No—you can play Alan Wake 2 without playing the original. Remedy describes the sequel as a standalone experience for newcomers. The first game is optional background: it helps you recognize Alan’s history, returning characters and story connections, but it is not required to follow the sequel.
What the original adds to Alan Wake 2
In the first Alan Wake, writer Alan Wake visits Bright Falls with his wife, Alice. A supernatural force called the Dark Presence takes her, and Alan discovers that the horror story he writes can affect reality. He fights the Taken with light, writes an ending that defeats the Dark Presence and rescues Alice, but becomes trapped in the Dark Place.

Alan Wake 2 continues that story through two journeys. FBI profiler Saga Anderson investigates ritualistic murders in Bright Falls, while Alan tries to escape the nightmare reality. Knowing the first game gives more context to Alan’s situation and helps returning players spot lore and connections. Remedy says that background is not necessary to understand or enjoy the sequel.

If you want to play the original first
Alan Wake Remastered is an option. Remedy says it includes the original game and its The Signal and The Writer expansions. Playing it is entirely optional; it simply offers more of the story before you move on to the sequel. Remedy’s remaster page has details.
