—you may replace, especially if your service uses an ONT or a provider-required gateway.

Compare the costs that apply to your household

There is no reliable standard payback period: the actual rental fee and purchase price vary, and the sources here do not establish representative current amounts. Calculate your own break-even point using the fee that will truly disappear, not an assumed equipment charge.

Factor Renting or using included equipment Buying your own
Total cost Check whether a separate monthly charge exists and whether returning equipment removes it. Compare the upfront price and likely owner-paid replacement or support costs with only the rental fee you will avoid.
Compatibility The provider supplies or specifies equipment for its service; verify plan terms and return requirements. Verify the exact model for your service technology, address, speed tier, and voice needs before purchase.
Support and replacement Ask what setup, maintenance, and replacement support the actual plan includes. Provider support may be limited; keep the manufacturer’s warranty information and be prepared to handle replacement.
Moving or changing plans Often simpler, subject to return rules and the equipment required for the new service. Your device may not work with a new address, provider, or plan.

As a simple comparison, multiply the monthly fee you can remove by the number of months you expect to keep the service. Compare that total with the device’s purchase cost plus any replacement or support costs you expect to pay yourself. If there is no removable fee, the financial case for buying is different; convenience, equipment features, and ownership preferences may matter more.

Renting and buying both come with trade-offs

Renting or using included equipment may suit you if

  • Your provider requires its equipment for your chosen service or plan.
  • You are unsure which customer-owned devices are approved for your address or speed tier.
  • The equipment is included in the plan price and there is no separate fee to remove.
  • You value provider setup, maintenance, or replacement support, and your plan’s terms provide it.

Buying may suit you if

  • Your provider permits customer-owned equipment and confirms the exact model is compatible.
  • A separate monthly rental fee will be removed when you return the provider’s device.
  • You are comfortable arranging setup and handling warranty claims or replacement if needed.
  • You expect to stay on a compatible service long enough for the avoided fee to outweigh your ownership costs.

Provider policies differ

These U.S. examples illustrate why you should check the policy for your own provider, address, and plan; they do not establish a rule for every ISP.

Those policies are provider-specific. Do not assume every ISP must accept every retail modem or that a listed model will work with every plan.

Questions to ask before you decide

  1. What internet technology does this address use: cable, fiber, DSL, fixed wireless, or satellite?
  2. Is equipment included in the plan price, or is there a separate monthly rental or lease charge?
  3. If I return the provider’s device, exactly how will my monthly bill change?
  4. Does the provider approve this exact modem, router, or gateway for my address and speed tier?
  5. Do I need provider equipment for phone service, an ONT, or another plan requirement?
  6. What setup, support, repair, and replacement help applies to rented equipment versus my own?

If you have cable internet and have verified your provider’s requirements, a DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem is a relevant category to investigate—not a universal recommendation. Check the exact model with the provider before purchasing; cable modems are not substitutes for equipment used with fiber, DSL, fixed wireless, or satellite.
