No—RetroPie does not need BIOS files for every game. Whether a file is needed depends on the system you are emulating and the emulator or core RetroPie uses to run it. Check the current instructions for that system and emulator before adding files; there is no single BIOS file or folder rule that applies to every setup.
Do you need a BIOS for every RetroPie game?
No. BIOS requirements are specific to an emulated system and its selected emulator or core, not a RetroPie-wide setting. Some combinations may require a BIOS, others may mark one as optional, and some may not require one. Check the system’s current RetroPie documentation and the emulator’s requirements rather than relying on a universal list.

For example, discussions about PlayStation 1, Amiga, and TI-99 emulation show that requirements and file lookup behavior can differ. Those historical forum threads are useful illustrations, not current specifications: PlayStation 1 BIOS discussion, Amiga Kickstart troubleshooting, and TI-99 system ROM path troubleshooting.

- Identify the system. Determine which console or computer the game is for.
- Identify the emulator or core RetroPie launches. BIOS requirements can vary with that choice, so do not stop at the system name.
- Check the current RetroPie page for that system. Look for whether a BIOS is required, optional, or not listed, and note its exact filename and destination instructions. The relevant official pages include RetroPie’s BIOS documentation and its PlayStation 1 documentation.
- Check the emulator’s own documentation if RetroPie’s page does not resolve a filename, path, or emulator-specific detail.
- Use the instructions for that exact combination. If you already have the required file lawfully, follow the specified spelling, capitalization, and location rather than copying a general-purpose BIOS-pack list.
Where do you put a BIOS file?
A BIOS directory is used in common RetroPie configurations, but its exact location and any system-specific subdirectory can depend on the setup and emulator. A community discussion of a RetroPie update refers to /home/pi/RetroPie/BIOS, while an Amiga troubleshooting thread discusses an amiga subdirectory. These are examples, not universal current defaults. Confirm the destination on the current system and emulator documentation before copying a file.

BIOS storage and game ROM storage are distinct. An older discussion of USB migration describes that distinction in a particular configuration; its paths and behavior should not be treated as current instructions for every RetroPie version or USB setup. See the RetroPie community’s 4.3-to-4.4 discussion for that historical context.
What to check if the emulator cannot find the BIOS
If a game fails to launch or the emulator reports that it cannot locate a system ROM, check the configuration before assuming the game image is at fault:

- Confirm that RetroPie is launching the emulator or core whose requirements you checked.
- Compare the filename and letter case with the system-specific instructions.
- Verify that the file is in the stated directory, including any required system subfolder.
- Inspect the emulator or runcommand log for the missing-file message. The exact log workflow differs, so use the instructions for your selected emulator.
Path and naming problems appear in historical community troubleshooting, including the TI-99 example above. Its folder guidance applies to that case, not to all systems.
Can you download BIOS files or copy them from a device?
Do not use unauthorized BIOS or game-ROM download sources. RetroPie’s community discussion on acquiring content includes moderator direction to its rules, which prohibit requests for or sharing of ROMs: community discussion of acquiring content for RetroPie.

Whether you may make or use a personal firmware backup depends on the law that applies to you and any relevant rights-holder permissions. The available guidance does not establish one copying method as lawful everywhere, so check local rules rather than assuming that ownership of a console automatically authorizes every method of extracting or using its firmware.
