In the United States, whether you need to register a drone depends on its weight and how you use it. A drone weighing 0.55 pounds (250 grams) or less is exempt when flown exclusively for recreation under the FAA’s Exception for Limited Recreational Operations. Heavier recreational drones generally must be registered, and drones used for work or other non-recreational purposes follow a different FAA framework, typically Part 107. Registration is only one requirement: recreational flyers also need to pass TRUST, check airspace, and meet Remote ID rules where applicable.
Do you need to register a drone in the United States?
The FAA’s registration rules distinguish recreational flying from non-recreational operations. For recreation, the exemption applies only if the aircraft weighs 0.55 pounds (250 grams) or less and is flown exclusively under the recreational exception. If it weighs more, register it. If you fly for work or another non-recreational purpose, the recreational weight exemption does not apply; the FAA says those operations generally use the Part 107 framework.

The FAA lists a $5 fee and a three-year registration term for both recreational and Part 107 registration. Recreational registration covers the registrant’s listed drone inventory; Part 107 registration is per drone. A registration cannot be transferred between operation types. See the FAA’s drone registration guidance and getting-started guidance.

| How you fly | Weight | Registration rule |
|---|---|---|
| Exclusively recreational under the FAA exception | 0.55 pounds (250 grams) or less | Exempt from registration |
| Exclusively recreational under the FAA exception | More than 0.55 pounds (250 grams) | Register through the recreational process; one registration covers the registrant’s listed inventory |
| Commercial, government, or another non-recreational purpose | Any weight | Follow the applicable non-recreational framework, typically Part 107, and register each drone under Part 107 |
The registration details and fee above are from the FAA’s page last updated March 18, 2024. The recreational exemption is tied to both the weight threshold and use; a light drone does not remain exempt for a flight that is not exclusively recreational.

How do you register a drone?
- Open the FAA’s How to Register Your Drone page and use FAA DroneZone.
- Choose the registration path that matches the operation: recreational inventory registration or Part 107 registration for non-recreational use.
- Pay the FAA-listed $5 fee. Recreational registration covers the registrant’s listed inventory; Part 107 registration is per drone.
- Put the registration number on the aircraft before flying if the drone must be registered.
- Keep the registration certificate with you in paper or digital form while flying, and show it to law enforcement if asked.
Do you need a license to fly a drone recreationally?
Recreational flyers do not use the Part 107 remote pilot certificate for flights that meet the FAA’s recreational exception, but they must pass the free Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST) before flying under that exception. The FAA says approved administrators offer TRUST free; the questions can be corrected until all are answered correctly. Save, print, or download the certificate because the administrator does not retain it for you, and a lost certificate means taking the test again. The FAA’s TRUST guidance was last updated August 21, 2026.
TRUST is not a substitute for registration when registration is required, nor does it authorize work or other non-recreational flights. Those operations typically follow Part 107 and its remote pilot certification requirements.

Does a registered drone need Remote ID?
Yes, if the drone is required to be registered or is registered, it must comply with the FAA’s Remote ID rule. Registration and Remote ID are separate checks: completing one does not automatically satisfy the other. The FAA describes two equipment paths: a drone with Standard Remote ID, or a drone using a broadcast module when the applicable device is listed in the FAA inventory. Follow the FAA’s Remote Identification guidance and confirm the correct Remote ID serial number; it can differ from the aircraft’s ordinary serial number.
A drone may also operate without Remote ID equipment inside an FAA-Recognized Identification Area (FRIA), but only while both pilot and aircraft remain within the FRIA boundaries and the pilot maintains visual line of sight. A FRIA does not waive other airspace restrictions. Details are on the FAA’s FRIA page, last updated August 7, 2024.

Can you fly anywhere after registering?
No. Registration does not grant permission to fly in every location. The pilot is responsible for checking airspace and other restrictions before each flight. The FAA’s B4UFLY service shows where recreational flyers can and cannot fly; consult the FAA’s Where Can I Fly? page for location guidance.
Recreational flights in controlled airspace require prior FAA authorization through LAANC or DroneZone. For LAANC, provide the date, time, location, and altitude, and stay within the applicable UAS Facility Map limits. Check the FAA’s airspace authorization instructions before planning a flight.

What if you are visiting the United States with a drone?
The rules above describe U.S. federal FAA requirements. The FAA has separate guidance for foreign visitors; depending on the drone’s registration and Remote ID status, a visitor may need to submit a Notice of Identification or may be limited to operating within an FAA-Recognized Identification Area. See Information for International UAS Operators in the United States. State, local, tribal, and territorial restrictions may also affect where a drone can be flown, so check requirements for the specific location.
