No. Based on Rockstar’s published GTA VI story and character information, you should be able to start with GTA VI without playing earlier Grand Theft Auto games. That is a conclusion from what Rockstar has announced—not an explicit promise that the game contains no returning characters, references or events from earlier entries.
Is GTA V required before GTA VI?
No requirement to play GTA V appears in Rockstar’s published GTA VI materials. The announced story follows Jason and Lucia as they become caught in a criminal conspiracy across the state of Leonida after an easy score goes wrong. Rockstar’s character descriptions provide background for the new leads, but do not tell players they need to know GTA V’s story.

Rockstar has not explicitly guaranteed that GTA VI will have no connections to older games. A reference or returning character could still appear; the available information simply does not establish prior play as a prerequisite.

There is no announced play order or older plot players are told to learn first. Lucia’s profile mentions her mother’s dreams dating back to their days in Liberty City, but that background detail does not state that players need to play GTA III or GTA IV to understand GTA VI.

Rockstar has previously said that one GTA IV episode could be played without essential knowledge of another. In its 2009 Episodes from Liberty City FAQ, the company answered a question about playing The Ballad of Gay Tony after The Lost and Damned: “No. While it’s great to have knowledge of Episode 1’s story to get the most out of the revelations in Episode 2, it’s not essential. You can download and play The Ballad of Gay Tony on its own.” That answer applies to those GTA IV episodes, not GTA VI, so it is historical context rather than confirmation of how GTA VI handles continuity. Should you play an older game anyway?
Only if you want to. An older game can offer more time in the series’ world or a refresher on its style, but Rockstar has not identified one as preparation for a specific GTA VI plot point.

For a recent-series refresher
GTA V Story Mode is a reasonable optional choice if you want to revisit a recent mainline entry. Rockstar Support describes Story Mode as a distinct part of GTA V and explains how access relates to GTA Online on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. That support guidance is platform-specific; check current availability and store details for your own system before making a purchase. It does not say that GTA V is needed to follow GTA VI.
