No—not everyone needs noise-cancelling headphones. They are useful when you listen in noisy places and want to hear audio without raising the volume as much. But active noise cancellation (ANC) is not a substitute for hearing protection: ordinary consumer headphones should not be treated as protection from hazardous noise unless they are labeled with a Noise Reduction Rating (NRR).
When noise-cancelling headphones are worth it
ANC headphones can reduce the noise you perceive from your surroundings, which may make listening more comfortable in places such as a busy commute or a noisy room. The practical benefit is that you may not feel the need to turn up your music to compete with the background sound. The World Health Organization recommends well-fitted noise-cancelling headphones as one way to avoid increasing listening volume in noisy environments.

Consider them if background noise regularly makes it hard to listen at a comfortable volume. If you mostly listen in quiet places, or you can already keep playback low and hear it clearly, ANC may offer little hearing-related benefit. Comfort and a fit that works in your usual environment matter more than the presence of the ANC label alone.

ANC uses electronics to reduce noise; it does not make loud playback safe. As CDC/NIOSH explains: “A process called active noise cancellation reduces noise by using electronics to cancel noise out.” It also cautions: “This technology can be added to headphones or earbuds which will cancel noise but should not be considered hearing protection unless labeled with an NRR.”
#1 Best Overall
- Hybrid Active Noise Cancelling: 2 internal and 2 external mics work in tandem to detect external noise and effectively reduce up to 90% of it, no matter in trains or offices.
- Immerse Yourself in Detailed Audio: The noise cancelling headphones have oversized 40mm dynamic drivers that produce detailed sound and thumping beats with BassUp technology for your every travel, commuting and gaming. Compatible with Hi-Res certified audio via the AUX cable for more detail.
- 40-Hour Long Battery Life and Fast Charging: With 40 hours of battery life with ANC on and 60 hours in normal mode, you can commute in peace with your Bluetooth headphones without thinking about recharging. Fast charge for 5 mins to get an extra 4 hours of music listening for daily users.
- Dual-Connections: Connect to two devices simultaneously with Bluetooth 5.0 and instantly switch between them. Whether you're working on your laptop, or need to take a phone call, audio from your Bluetooth headphones will automatically play from the device you need to hear from.
- App for EQ Customization: Download the soundcore app to tailor your sound using the customizable EQ, with 22 presets, or adjust it yourself. You can also switch between 3 modes: ANC, Normal, and Transparency, and relax with white noise.
That distinction matters. ANC may help you listen at a lower volume, but it does not establish that the headphones provide a specified level of protection from hazardous sound. If you need protection from loud noise, use hearing protectors appropriate to the exposure, such as rated earplugs or earmuffs. CDC advises avoiding loud situations where possible and using adequate hearing protection when loud noise cannot be avoided.
How to listen more safely
- Keep the volume down. WHO advises keeping device volume below 60% of its maximum.
- Pay attention to total exposure. Hearing risk depends on both sound level and how long you listen. WHO gives examples of 80 dB for up to 40 hours per week and 90 dB for four hours per week. These are exposure examples, not guarantees of safety for every listener.
- Use monitoring or limits when available. A device’s exposure monitoring or volume-limiting features can help you notice when listening levels are high.
- Take breaks. Give your ears time away from sound, especially during long listening sessions.
WHO’s published figures are examples for listening exposure, not a single universal threshold that makes every situation safe. NIOSH’s often-cited 85 dB(A) recommended exposure limit is for occupational noise; NIOSH says it is not designed to cover every recreational or environmental exposure.

- Two Devices, Zero Hassle: Stay connected to your laptop and phone at the same time. Audio switches automatically to whichever device needs you — so a call never interrupts your flow, and getting back to your playlist is just as easy. Designed for commuters and remote workers who move smoothly between work and personal listening throughout the day.
- Your Sound, Your Rules: The soundcore app puts everything at your fingertips — dials your ideal EQ with presets or build your own, flip between ANC, Normal, and Transparency modes on the fly, or wind down with built-in white noise. One app, total control.
ANC headphones versus hearing protectors
| What you need | What to use | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| More comfortable listening amid ordinary background noise | Well-fitted ANC headphones may help reduce the urge to raise playback volume. | Comfort, fit in your typical setting, and whether you can keep playback low. Exposure monitoring or volume limiting may also be useful. |
| Protection from hazardous noise | Appropriate hearing protectors, such as earplugs or earmuffs. | Use a product labeled with an NRR and consider the noise exposure, fit, comfort, compatibility with other safety equipment, convenience, communication needs, and cost. Workplace fit testing can help establish whether protection is adequate. |
Do not use consumer ANC specifications as a substitute for an NRR or for protection selected for a particular noise exposure. ANC headphones are a listening tool; rated hearing protectors are the relevant option when the goal is reducing hazardous-noise exposure.

How to decide what you need
- If you want easier listening in noisy places: ANC may be worthwhile if it helps you keep the playback volume lower and the headphones fit comfortably.
- If you listen mainly in quiet places: You may not need ANC. Focus instead on keeping volume moderate, monitoring exposure where possible, and taking breaks.
- If you need protection from loud or hazardous noise: Choose appropriate rated earplugs or earmuffs, not ordinary ANC headphones. For workplace use, selection should account for exposure, fit, other protective equipment, and communication needs.
