Usually, no. A supported Ubuntu installation normally already includes a working Python 3 interpreter as the python3 package. Check it before installing anything. You may still need an optional package for pip, virtual environments, or the complete standard library, and you may need a separate version manager when a project requires a Python release that is not Ubuntu’s default.

What Ubuntu installs by default
Ubuntu treats Python 3 as part of the operating system rather than as an application that every user must add later. The official Ubuntu setup guidance says the python3 package is part of the default system installation and depends on the current default Python 3 series for that Ubuntu release.

That interpreter is used by Ubuntu’s own tooling. Canonical’s documentation gives an explicit warning: Do not remove the default system installation of Python (the
In other words, installing a second interpreter for a project is a different task from replacing or deleting Ubuntu’s system Python.python3 package), as that would break system tooling.
The upstream Python documentation also describes Python as preinstalled on most Linux distributions. A normal, supported Ubuntu desktop or server therefore does not require a first-time, manual Python installation. The sensible first action is to inspect the interpreter that is already there.

Check whether Python 3 is already available
Open a terminal and run both commands:
python3 --version
command -v python3
How to read the result
- If the first command prints a version such as
Python 3.12.xorPython 3.10.x, an interpreter is installed and executable. - The second command prints the path selected by your shell, confirming that
python3resolves to a real executable. - The patch component can change through ordinary Ubuntu updates, so do not treat the exact three-part version as permanent.
Use python3, not the unqualified python, in commands and scripts intended for Ubuntu. The documented Ubuntu package and the system command are named python3; a missing python command does not prove that Python 3 is absent.
These checks answer two different questions. python3 --version tells you what the executable reports, while command -v python3 shows which executable your shell will launch. If the path is unexpected, you may be using a user-installed interpreter or a version manager rather than Ubuntu’s packaged one. That is useful information to establish before creating environments or troubleshooting package errors.
When the command is genuinely missing
A missing python3 command is possible on a custom or minimal image, after damage to the package installation, or on a nonstandard Ubuntu-derived environment. In that case, install Ubuntu’s package from the repositories configured for that machine:
sudo apt install python3
If the package manager cannot find it, the issue is repository configuration or package-manager health rather than a reason to download an unrelated installer. Resolve the Ubuntu package-source or system error first, then install the distribution package.
After installation, run both checks again. This confirms that the package is available to your shell before you add optional components. It also gives you a clean baseline for deciding whether the next requirement is the full runtime, package-management tools, or project isolation.
Which Python version does Ubuntu provide?
The default series depends on the Ubuntu release. Ubuntu’s current availability table, checked in 2026, lists the following defaults:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
| Ubuntu release | Default Python series listed by Ubuntu | What the entry means |
|---|---|---|
| Ubuntu 24.04 LTS | Python 3.12 | Canonical/Ubuntu default shown in the current table; patch releases can change with updates. |
| Ubuntu 22.04 LTS | Python 3.10 | Canonical/Ubuntu default shown in the current table; patch releases can change with updates. |
The table identifies the release’s default Python series, not a promise that every machine has the same patch number forever. Security and maintenance updates can move a system from one patch level to another while keeping the same series. A project that requires “Python 3.12” is asking for a series; a project that requires one exact patch build needs a separately managed environment and should not be achieved by changing Ubuntu’s system interpreter.
This distinction matters when reading a project’s installation instructions. If the requirement is satisfied by the release’s series, the packaged interpreter is usually the least disruptive choice. If the requirement says that several series must coexist, or names a series Ubuntu does not provide as its default, that is a version-management problem rather than proof that the original installation was incomplete.
Choose the smallest additional package you need
Having python3 available does not mean every development component is installed. Ubuntu separates the base interpreter from optional tooling. Install only the capability your workflow lacks.
| Need | Package or command | What it adds |
|---|---|---|
| Basic Python 3 interpreter | python3 |
The distribution’s system interpreter and the default Python 3 series for that Ubuntu release. |
| Complete runtime and standard components | sudo apt install python3-full |
Ubuntu describes this as the complete class library, virtual-environment support, and the basic Python IDE, IDLE. |
| Python package manager | sudo apt install python3-pip |
The pip tooling used in development workflows; Ubuntu documents it separately from the base interpreter. |
| Virtual-environment module | sudo apt install python3-venv |
The venv module for Ubuntu’s default Python 3 version. Ubuntu lists this package for the 22.04 and 24.04 suites. |
These packages solve different problems. Installing python3-full is not a prerequisite for every script. Installing python3-pip does not by itself create an isolated project environment. Installing python3-venv supplies the module needed by python3 -m venv, but it does not select an alternate Python series.

Why python3 works when pip does not
The base interpreter and the package manager are separate Ubuntu packages. It is therefore normal for this command to succeed:
python3 --version
while a direct pip command is unavailable. Add the documented package when your workflow needs it:
sudo apt install python3-pip
For reproducible project work, invoke pip through the interpreter that owns it, for example python3 -m pip, or through the interpreter inside an activated virtual environment. This avoids accidentally using a pip belonging to a different Python installation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Do not interpret a missing pip executable as evidence that Python itself must be installed manually. It indicates a missing development component, not a missing runtime. Likewise, installing pip does not automatically make packages safe to place in the operating system’s interpreter; isolation is a separate decision.
Create an isolated environment for a project
For most application and library development, the recommended solution is to keep Ubuntu’s interpreter in place and create a project-local environment. The basic workflow is:
- Change to the project directory.
- Create an environment named
.venvwithpython3 -m venv .venv. - Activate it with
source .venv/bin/activate. - Run
which python3and confirm that the path points inside the project’s.venvdirectory.
python3 -m venv .venv
source .venv/bin/activate
which python3
When activation succeeds, commands such as python, python3, and package-install commands resolve to the environment’s interpreter for that shell session. The environment can carry project-specific packages without placing those packages into Ubuntu’s system Python.
Activation affects the current shell, so a new terminal may require activation again. The environment directory belongs to the project and can be removed and recreated without uninstalling Ubuntu’s Python. This makes it safer to experiment with dependencies and easier to keep separate projects from influencing one another.
If creating the environment fails
If python3 -m venv .venv reports that the venv module is unavailable, install the matching Ubuntu package:
sudo apt install python3-venv
Then run the environment-creation command again. Ubuntu’s package index describes python3-venv as the venv module for the default Python 3 version, including the Ubuntu 22.04 and 24.04 suites.
Using the package that matches Ubuntu’s default series is important. The package supplies the module for that distribution-managed interpreter; it is not a general installer for every Python version you might later add through a version manager.
Why Ubuntu may reject a global pip install
Ubuntu’s tutorial warns that installing a Python package with pip outside a virtual environment on an Ubuntu or Debian system can produce an externally managed environment
message. That warning reflects a deliberate separation: Ubuntu manages its system Python with distribution packages, while pip-managed project dependencies belong in an isolated environment.

When an appropriate Debian or Ubuntu package exists, use the corresponding apt install python3-xyz package. For a dependency that is not packaged by Ubuntu, create and activate a virtual environment, then install the dependency there. The environment is the boundary that keeps project changes separate from operating-system tooling.
When manual or alternate-version installation is justified
Manual installation is not the default answer, but it is reasonable in specific cases:
- A project requires a Python series that is not the default for your Ubuntu release.
- You must maintain more than one Python series on the same machine.
- You deliberately want an interpreter managed independently of Ubuntu’s package lifecycle.
Ubuntu documents pyenv as an option for selecting multiple Python versions. It can compile requested versions locally, provided the required build dependencies are available. A version manager is useful when a project’s version constraint cannot be met by Ubuntu’s default interpreter, but it should be used alongside—not as a replacement for—the system python3.
Compilation through a version manager is a larger undertaking than installing an Ubuntu package: the requested version is built locally, and the build dependencies must be present. That effort is justified by a real version requirement, not simply by seeing that pip or venv is missing. Start with the release’s packaged Python, then move to a version manager only when the project requirement remains unmet.

A safe alternate-version layout
- Leave Ubuntu’s default
python3package installed for operating-system tools. - Install and configure the version manager for your user account.
- Install the project’s required Python series through that manager.
- Create a project-specific virtual environment using the selected interpreter.
- Configure the project or shell to use that environment rather than changing Ubuntu’s system command.
This arrangement separates three concerns: Ubuntu’s own scripts, the selected interpreter version, and the project’s third-party packages. It also makes it possible for two projects with different version requirements to coexist.
Decide between Ubuntu packages, a virtual environment, and a version manager
| Your situation | Preferred choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
python3 --version works and you only need to run a script |
Use the existing python3 |
No additional interpreter installation is required. |
| You need Ubuntu-packaged modules or the complete standard components | Install the relevant apt package, such as python3-full |
Distribution packages integrate with Ubuntu’s package management. |
| You need project-specific third-party packages | Install python3-venv if necessary, then create .venv |
Dependencies remain isolated from the system interpreter. |
| You need pip but not an alternate Python series | Install python3-pip, preferably use it inside a virtual environment |
The package manager is added without replacing Python. |
| A project requires a nondefault series or several series | Use pyenv or another deliberate version-management approach, then isolate each project |
Version selection stays project-specific while Ubuntu’s default remains available. |
The practical dividing line is scope. Apt changes the machine’s distribution-managed components. A virtual environment changes one project’s package set. A version manager selects which interpreter a user or project invokes. Keeping those scopes distinct reduces conflicts and avoids making an application requirement an operating-system change.
Common situations and the right response
“I installed Ubuntu and expected the python command.”
Check python3 --version instead. Ubuntu’s documented system package and commands use the Python 3 name. A missing unqualified python command does not establish that Python 3 is missing.
“The interpreter exists, but my package installation fails.”
First determine whether the failure is caused by missing pip or by Ubuntu’s externally managed-environment protection. Install python3-pip if pip is absent. If Ubuntu reports an externally managed environment, create a .venv and install the project dependency there rather than forcing packages into the system interpreter.

“My project requires a newer or older Python than Ubuntu provides.”
Confirm the Ubuntu release and its default series, then use a version manager when the requirement genuinely differs. Keep the alternate interpreter and its environments project-local. Do not attempt to satisfy a project constraint by deleting or replacing Ubuntu’s system package.
“A minimal image has no Python command at all.”
Install python3 from the image’s configured Ubuntu repositories. After installation, rerun python3 --version and command -v python3 before deciding whether optional packages are needed.

“Should I install every Python package up front?”
No. A working interpreter is sufficient for ordinary script execution. Add python3-full, python3-pip, or python3-venv in response to a specific need. This keeps the machine’s package set understandable and avoids confusing a missing optional module with a missing Python installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors“Can I replace Ubuntu’s default Python with the version my application wants?”
Do not replace or remove the distribution-managed interpreter. Canonical warns that removing the python3 package can break system tooling. Use a version manager and a project-specific environment so the application can select its own interpreter without changing the command Ubuntu relies on.
A practical setup sequence
For a new Ubuntu machine, this sequence avoids unnecessary changes:
- Run
python3 --versionandcommand -v python3. - If both commands succeed, keep the existing interpreter and identify the project’s actual requirement.
- If the command is absent, install
python3with apt. - If you need the complete runtime and IDLE, install
python3-full. - If you need package installation, add
python3-pip. - If you need isolation, add
python3-venvwhen necessary and create.venv. - If the project demands a nondefault or multiple Python series, use
pyenvor another version manager and create an environment from the selected interpreter.
At each stage, add only the component that addresses the observed requirement. A working python3 command is already a successful Python installation for ordinary script execution.
Keep the checks in the same order when troubleshooting. First establish that an interpreter exists, then identify its series, then add the missing capability. This prevents a common escalation in which a user responds to a missing pip command by installing a second Python and creates a harder-to-understand mixture of interpreters and package managers.

Frequently asked questions
Is Python already installed on Ubuntu?
Usually. Supported Ubuntu installations include the python3 package, and upstream Python documentation says Python comes preinstalled on most Linux distributions. Verify the specific machine with python3 --version.
How do I check which Python Ubuntu is using?
Run python3 --version for the reported version and command -v python3 for the executable path. Together they show both the series and the command selected by your shell.
Why is pip missing if Python works?
Ubuntu packages the interpreter and pip separately. Install python3-pip if your workflow needs pip, and prefer using it through the interpreter or inside a virtual environment.
Do I need python3-venv?
You need it when python3 -m venv .venv reports that the venv module is unavailable. Install python3-venv for the default Python 3 version, then create the environment again.

No. Ubuntu describes python3-full as the complete class library, virtual-environment support, and IDLE. Install it when you need those complete components; a simple script may run with the base python3 package.
Can I safely remove the system Python after installing another one?
No. Canonical specifically warns not to remove the default python3 package because system tooling depends on it. Keep alternate interpreters separate and project-specific.
Bottom line for Ubuntu users
You normally do not need to install Python manually on Ubuntu.
