One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchYou can exit the AI toothbrush era now: no evidence here establishes that AI features are necessary for effective brushing or that AI toothbrushes outperform non-AI models. If a timer, pressure alert, or coverage prompt helps you brush more consistently, those features may be useful—but they are optional, and the added software may bring extra cost, data collection, charging, and app dependence.
What makes a toothbrush “AI”?
A powered brush is not automatically an AI toothbrush. A timer or pressure sensor can offer straightforward feedback without mapping your brushing. AI-enabled products add sensing and software intended to interpret brushing or oral-care information and respond with coaching or other actions. Connected features may also depend on an app or network service.

That distinction matters: evidence or useful features associated with powered brushing do not, by themselves, show that AI improves dental outcomes. The relevant question is whether a particular feature changes your habits enough to be worth its trade-offs.

What the 2026 products actually claim
Philips Sonicare 9900 Prestige
Philips announced its next-generation DiamondClean 9900 Prestige on July 7, 2026. The company describes on-device AI that provides real-time coverage guidance through a 12-segment Sonicare Mouth Map and a light ring. It says the brush can adjust intensity when it detects excessive pressure, and lists eight modes and three intensities. These are product descriptions and manufacturer claims, not independent proof of better oral-health outcomes. Philips forecast availability at selected retailers in Europe and the U.S. beginning in fall 2026, with other countries later in 2026 and into 2027; check current local availability.

Dyson CameraJet
Dyson announced CameraJet on September 1, 2026. The company says its camera and machine-learning system identifies gaps between teeth and triggers a targeted mouthrinse jet. Dyson lists a 100,000-pixel camera capturing 28 live images per second, and says the system was developed with 16 million lines of code and trained on 470,000 dental images. Those are company-reported specifications and development figures, not independent validation of dental results. Dyson’s U.S. product page showed CameraJet as out of stock when accessed on October 7, 2026.
Dyson also cites an average brushing time of 45 seconds and says nine in ten people do not floss as regularly as they should. These are figures Dyson attributes to its own source notes; they should not be treated as independently established estimates. Dyson’s announcement demonstrates a distinct product approach, not proof that the mouthrinse jet improves outcomes.

AI toothbrushes predate this product wave
In January 2018, Colgate-Palmolive announced the Smart Electronic Toothbrush E1, describing Bluetooth, an app, and AI detection across 16 mouth zones. The company then gave a U.S. recommended retail price of $99.95. That historical announcement shows the concept is not new; it does not establish current availability.

The evidence cited here does not establish that AI toothbrushes as a class outperform non-AI toothbrushes. Dr. Stephen Meraw, identified by Ars Technica as president of the American Academy of Periodontology, said: “There isn’t enough research to conclusively say that AI toothbrushes do a better job than non-AI toothbrushes, but maintaining a healthy at-home oral hygiene regimen is essential to periodontal health.”

Ars Technica also quoted Dr. Ruchi Sahota, an ADA consumer advisor spokesperson: “When it comes to manual versus powered brushes, some of which may include artificial intelligence features, what truly matters and will make a difference in your oral and overall health is that you’re effectively brushing twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste.” This is general guidance, not a substitute for advice tailored to your dental needs.
Manufacturer metrics can show what a company says its system measures, but they are not comparative clinical evidence. For example, Oral-B reports a global in-market evaluation covering more than 16 million brushing sessions and 94.4% average coverage with position detection. That is a manufacturer-reported evaluation, not an independently reviewed comparison proving that AI brushes beat non-AI alternatives.

Choose the level of feedback you will actually use
- Manual brush: A reasonable choice if you are comfortable with your routine and do not want powered or connected features. The evidence here does not establish that everyone needs an AI device.
- Conventional powered brush: Consider one if powered brushing suits you or you want a timer or pressure feedback without relying on AI coaching. These features address practical brushing habits; they do not demonstrate AI-specific superiority.
- Connected or AI-enabled brush: Consider one if coverage prompts or other coaching are likely to change how you brush, and you are comfortable with the added app, charging, data, and support dependencies. Higher-tier Oral-B iO models, for example, add app-connected tracking and coverage guidance; Oral-B describes pressure sensing and a two-minute timer on iO models.
There is no price or replacement-head comparison established here, so compare the current device and refill costs for the exact model you are considering. Do not assume a feature justifies a premium unless you expect to use it.
Check privacy and long-term dependence before buying
Toothbrush apps and sensors can collect brushing-related information, but collection and use vary by brand. Ars Technica’s July 2024 report discusses possible uses such as product recommendations and sharing under company policies, as well as uncertainty about how long connected features will be supported. It does not establish that every brand collects the same data or that every brush sends images to the cloud.
- Read the current privacy notice for the specific model and app. Check what brushing information is collected, how it may be used or shared, and whether app features are optional.
- Find out which functions work if you do not install the app, lose internet access, or the connected service is discontinued.
- Consider charging, replacement-head availability, repair options, and the likelihood that you will keep using the brush after coaching feels familiar.
When is it reasonable to opt out?
Opt out now if you do not want the extra complexity, or if a simpler brush already helps you maintain your routine. Choose powered or connected feedback only when the specific prompt addresses a real difficulty—such as brushing too briefly, pressing too hard, or missing areas—and the trade-offs are acceptable. The central standard is not whether a brush calls itself AI; it is whether you brush effectively and consistently.
