A towing hitch, an engine oil cooler, and a transmission cooler are different things: the hitch couples the trailer to the vehicle, an engine oil cooler manages engine-oil temperature, and a transmission cooler manages automatic-transmission-fluid temperature. Towing can add thermal stress, but there is no universal “best” cooler—and adding one does not increase a vehicle’s, hitch’s, or ball’s towing rating. Check the tow vehicle’s manual or ask its dealer to confirm whether a cooler is needed and which one fits your exact vehicle.
Why the title’s three products are not interchangeable
A hitch is rated coupling hardware. A cooler is a heat-management component. Engine oil and automatic transmission fluid (ATF) are separate fluids, so a cooler intended for one system is not automatically suitable for the other.

The distinction matters when shopping: a Ford parts listing, for example, identifies its towing-related part for a 5.0L application as an automatic transmission oil cooler—not an engine oil cooler. That listing supports checking the fluid and vehicle application, not assuming the part fits other vehicles: Ford parts listing for FL3Z7A095B.

Does towing mean you need an auxiliary cooler?
Not necessarily. Trailer weight, steep climbs, sustained heavy loads, high ambient temperatures, and the vehicle’s existing cooling system all affect thermal demands. Whether an additional cooler is appropriate depends on the specific tow vehicle and how it is used; the available evidence does not establish a universal need or a general performance gain.

A Big Tex Trailers manual says, “Depending on the size of the trailer, you may need to install a separate engine oil cooler.” It also advises asking the tow-vehicle dealer whether separate engine-oil or transmission-oil cooling is necessary. Treat that as vehicle-specific guidance, not a blanket instruction for every tow vehicle: Big Tex Trailers owner’s manual.
How to choose a cooler for your actual application
Do not choose by a “best towing cooler” label alone. Confirm the fluid circuit and exact fitment first, then assess whether the cooler suits the vehicle’s space, airflow, and operating conditions. Cooler manufacturers describe tube-and-fin, plate-and-fin, and stacked-plate designs for engine-oil and transmission cooling; no one design is established here as best for every vehicle or duty cycle. - Fluid and system: Determine whether the need is for engine oil or ATF. Do not substitute one application for the other.
- Vehicle fitment: Match the cooler, adapters, and fittings to the exact year, make, model, engine, and transmission. Verify that the part is intended for the relevant vehicle.
- Duty and conditions: Consider trailer load, towing duration, terrain, and ambient conditions, then confirm the vehicle maker’s guidance.
- Mounting and airflow: Check available space, mounting requirements, and airflow at the intended location. A cooler must suit the vehicle’s layout as well as its thermal needs.
- Installation provisions: Confirm whether the kit requires a thermostat or adapter, and whether hoses, fittings, and mounting hardware are included or must be sourced separately.
- Availability and support: Check current availability, warranty, and application support before purchase. A historical catalog listing does not establish that a part remains available.

A 2013 TCI Automotive catalog documents an engine-oil cooler kit, part 820300, for specified Chevrolet 301–454 applications using a spin-on filter. The catalog claims a 20° to 30° F oil-temperature decrease for that product. This is a manufacturer claim, not an independent test, and it does not establish expected results for other vehicles or prove current availability: TCI Automotive 2013 catalog.

That example shows why fitment must be checked precisely; it is not a recommendation for other applications. The sources do not provide a tested ranking of coolers or independently established general towing performance figures, so a universal “best” pick cannot be supported.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A cooler does not raise towing capacity
Cooling equipment does not upgrade the ratings of the tow vehicle, hitch, or ball. The Big Tex Trailers manual states: “THE TOW VEHICLE, HITCH AND BALL MUST HAVE A RATED TOWING CAPACITY EQUAL TO OR GREATER THAN THE TRAILER GROSS VEHICLE WEIGHT RATING (GVWR).” Check the ratings and the vehicle’s towing guidance independently of any cooler decision.

Before you buy
- Check the tow vehicle’s owner’s manual for its towing and cooling guidance.
- Ask the tow-vehicle dealer whether extra engine-oil cooling, transmission-fluid cooling, or neither is appropriate for the trailer and use.
- Identify the fluid circuit and verify the exact vehicle, engine, and transmission fitment for the cooler and its installation components.
- Confirm the vehicle, hitch, and ball ratings meet or exceed the trailer’s GVWR; do not treat a cooler as a capacity upgrade.
