No—not automatically. Google recommends deleting and enrolling your fingerprint again if scanning becomes unreliable after you install or change a screen protector. If the sensor still works normally, you do not need to re-register just because a protector was added.
What to do after installing a screen protector
For the best chance of reliable scanning, set up the protector before enrolling Fingerprint Unlock when possible. Google recommends using a Made for Google certified protector for your exact Pixel model, then scanning the QR code on its packaging after installation and before fingerprint setup. The code must match the phone model and protector size to save the protector information and optimize the fingerprint experience. Google’s screen protector guidance explains the process.

Google says the sensor needs time to recalibrate after a protector is applied. Scanning may improve over the first few hours or days, though even a certified protector can perform worse than using the display without one.
When to delete and enroll your fingerprint again
If scans remain unreliable after installation, re-enrollment is a troubleshooting step—not a routine requirement. On supported Pixel phones, open Settings > Security & privacy > Device unlock > Fingerprint & Face Unlock, delete the existing fingerprint, then add it again by following the on-screen instructions. Menu names may vary by model or Android version. Google’s fingerprint sensor troubleshooting guide recommends this when a protector was added after enrollment or recently changed.

If the fingerprint sensor still struggles
Before replacing the protector, check these other factors Google identifies:
- Install the latest Android update available for your phone.
- Clean the display and check the protector for debris, bubbles or poor fit.
- Use the same finger you enrolled, and press firmly until the phone unlocks.
- If touch response is the issue, check Screen protector mode in display settings. It increases touch sensitivity; it is separate from fingerprint enrollment. See Google’s display settings instructions.

Google’s cited under-display fingerprint troubleshooting steps cover Pixel 6 and later, excluding Pixel Fold. Pixel Fold has a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, so follow its model-specific guidance rather than assuming under-display instructions apply.

Will a certified protector guarantee the same performance?
No. Certification means Google tests the protector for compatibility, but Google cautions that protectors can interfere with the fingerprint sensor and that performance may be worse than without a protector. No fingerprint success-rate figure is stated in the cited support material, so there is no supported percentage to expect.
