Apple headphones—and certain Beats models—are only needed for specific Apple headphone features such as its Spatial Audio controls, head tracking, and Personalized Spatial Audio.
What “Spatial Audio” means in Apple Music
The name can refer to related but distinct things. Apple Music offers songs mixed in Dolby Atmos. Separately, Apple provides headphone-specific Spatial Audio controls, including fixed spatialization and head tracking on supported devices. Personalized Spatial Audio adds a profile tailored to the listener. Being able to play an Atmos mix does not mean a headphone supports Apple’s separate controls or tracking.

Can non-Apple headphones play Dolby Atmos?
Yes. On iPhone, go to Settings > Apps > Music > Dolby Atmos and choose Always On. Apple says the Music app will attempt Dolby Atmos playback on any connected headphones or speakers. Atmos tracks display a Dolby icon. Apple’s iPhone guide puts the distinction plainly: “Dolby Atmos will play on any headphones, but not all speakers will play Dolby Atmos as intended.” Apple’s Dolby Atmos instructions also note that Apple Music and Dolby Atmos availability varies by country or region.
When Automatic is selected
Automatic is more restrictive than Always On: Apple says it plays Atmos when the iPhone is connected to compatible headphones, such as AirPods 3, AirPods Pro, or AirPods Max, or to Atmos-compatible speakers or receivers. If you are using other headphones and want the Music app to attempt Atmos playback, choose Always On.

What supported AirPods and Beats add
Supported headphones unlock Apple’s Spatial Audio options and, on compatible combinations of device, headphones, and content, head tracking. Apple documents three choices in Control Center: Off, Fixed (spatial audio without head tracking), and Head Tracked. To access them, connect supported AirPods, play supported content, open Control Center, touch and hold the volume control, then choose Spatial Audio. See Apple’s Spatial Audio controls guide.
Some Beats are also supported for Apple features; they are not all interchangeable with AirPods, and support varies by model. Apple’s documentation for Personalized Spatial Audio names supported Beats as well as AirPods. Its Beats controls guide includes Beats Studio Pro. Check Apple’s current compatibility information for the exact model and feature you want.

Personalized Spatial Audio requirements
Creating a Personalized Spatial Audio profile requires an iPhone with iOS 16 or later and a TrueDepth camera. Apple’s current support list includes AirPods Pro 1, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, AirPods Max, AirPods 3 or later, Beats Fit Pro, Beats Studio Pro, Beats Solo 4, Powerbeats Pro 2, and Powerbeats Fit. The feature also requires supported Apple devices and software versions, so confirm the current list on Apple’s setup page before choosing headphones. Apple says camera data used to develop the profile is processed entirely on the device and images are not stored.
Should you buy Apple headphones just for Atmos?
No. If your aim is to hear Apple Music’s Dolby Atmos mixes, start with the headphones you already own and set Dolby Atmos to Always On. Consider supported AirPods or Beats only if you also want Apple’s documented Spatial Audio controls, head tracking, or Personalized Spatial Audio. The fact that Atmos can play on any headphones does not establish that every third-party model supports Apple’s head-tracking or personalization features.
