Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor most people using a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC at home, the built-in Windows Security app provides antivirus protection without a paid subscription. Paying can make sense when a particular feature or multi-device need is important to you, but the evidence here does not show that every home user needs paid antivirus—or that paid products are always stronger.
What free protection already includes on Windows
Windows 10 and Windows 11 include the Windows Security app. It brings together Microsoft Defender Antivirus, which provides real-time malware protection, and Windows Firewall. Microsoft describes Windows Security as built into Windows and able to detect, prevent, and remove malware with cloud-delivered protection.

To check your PC, open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security on Windows 10, or Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security on Windows 11, then select Open Windows Security. Review the protection areas and their status in the app. If a warning appears, open the relevant area and follow its recommended action.
Recommended Free Tools
This is a Windows home-user answer, not a universal recommendation for every device. The built-in protection described here applies to Windows 10 and 11; it does not establish what is included or appropriate for a Mac, phone, or work-managed computer.

How strong is Microsoft Defender?
Independent test results show that Microsoft Defender can perform well, though a test score is evidence about a particular product version, platform, period, and methodology—not a guarantee of protection in every situation.
In AV-TEST’s January–February 2026 Windows 11 consumer test, Microsoft Defender Antivirus Consumer 4.18, tested on Windows 11 Professional 64-bit, detected 99.7% of zero-day real-world malware in January and 100% in February. It detected 100% of prevalent malware in both months. Its scores were 6.0/6 for protection, 6.0/6 for performance, and 6.0/6 for usability. See AV-TEST’s Defender report and test details.
AV-TEST says its home-user evaluations use current publicly available product versions, default settings, realistic threat scenarios, and protection, performance, and usability criteria. Results can vary by test cycle and product version; they should not be read as a permanent ranking or as proof that every paid product performs worse. AV-TEST’s home-user test information explains its evaluation context.
When paying for antivirus may make sense
A paid subscription is a choice to meet a specific need, not a requirement for basic Windows antivirus protection. Before buying, identify the feature or coverage gap you want the subscription to address. If you cannot name one, the built-in Windows protection may be enough for your needs.
- You need coverage across several kinds of devices. Check that the plan explicitly supports your operating systems and covers the number of devices you use; a Windows product is not automatically suitable for every device.
- You want a particular extra feature. Confirm that the product currently includes the feature you want, and that it works on your devices. Do not assume a label such as “security suite” means a specific tool is included.
- You are comparing products. Look for independent test results for the relevant platform and period, and consider performance impact and false positives alongside protection scores.
- You are assessing the real cost. Check renewal and cancellation terms as well as ongoing cost. Prices and plan terms vary, and no current vendor prices or terms are established here.
These checks help you compare a paid suite against your actual need without assuming that more features automatically mean better protection.

Why you should not casually install two real-time antivirus apps
Microsoft says that when a third-party antivirus app is installed and turned on, Microsoft Defender Antivirus turns off; Defender turns back on if that other app is removed. Microsoft also warns that running multiple antimalware apps at the same time can slow or destabilize a computer. Microsoft’s Windows Security guidance describes this behavior.
If you choose a third-party antivirus, check Windows Security afterward to confirm which provider is active. Avoid installing another real-time antivirus simply to “double up” unless its vendor and Microsoft clearly explain how the products are meant to work together.
What antivirus cannot replace
Whether you pay or not, keep Windows and your other software current, and treat unexpected links and attachments cautiously. Microsoft recommends keeping antivirus and software updated and avoiding suspicious links and attachments. A subscription does not remove the need for those precautions. Microsoft’s home-computer security guidance covers these habits.
“Microsoft Defender” can mean two different products
Microsoft Defender Antivirus is the antivirus component built into Windows Security. Separately, the Microsoft Defender app works across Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS and is included with Microsoft 365 Personal or Family. The cross-platform app is distinct from the built-in Windows antivirus; the name alone does not tell you which product or coverage you have. Microsoft explains the Defender app and its availability.
